Price Stabilization in the Taiwan Hog and Broiler Industries: Evidence from a STAR Approach

    Get PDF
The paper examines the effectiveness of the price stabilization mechanism for the broiler and poultry industry in Taiwan during the period 1999 to 2008. After presenting some background information on the domestic marketing system and price stabilization mechanisms for the broiler and pork industry in Taiwan, the paper discusses the smooth transition autoregressive (STAR) methodology. Monthly hog and broiler price data from 1999 to 2008 at farm, import and retail levels are analyzed using the nonlinear, non-asymmetric logistic STAR model in order to determine price transmission structure. A price threshold parameter is used so that price transmission levels can vary, thereby allowing an examination of the efficacy with which the hog and broiler price stabilization mechanisms take effect.Broiler industry, Pork industry, Price stabilization, Domestic marketing system, Smooth transition autoregressive (STAR) methodology

The computation of Wavelet-Galerkin approximation on a bounded interval

    Get PDF
International audienceThis paper describes exact evaluations of various finite integrals whose integrands involve products of Daubechies' compactly supported wavelets and their derivatives and/or integrals. These finite integrals play an essential role in the wavelet-Galerkin approximation of differential or integral equations on a bounded interval

A technique for increasing the accuracy of the FFT-based method of numerical inversion of Laplace transforms

AbstractThe FFT-based methods of numerical inversion of Laplace transforms use the trapezoidal rule to the Bromwich integral. We present in this paper a technique for reducing the truncation error in evaluating the Bromwich integral. The technique employs the differentiation property of the Laplace transform and performs the inversion on F(n)(s), the nth order derivative of the Laplace transform of a time function f(t). The improvement in the solution accuracy by incorporating the presented technique into the FFT-based numerical Laplace inversion method is demonstrated via numerical examples

Model reduction of nonsquare linear MIMO systems using multipoint matrix continued-fraction expansions

This paper deals with the multipoint Cauer matrix continued-fraction expansion (MCFE) for model reduction of linear multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems with various numbers of inputs and outputs. A salient feature of the proposed MCFE approach to model reduction of MIMO systems with square transfer matrices is its equivalence to the matrix Pade approximation approach. The Cauer second form of the ordinary MCFE for a square transfer function matrix is generalized in this paper to a multipoint and nonsquare-matrix version. An interesting connection of the multipoint Cauer MCFE method to the multipoint matrix Pade approximation method is established. Also, algorithms for obtaining the reduced-degree matrix-fraction descriptions and reduced-dimensional state-space models from a transfer function matrix via the multipoint Cauer MCFE algorithm are presented. Practical advantages of using the multipoint Cauer MCFE are discussed and a numerical example is provided to illustrate the algorithms

Neutrino-photon scattering and its crossed processes in a background magnetic field

We study the neutrino-photon processes such as γγ→ννˉ\gamma\gamma\to \nu\bar{\nu} and νγ→νγ\nu\gamma\to \nu\gamma in a background magnetic field smaller than the critical magnetic field Bc≡me2/eB_c\equiv m_e^2/e. Using Schwinger's proper-time method, we extract leading magnetic-field contributions to the above processes. Our result is valid throughout the kinematic regime where both neutrino and photon energies are significantly smaller than mWm_W. We briefly discuss the astrophysical implications of our result.Comment: Revtex, 10 pages, 4 ps figures, to appear in Phys. Lett.

A Preliminary Study on the Synthesis and Characterization of Multilayered Ag/Co Magnetic Nanowires Fabricated via the Electrodeposition Method

A single-bath electrodeposition method was developed to integrate multilayer Ag/Co nanowires with a commercial anodic alumina oxide (AAO) template with a pore diameter of 100–200 nm. An electrolyte system containing silver nitride and cobalt sulfide was studied using cyclic voltammetry, and the electrodeposition rate was varied to optimize the electrodeposition conditions. A constant stepwise potential and a variable cation ratio of [Co2+]/[Ag+] were used during electrodeposition. After the dissolution of the template in aqueous NaOH solution, multilayered Ag/Co nanowires were obtained with a composition of [Co]/[Ag80Co20], as identified by XRD and TEM, when [Co2+]/[Ag+] = 150. By annealing at 200°C for 1 h, uniformly structured (Co99.57/Ag100) nanowires were obtained. Compared with pure Co nanowires, the magnetic hysteresis loops showed a greater magnetic anisotropy for (Co99.57/Ag100) nanowires than for pure Co nanowires, corresponding to a change in the easy axis upon magnetization
