Interaction of two tributary glacier branches and implications for surge behavior

Thesis (M.S.) University of Alaska Fairbanks, 2018A glacier surge is a dynamic phenomenon where the glacier after a long period of quiescence, increases its velocities by up to two orders of magnitude. These surges tend to have complex interactions with tributaries, yet the role of these tributary interactions towards glacier surging has yet to be fully investigated. In this work we construct a synthetic glacier with an adjustable tributary intersection angle to study tributary interaction with the trunk glacier. The geometry we choose is loosely based on the main trunk and tributary interaction of Black Rapids Glacier, AK, USA, which last surged in 1936-1937. We investigate surface elevations, medial moraine locations, and erosive power at the bed of the glacier in response to our adjustable domain and relative flux. A nonlinear relationship between tributary flux and surface elevations is found that indicates flow restrictions can occur with geometries like Black Rapids Glacier. These flow restrictions cause increased ice thicknesses up-glacier which can lead to surges via increased stresses

Fighting Terrorism in an Electronic Age: Does the Patriot Act Unduly Compromise Our Civil Liberties?

    Get PDF
The USA PATRIOT Act is tremendously controversial, both lauded by law enforcement and decried by civil liberties groups. This iBrief considers two of the Act\u27s communications monitoring provisions, concluding that each compromises civil liberties to a greater degree than is necessary to combat terrorism. Accordingly, Congress should revise the USA PATRIOT Act, bringing it into line with the Constitution

A formula for the coincidence Reidemeister trace of selfmaps on bouquets of circles

We give a formula for the coincidence Reidemeister trace of selfmaps on bouquets of circles in terms of the Fox calculus. Our formula reduces the problem of computing the coincidence Reidemeister trace to the problem of distinguishing doubly twisted conjugacy classes in free groups.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figure

Gamale Kham phonology revisited, with Devanagari-based orthography and lexicon

    Get PDF
The purpose of this article is twofold. Firstly, it is a revision of certain aspects of the phonological analysis of Gamāle Khām by Wilde (2011), a lesser known Central Himalayish language spoken in midwestern Nepal. Secondly it attempts to reduce Gamāle Khām phonology to writing. The preliminary orthography suggested in this article uses the Devanāgarī script, and is supported by an interlinearised text, and a lexicon comprising approximately 1,400 headwords which have also been transcribed with IPA, and glossed in Nepali and English

    Cunningham v. California

In Cunningham v. California, the United States Supreme Court voted 6-3 to invalidate California\u27s determinate sentencing law ( DSL ) as violative of the Sixth and Fourteenth Amendments. The Court held that, notwithstanding the California Supreme Court\u27s determination to the contrary, the DSL conflicted with prior Supreme Court precedent by placing sentence-elevating factfinding within the judge\u27s province, thereby violat[ing] a defendant\u27s right to trial by jury safeguarded by the Sixth and Fourteenth Amendments

Revisiting the Afterlife: The Inadequacies of Heaven and Hell

This paper deals with some of the ambiguities that are associated with the intermediate and final states after death. Whereas many in the church have dismissed these concepts as myths of the ancients, this discussion shows how the grounding of such beliefs in the Hebrew mindset was the key to Jesusā€™ own teachings about the afterlife. The argument begins by developing a biblical anthropology over against the modern naturalistic anthropologies that have largely dominated the philosophical and theological scenes. From here we look at the Old Testament concept of the afterlife, and how the modern view that the Hebrews were ambivalent about such a concept is plainly false. Then it is argued that the New Testament doctrines of heaven and hell, which become very specific at this point, are thoroughly indebted to Jewish underpinnings. Without this foundation there would be no clear divisions within the realms of the dead, but because Jesus and his followers assume the validity of the Old Testament material they are able to flesh out such eschatological questions as where Jesus went after death, and where the saint and reprobate will go today. Far from being a stale theological issue, this study has direct bearing upon how one evangelizes today. For when the specific concepts are grasped, the believer will realize that the lost are not going to hell, at least not yet

What is Leadership? (Chapter Two of Leadership Alive: Changing Leadership Practices within the Emerging 21st Century Culture)

Excerpt: This newly emerging culture is upon us. This change in Western culture requires a new breed of leader to emerge. There are many usable definitions concerning leadership. Leadership may appear in many forms, come from many theories, and be derived from many sources, but all are likely to guide through actions, influence, or service. 80 The new emerging leader of the 21st century will understand the relationship between the four principle leadership models: (1) Servant Leadership, (2) Situational Leadership, (3) Leadership and the New Science, and ( 4) Christian Leadership. In Chapter Three, I will introduce and explore the cultural shift that is surfacing within the United States and for that matter, Western Society abroad. I\u27ll discuss its effect upon leadership perceptions and development and will introduce three major themes of cultural change. We\u27re in need of a leadership with perspective and that perspective is colored by the prismatic tapestry of our evolving culture. So let\u27s turn the page to explore and collect some new colors of understanding as we venture into the future of the 21st century
