    Quantitative agreement of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions for domain-wall motion and spin-wave propagation

    The magnetic exchange interaction is the one of the key factors governing the basic characteristics of magnetic systems. Unlike the symmetric nature of the Heisenberg exchange interaction, the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) generates an antisymmetric exchange interaction which offers challenging opportunities in spintronics with intriguing antisymmetric phenomena. The role of the DMI, however, is still being debated, largely because distinct strengths of DMI have been measured for different magnetic objects, particularly chiral magnetic domain walls (DWs) and non-reciprocal spin waves (SWs). In this paper, we show that, after careful data analysis, both the DWs and SWs experience the same strength of DMI. This was confirmed by spin-torque efficiency measurement for the DWs, and Brillouin light scattering measurement for the SWs. This observation, therefore, indicates the unique role of the DMI on the magnetic DW and SW dynamics and also guarantees the compatibility of several DMI-measurement schemes recently proposed.Comment: 24 pages, 5 figure

    Cordycepin induces apoptosis of human ovarian cancer cells by inhibiting CCL5-mediated Akt/NF-κB signaling pathway

    The chemokine, CCL5, is a key mediator for the recruitment of immune cells into tumors and tissues. Akt/NF-κB signaling is significantly activated by CCL5. However, the role of NF-κB inactivation in apoptosis induced by negative regulation of CCL5 remains unclear. Here, we analyzed the effect of cordycepin on NF-κB activity in SKOV-3 cells and found that cordycepin-mediated inhibition of NF-κB signaling induced apoptosis in SKOV-3 cells via the serial activation of caspases. In addition, immune-blotting analysis showed that CCL5 is highly expressed in SKOV-3 cells. In addition to activating caspases, we show that, cordycepin prevents TNF-α-induced increase in CCL5, Akt, NF-κB, and c-FLIPL activation and that CCL5 siRNA could inhibit Akt/NF-κB signaling. Moreover, cordycepin negatively regulated the TNF-α-mediated IκB/NF-κB pathway and c-FLIPL activation to promote JNK phosphorylation, resulting in caspase-3 activation and apoptosis. Also, we show that c-FLIPL is rapidly lost in NF-κB activation-deficient. siRNA mediated c-FLIP inhibition increased JNK. SP600125, a selective JNK inhibitor, downregulated p-JNK expression in cordycepin-treated SKOV-3 cells, leading to suppression of cordycepin-induced apoptosis. Thus, these results indicate that cordycepin inhibits CCL5-mediated Akt/NF-κB signaling, which upregulates caspase-3 activation in SKOV-3 cells, supporting the potential of cordycepin as a therapeutic agent for ovarian cancer

    Stereotactic body radiotherapy for hepatocellular carcinoma: meta-analysis and International Stereotactic Radiosurgery Society practice guidelines

    PURPOSE This systematic review and meta-analysis reports on outcomes and hepatic toxicity rates following stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) for liver confined hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and presents consensus guidelines regarding appropriate patient management. METHODS AND MATERIALS Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systemic Review and Meta-analyses guidelines, a systematic review was performed from articles reporting outcomes at ≥5 years published prior to October 2022 from the Embase, MEDLINE, Cochrane, and Scopus databases using the key words terms ("Stereotactic body radiotherapy" OR "SBRT" OR "SABR" OR "Stereotactic ablative radiotherapy") AND ("Hepatocellular carcinoma" OR "HCC"). An aggregated data (AD) meta-analysis was conducted to assess overall survival (OS) and local control (LC) using weighted random effects models. In addition, an individual patient data (IPD) analysis incorporating data from 6 institutions was conducted as its own subgroup analyses. RESULTS Seventeen observational studies, comprising 1889 HCC patients treated with ≤9 SBRT fractions, between 2003 and 2019, were included in the AD meta-analysis. The 3- and 5- year OS rates after SBRT were 57% (95% confidence interval [CI], 47-66%) and 40% (95% CI, 29-51%). The 3- and 5- year LC rates after SBRT were 84% (95% CI, 77-90%) and 82% (95% CI, 74-88%), respectively. Tumor size was the only prognostic factor for LC. Tumor size and region were significantly associated with OS. Five-year LC and OS rates of 79% (95% CI, 0.74-0.84) and 25% (95% CI, 0.20-0.30), respectively, were observed in the IPD analyses. Factors prognostic for improved OS were tumor size <3 cm, eastern region, Child-Pugh score ≤B7, and the Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer stage of 0 and A. The incidence of severe hepatic toxicity varied according to the criteria applied. CONCLUSIONS SBRT is an effective treatment modality for HCC patients with mature follow up.     The Relation of Thyroid Function to Components of the Metabolic Syndrome in Korean Men and Women

    This study was to assess the relation of thyroid dysfunction to metabolic syndrome (MetS) at an earlier stage in Korean population. Metabolic parameters such as body composition, blood pressure (BP), fasting glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride (TG), HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C), LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and free thyroxine 4 (fT4) were measured. During a mean follow-up of 3 yr, 5,998 Koreans ages over 18 yr were assessed. There were 694 cases of MetS at follow-up. The mean age of the subjects was 45.6 ± 9.5 yr. Mean level of TSH was 2.02 ± 1.50 mIU/L, mean level of fT4 was 1.23 ± 0.20 ρM/L. At baseline, TSH levels and fT4 levels were associated to waist circumference, BP, glucose and lipids in the subjects. Increase in systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure (DBP), total cholesterol and TG were significantly associated with changes in TSH levels after adjustment. Changes in DBP, TG, HDL-C and fasting glucose were significantly associated with changes in fT4 levels after adjustment. Increase in TSH levels even after further controlling for baseline TSH level predicted the MetS over the study period. In conclusion, there is a relationship between thyroid function and cardiovascular risk factors, such as BP, total cholesterol, TG, HDL-C and fasting glucose.     Analysis of Serum Levels of Anti-Müllerian Hormone, Inhibin B, Insulin-Like Growth Factor-I, Insulin-Like Growth Factor Binding Protein-3, and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone with Respect to Age and Menopausal Status

    This study was undertaken to investigate age-dependent and postmenopausal changes in the serum levels of anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), inhibin B, insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I, IGF-binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3), and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and to determine which of these markers best reflects the aging process in women. A total of 144 women aged 20-59 yr were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Blood samples were obtained on cycle day 3 of regularly menstruating women (n=111), or at random in postmenopausal women (n=33). Data were analyzed with respect to premenopausal women age groups and compared in pre- and postmenopausal women. Area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROCAUC) analyses were performed to assess the ability of each marker to discriminate between the pre- and postmenopausal status. Serum levels of AMH, IGF-I, and IGFBP-3 decreased and serum levels of FSH increased significantly with age in premenopausal women. Serum luteinizing hormone (LH) was higher and inhibin B was lower in women in their 20-30's than in 40's. Serum levels of AMH and IGF-I showed a consistent decrease with all age groups. ROCAUC analysis showed that the diagnostic accuracy of AMH for menopausal status was similar to those of FSH, LH, and inhibin B, and was better than that of IGF-I. In conclusion, the serum AMH level appears to be the best marker of the aging process in premenopausal women

    JaxPruner: A concise library for sparsity research

    This paper introduces JaxPruner, an open-source JAX-based pruning and sparse training library for machine learning research. JaxPruner aims to accelerate research on sparse neural networks by providing concise implementations of popular pruning and sparse training algorithms with minimal memory and latency overhead. Algorithms implemented in JaxPruner use a common API and work seamlessly with the popular optimization library Optax, which, in turn, enables easy integration with existing JAX based libraries. We demonstrate this ease of integration by providing examples in four different codebases: Scenic, t5x, Dopamine and FedJAX and provide baseline experiments on popular benchmarks.Comment: Jaxpruner is hosted at http://github.com/google-research/jaxprune

    Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Endoscopic Management of Peripancreatic Fluid Collections

    Endoscopic ultrasonography-guided intervention has gradually become a standard treatment for peripancreatic fluid collections (PFCs). However, it is difficult to popularize the procedure in Korea because of restrictions on insurance claims regarding the use of endoscopic accessories, as well as the lack of standardized Korean clinical practice guidelines. The Korean Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (KSGE) appointed a Task Force to develope medical guidelines by referring to the manual for clinical practice guidelines development prepared by the National Evidence-Based Healthcare Collaborating Agency. Previous studies on PFCs were searched, and certain studies were selected with the help of experts. Then, a set of key questions was selected, and treatment guidelines were systematically reviewed. Answers to these questions and recommendations were selected via peer review. This guideline discusses endoscopic management of PFCs and makes recommendations on Indications for the procedure, pre-procedural preparations, optimal approach for drainage, procedural considerations (e.g., types of stent, advantages and disadvantages of plastic and metal stents, and accessories), adverse events of endoscopic intervention, and procedural quality issues. This guideline was reviewed by external experts and suggests best practices recommended based on the evidence available at the time of preparation. This will be revised as necessary to address advances and changes in technology and evidence obtained in clinical practice and future studies

    Genetic variations in HMGCR and PCSK9 and kidney function: a Mendelian randomization study

    Background The genetically predicted lipid-lowering effect of HMGCR or PCSK9 variant can be used to assess drug proxy effects on kidney function. Methods Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis-identified HMGCR and PCSK9 genetic variants were used to predict the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol-lowering effects of medications targeting related molecules. Primary summary-level outcome data for log-estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR; creatinine) were provided by the CKDGen Consortium (n = 1,004,040 European) from a meta-analysis of CKDGen and UK Biobank data. We also conducted a separate investigation of summary-level data from CKDGen (n = 567,460, log-eGFR [creatinine]) and UK Biobank (n = 436,581, log-eGFR [cystatin C]) samples. Summary-level MRs using an inverse variance weighted method and pleiotropy-robust methods were performed. Results Summary-level MR analysis indicated that the LDL-lowering effect predicted genetically by HMGCR variants (50-mg/dL decrease) was significantly associated with a decrease in eGFR (–1.67%; 95% confidence interval [CI], –2.20% to –1.13%). Similar significance was found in results from the pleiotropy-robust MR methods when the CKDGen and UK Biobank data were analyzed separately. However, the LDL-lowering effect predicted genetically by PCSK9 variants was significantly associated with an increase in eGFR (+1.17%; 95% CI, 0.10%–2.25%). The results were similarly supported by the weighted median method and in each CKDGen and UK Biobank dataset, but the significance obtained by MR-Egger regression was attenuated. Conclusion Genetically predicted HMG-CoA reductase inhibition was associated with low eGFR, while genetically predicted PCSK9 inhibition was associated with high eGFR.
