Hyperfine Splitting and the Zeeman Effect in Holographic Heavy-Light Mesons
We inspect the mass spectrum of heavy-light mesons in deformed N=2 super
Yang-Mills theory using the AdS/CFT correspondence. We demonstrate how some of
the degeneracies of the supersymmetric meson spectrum can be removed upon
breaking the supersymmetry, thus leading to the emergence of hyperfine
structure. The explicit SUSY breaking scenarios we consider involve on one hand
tilting one of the two fundamental D7 branes inside the internal R^6 space, and
on the other hand applying an external magnetic field on the (untilted) branes.
The latter scenario leads to the well-known Zeeman effect, which we inspect for

Modelling of vorticity, sound and their interaction in two-dimensional superfluids
Vorticity in two-dimensional superfluids is subject to intense research
efforts due to its role in quantum turbulence, dissipation and the BKT phase
transition. Interaction of sound and vortices is of broad importance in
Bose-Einstein condensates and superfluid helium [1-4]. However, both the
modelling of the vortex flow field and of its interaction with sound are
complicated hydrodynamic problems, with analytic solutions only available in
special cases. In this work, we develop methods to compute both the vortex and
sound flow fields in an arbitrary two-dimensional domain. Further, we analyse
the dispersive interaction of vortices with sound modes in a two-dimensional
superfluid and develop a model that quantifies this interaction for any vortex
distribution on any two-dimensional bounded domain, possibly non-simply
connected, exploiting analogies with fluid dynamics of an ideal gas and
electrostatics. As an example application we use this technique to propose an
experiment that should be able to unambiguously detect single circulation
quanta in a helium thin film.Comment: 23 pages, 8 figure

The online air travel market is a complex and dynamic multi-channel environment in which consumers use a range of decision criteria to search for their best flight options. Online Travel Agents and Price Comparison Engines have transformed the search process and enhanced market transparency. These Air Travel Intermediaries (ATIs) are sophisticated decision support tools that enable online search and booking across thousands of flight options for all users, regardless of user expertise. An experiment was conducted to explore the detailed search behavior and processes of 29 individuals. The medial entorhinal cortex is necessary for temporal organization of hippocampal neuronal activity.
The superficial layers of the medial entorhinal cortex (MEC) are a major input to the hippocampus. The high proportion of spatially modulated cells, including grid cells and border cells, in these layers suggests that MEC inputs are critical for the representation of space in the hippocampus. However, selective manipulations of the MEC do not completely abolish hippocampal spatial firing. To determine whether other hippocampal firing characteristics depend more critically on MEC inputs, we recorded from hippocampal CA1 cells in rats with MEC lesions. Theta phase precession was substantially disrupted, even during periods of stable spatial firing. Our findings indicate that MEC inputs to the hippocampus are required for the temporal organization of hippocampal firing patterns and suggest that cognitive functions that depend on precise neuronal sequences in the hippocampal theta cycle are particularly dependent on the MEC
Stabilized Singlets in Supergravity as a Source of the mu-parameter
Within the context of supergravity-coupled supersymmetry, fields which are
gauge and global singlets are usually considered anathema. Their vacuum
expectation values are shifted by quadratically divergent tadpole diagrams
which are cutoff at the Planck scale, destabilizing the classical potential and
driving the singlet field to large values. We demonstrate a new and generic
mechanism which stabilizes the singlet in the presence of an extended gauge
symmetry. Such a symmetry will be broken down to the Standard Model by the
supergravity interactions near the scale of spontaneous supersymmetry-breaking
in the hidden-sector (about 10^{10-11} GeV). The resulting singlet expectation
value is stabilized and naturally of order the gravitino mass, providing
therefore a weak-scale mass for the Higgs fields of the supersymmetric Standard
Model (a "mu-parameter"). The resulting low-energy theory is the minimal
supersymmetric Standard Model, with all new fields decoupling at the

Differing Mechanisms Underlie Sexual Size-Dimorphism in Two Populations of a Sex-Changing Fish
Variability in the density of groups within a patchy environment lead to differences in interaction rates, growth dynamics and social organization. In protogynous hermaphrodites there are hypothesised trade-offs among sex-specific growth, reproductive output and mortality. When differences in density lead to changes to social organization the link between growth and the timing of sex-change is predicted to change. The present study explores this prediction by comparing the social organisation and sex-specific growth of two populations of a protogynous tropical wrasse, Halichoeres miniatus, which differ in density. At a low density population a strict harem structure was found, where males maintained a tight monopoly of access and spawning rights to females. In contrast, at a high density population a loosely organised system prevailed, where females could move throughout multiple male territories. Otolith microstructure revealed the species to be annual and deposit an otolith check associated with sex-change. Growth trajectories suggested that individuals that later became males in both populations underwent a growth acceleration at sex-change. Moreover, in the high density population, individuals that later became males were those individuals that had the largest otolith size at hatching and consistently deposited larger increments throughout early larval, juvenile and female life. This study demonstrates that previous growth history and growth rate changes associated with sex change can be responsible for the sexual dimorphism typically found in sex-changing species, and that the relative importance of these may be socially constrained
Radial Velocity Studies of Close Binary Stars.VIII
Radial-velocity measurements and sine-curve fits to the orbital velocity
variations are presented for the seventh set of ten close binary systems: V410
Aur, V523 Cas, QW Gem, V921 Her, V2357 Oph, V1130 Tau, HN UMa, HX UMa, HD
93917, NSV 223. All systems, but three (V523 Cas, HD 93917, NSV 223), were
discovered photometrically by the Hipparcos mission. All systems are
double-lined (SB2) binaries and all, but the detached, very close system V1130
Tau, are contact binaries. The broadening-function permitted improvement of the
orbital elements for V523 Cas, which was the only system observed before for
radial velocity variations. Spectroscopic/visual companions were detected for
