Widespread dispersal and aging of organic carbon in shallow marginal seas
The occurrence of pre-aged organic carbon (OC) in continental margin surface sediments is a commonly observed phenomenon, yet the nature, sources, and causes of this aged OC remain largely undetermined for many continental shelf settings. Here we present the results of an extensive survey of the abundance and radiocarbon content of OC in surface sediments from the northern Chinese marginal seas. Pre-aged OC is associated with both coarser (>63 µm) and finer (<63 µm) sedimentary components; measurements on specific grain-size fractions reveal that it is especially prevalent within the 20–63 µm fraction of inner shelf sediments. We suggest that organic matter associated with this sortable silt fraction is subject to protracted entrainment in resuspension-deposition loops during which it ages, is modified, and is laterally dispersed, most likely via entrainment within benthic nepheloid layers. This finding highlights the complex dynamics and predepositional history of organic matter accumulating in continental shelf sediments, with implications for our understanding of carbon cycling on continental shelves, development of regional carbon budgets, and interpretation of sedimentary records
constraints for the hermitian one-matrix model
We construct the multi-variable realizations of the algebra
such that they lead to the -algebra. Based on our
realizations of the algebra, we derive the
constraints for the hermitian one-matrix model. The constraint operators yield
not only the algebra but also the closed
-algebra.Comment: 14 page
Regulation of LYRM1 Gene Expression by Free Fatty Acids, Adipokines, and Rosiglitazone in 3T3-L1 Adipocytes
LYR motif containing 1 (LYRM1) is a novel gene that is abundantly expressed in the adipose tissue of obese subjects and is involved in insulin resistance. In this study, free fatty acids (FFAs) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) are shown to upregulate LYRM1 mRNA expression in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Conversely, resistin and rosiglitazone exert an inhibitory effect on LYRM1 mRNA expression. These results suggest that the expression of LYRM1 mRNA is affected by a variety of factors that are related to insulin sensitivity. LYRM1 may be an important mediator in the development of obesity-related insulin resistance

Automatic Determination of Stellar Atmospheric Parameters and Construction of Stellar Spectral Templates of the Guoshoujing Telescope (LAMOST)
A number of spectroscopic surveys have been carried out or are planned to
study the origin of the Milky Way. Their exploitation requires reliable
automated methods and softwares to measure the fundamental parameters of the
stars. Adopting the ULySS package, we have tested the effect of different
resolutions and signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) on the measurement of the stellar
atmospheric parameters (effective temperature Teff, surface gravity log g, and
metallicity [Fe/H]). We show that ULySS is reliable to determine these
parameters with medium-resolution spectra (R~2000). Then, we applied the method
to measure the parameters of 771 stars selected in the commissioning database
of the Guoshoujing Telescope (GSJT). The results were compared with the
SDSS/SEGUE Stellar Parameter Pipeline (SSPP), and we derived precisions of 167
K, 0.34 dex, and 0.16 dex for Teff, log g and [Fe/H] respectively. Furthermore,
120 of these stars are selected to construct the primary stellar spectra
template library (Version 1.0) of GSJT, and will be deployed as basic
ingredients for the GSJT automated parametrization pipeline.Comment: 23 pages, 15 figures, accepted by RA
Nrg4 promotes fuel oxidation and a healthy adipokine profile to ameliorate diet-induced metabolic disorders
OBJECTIVE: Brown and white adipose tissue exerts pleiotropic effects on systemic energy metabolism in part by releasing endocrine factors. Neuregulin 4 (Nrg4) was recently identified as a brown fat-enriched secreted factor that ameliorates diet-induced metabolic disorders, including insulin resistance and hepatic steatosis. However, the physiological mechanisms through which Nrg4 regulates energy balance and glucose and lipid metabolism remain incompletely understood. The aims of the current study were: i) to investigate the regulation of adipose Nrg4 expression during obesity and the physiological signals involved, ii) to elucidate the mechanisms underlying Nrg4 regulation of energy balance and glucose and lipid metabolism, and iii) to explore whether Nrg4 regulates adipose tissue secretome gene expression and adipokine secretion.
METHODS: We examined the correlation of adipose Nrg4 expression with obesity in a cohort of diet-induced obese mice and investigated the upstream signals that regulate Nrg4 expression. We performed metabolic cage and hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp studies in Nrg4 transgenic mice to dissect the metabolic pathways regulated by Nrg4. We investigated how Nrg4 regulates hepatic lipid metabolism in the fasting state and explored the effects of Nrg4 on adipose tissue gene expression, particularly those encoding secreted factors.
RESULTS: Adipose Nrg4 expression is inversely correlated with adiposity and regulated by pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory signaling. Transgenic expression of Nrg4 increases energy expenditure and augments whole body glucose metabolism. Nrg4 protects mice from diet-induced hepatic steatosis in part through activation of hepatic fatty acid oxidation and ketogenesis. Finally, Nrg4 promotes a healthy adipokine profile during obesity.
CONCLUSIONS: Nrg4 exerts pleiotropic beneficial effects on energy balance and glucose and lipid metabolism to ameliorate obesity-associated metabolic disorders. Biologic therapeutics based on Nrg4 may improve both type 2 diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in patients
