    Pancreatic Resections for Advanced M1-Pancreatic Carcinoma: The Value of Synchronous Metastasectomy

    Background. For M1 pancreatic adenocarcinomas pancreatic resection is usually not indicated. However, in highly selected patients synchronous metastasectomy may be appropriate together with pancreatic resection when operative morbidity is low. Materials and Methods. From January 1, 2004 to December, 2007 a total of 20 patients with pancreatic malignancies were retrospectively evaluated who underwent pancreatic surgery with synchronous resection of hepatic, adjacent organ, or peritoneal metastases for proven UICC stage IV periampullary cancer of the pancreas. Perioperative as well as clinicopathological parameters were evaluated. Results. There were 20 patients (9 men, 11 women; mean age 58 years) identified. The primary tumor was located in the pancreatic head (n = 9, 45%), in pancreatic tail (n = 9, 45%), and in the papilla Vateri (n = 2, 10%). Metastases were located in the liver (n = 14, 70%), peritoneum (n = 5, 25%), and omentum majus (n = 2, 10%). Lymphnode metastases were present in 16 patients (80%). All patients received resection of their tumors together with metastasectomy. Pylorus preserving duodenopancreatectomy was performed in 8 patients, distal pancreatectomy in 8, duodenopancreatectomy in 2, and total pancreatectomy in 2. Morbidity was 45% and there was no perioperative mortality. Median postoperative survival was 10.7 months (2.6–37.7 months) which was not significantly different from a matched-pair group of patients who underwent pancreatic resection for UICC adenocarcinoma of the pancreas (median survival 15.6 months; P = .1). Conclusion. Pancreatic resection for M1 periampullary cancer of the pancreas can be performed safely in well-selected patients. However, indication for surgery has to be made on an individual basis

    Nanogranular MgB2 thin films on SiC buffered Si substrates prepared by in-situ method

    MgB2 thin films were deposited on SiC buffered Si substrates by sequential electron beam evaporation of B-Mg bilayer followed by in-situ annealing. The application of a SiC buffer layer enables the maximum annealing temperature of 830 C. The Transmission Electron Microscopy analysis confirms the growth of a nanogranular MgB2 film and the presence of a Mg2Si compound at the surface of the film. The 150-200 nm thick films show a maximum zero resistance critical temperature TC0 above 37 K and a critical current density JC ~ 106 A/cm2 at 11K.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Applied Physics Letter

    Wear resistant solid lubricating coatings via compression molding and thermal spraying technologies

    This work combines two industrially friendly processing methods in order to create wear resistant and solid-lubricating composite coatings potentially suitable for high load applications. Layered composite coatings were fabricated over wrought stainless steel 444 (SS444) by compression molding a mixture of solid lubricant polymer, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE, 80 wt%), and wear resistant polymer, polyimide (PI, 20 wt%), onto iron aluminide (Fe3Al) thermal spray coatings without the need of either primers or adhesives. The fabrication process consisted of three main steps: deposition of the Fe3Al thermal spray coating onto a SS444 substrate and transfer into a metal mold; transfer, compress, and sinter mixed polymeric powder onto the thermal spray coating; and finally, sample cooling to room temperature. This method takes advantage of the high surface roughness of thermal spray coatings, which increases mechanical adhesion of slippery PTFE to the underlying metallic material. Coatings were produced with and without a small amount of graphite (5 wt%) to analyze its impact on sliding and wear properties. Unlike current coating technologies, the thickness of the coatings presented herein can be easily and quickly tailored by varying the amount of polymer powder added to the mold prior to compression or by grinding after fabrication. We produced and analyzed coatings ~1.3 mm in total thickness that portray coefficient of frictions ~0.1, similar to pure PTFE. The calculated wear rates for both coatings with and without graphite are an order of magnitude lower than what has been previously reported for coatings of similar composition. The influence of graphite on wear properties was found to be minimal due to the high content of self-lubricating PTFE yet can act as a way to lower material costs and increase the coatings load capacity

    Studies of resistance switching effects in metal/YBa2Cu3O7-x interface junctions

    Current-voltage characteristics of planar junctions formed by an epitaxial c-axis oriented YBa2Cu3O7-x thin film micro-bridge and Ag counter-electrode were measured in the temperature range from 4.2 K to 300 K. A hysteretic behavior related to switching of the junction resistance from a high-resistive to a low-resistive state and vice-versa was observed and analyzed in terms of the maximal current bias and temperature dependence. The same effects were observed on a sub-micrometer scale YBa2Cu3O7-x thin film - PtIr point contact junctions using Scanning Tunneling Microscope. These phenomena are discussed within a diffusion model, describing an oxygen vacancy drift in YBa2Cu3O7-x films in the nano-scale vicinity of the junction interface under applied electrical fields.Comment: To be published in Applied Surface Science

    Spin-dependent effective interactions for halo nuclei

    We discuss the spin-dependence of the effective two-body interactions appropriate for three-body computations. The only reasonable choice seems to be the fine and hyperfine interactions known for atomic electrons interacting with the nucleus. One exception is the nucleon-nucleon interaction imposing a different type of symmetry. We use the two-neutron halo nucleus 11Li as illustration. We demonstrate that models with the wrong spin-dependence are basically without predictive power.     Effect of crystallographic anisotropy on the resistance switching phenomenon in perovskites

    Resistance switching effects in metal/perovskite contacts based on epitaxial c-axis oriented Y-Ba-Cu-O (YBCO) thin films with different crystallographic orientations have been studied. Three types of Ag/YBCO junctions with the contact restricted to (i) c-axis direction, (ii) ab-plane direction, and (iii) both were designed and fabricated, and their current-voltage characteristics have been measured. The type (i) junctions exhibited conventional bipolar resistance switching behavior, whereas in other two types the low-resistance state was unsteady and their resistance quickly relaxed to the initial high-resistance state.     Comparative analysis of cell death induction by Taurolidine in different malignant human cancer cell lines

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Taurolidine (TRD) represents an anti-infective substance with anti-neoplastic activity in many malignant cell lines. So far, the knowledge about the cell death inducing mechanisms and pathways activated by TRD is limited. The aim of this study was therefore, to perform a comparative analysis of cell death induction by TRD simultaneously in different malignant cell lines.</p> <p>Materials and methods</p> <p>Five different malignant cell lines (HT29/Colon, Chang Liver/Liver, HT1080/fibrosarcoma, AsPC-1/pancreas and BxPC-3/pancreas) were incubated with increasing concentrations of TRD (100 μM, 250 μM and 1000 μM) for 6 h and 24 h. Cell viability, apoptosis and necrosis were analyzed by FACS analysis (Propidiumiodide/AnnexinV staining). Additionally, cells were co-incubated with the caspase Inhibitor z-VAD, the radical scavenger N-Acetylcystein (NAC) and the Gluthation depleting agent BSO to examine the contribution of caspase activation and reactive oxygen species in TRD induced cell death.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>All cell lines were susceptible to TRD induced cell death without resistance toward this anti-neoplastic agent. However, the dose response effects were varying largely between different cell lines. The effect of NAC and BSO co-treatment were highly different among cell lines - suggesting a cell line specific involvement of ROS in TRD induced cell death. Furthermore, impact of z-VAD mediated inhibition of caspases was differing strongly among the cell lines.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This is the first study providing a simultaneous evaluation of the anti-neoplastic action of TRD across several malignant cell lines. The involvement of ROS and caspase activation was highly variable among the five cell lines, although all were susceptible to TRD induced cell death. Our results indicate, that TRD is likely to provide multifaceted cell death mechanisms leading to a cell line specific diversity.</p

    A conceptual design study for a two-dimensional, electronically scanned thinned array radiometer

    A conceptual design for the Two-Dimensional, Electronically Steered Thinned Array Radiometer (ESTAR) is described. This instrument is a synthetic aperture microwave radiometer that operates in the L-band frequency range for the measurement of soil moisture and ocean salinity. Two auxiliary instruments, an 8-12 micron, scanning infrared radiometer and a 0.4-1.0 micron, charge coupled device (CCD) video camera, are included to provided data for sea surface temperature measurements and spatial registration of targets respectively. The science requirements were defined by Goddard Space Flight Center. Instrument and the spacecraft configurations are described for missions using the Pegasus and Taurus launch vehicles. The analyses and design trades described include: estimations of size, mass and power, instrument viewing coverage, mechanical design trades, structural and thermal analyses, data and communications performance assessments, and cost estimation
