    A method for reconstructing the PDF of a 3D turbulent density field from 2D observations

    We introduce a method for calculating the probability density function (PDF) of a turbulent density field in three dimensions using only information contained in the projected two-dimensional column density field. We test the method by applying it to numerical simulations of hydrodynamic and magnetohydrodynamic turbulence in molecular clouds. To a good approximation, the PDF of log(normalised column density) is a compressed, shifted version of the PDF of log(normalised density). The degree of compression can be determined observationally from the column density power spectrum, under the assumption of statistical isotropy of the turbulence.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS Letter

    Soybean production and conversion of tropical forest in the Brazilian Amazon: The case of Vilhena, Rondônia

    The recent rise in Brazilian soybean production has generated concern among the environmental community and some authors that natural tropical environments of the Amazon Basin are being converted to soybean fields. Proponents of soybean production counter that soybeans represent a viable agricultural commodity for the region; environmental concern is unwarranted, because new soybean fields are replacing already deforested or otherwise transformed lands. Both arguments have been made without comprehensive study and measure of land-use/land-cover (LULC) in areas undergoing expansion of soybean production. This case study, conducted in the municipality of Vilhena, Rondônia, Brazil, in the southwestern Amazon Basin, uses remote sensing to evaluate the LULC accompanying this municipality's large growth in soybean production from 1996 to 2001. Forests are being converted for soybean production, but most of the production increase appears attributable to slight expansion of already existing fields, conversion of already deforested land, and higher yields

    Does repetitive task training improve functional activity after stroke? A Cochrane systematic review and meta-analysis.

    Repetitive task training resulted in modest improvement across a range of lower limb outcome measures, but not upper limb outcome measures. Training may be sufficient to have a small impact on activities of daily living. Interventions involving elements of repetition and task training are diverse and difficult to classify: the results presented are specific to trials where both elements are clearly present in the intervention, without major confounding by other potential mechanisms of action

    MULTIVARIATE STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF COLEOPTERA SPECTRAL REFLECTANCE

    The insect order Coleoptera, commonly known as beetles, comprises 40% of all insects which in turn account for half of all identified animal species alive today. Coleopterans frequently have large elytra (the hardened front wings) that can have a wide range of colors. Spectral reflectance readings from these elytra may be used to uniquely identify coleopteran taxonomic groups. Multiple samples of eleven species of wood boring beetles were selected from the University of Idaho William Barr Entomology Museum. Spectrometer readings for each specimen were then fit to normal distribution mixture models to identify multiple peak reflectance wavelengths. Eighteen prominent peaks were identified across all taxonomic groups and genders creating a multivariate response structure. Multivariate statistical procedures including principal component and discriminant analyses were employed to assess the differentiation of taxonomic groups and genders based on spectral reflectance. The first three axes of the principal component analysis accounted for 96% of the variation and provided a clear clustering of genus and gender for a subset of taxonomic groups. The linear discriminant analysis under an assumption of multivariate normality provided a distinct classification of taxonomic groups resulting in an overall 4% misclassification rate; while the nearest neighbor discriminant analysis with a proportional prior gave an overall error rate of 5.2%. Internal bootstrap validation of the latter discriminant model yielded an average error rate of 3.5%. An external cross validation of the same model, conducted on independent samples of the same species with new individuals resulted in an average misclassification error rate of only 6.5%. Given the low error rates of misclassification, such multivariate statistical approaches are recommended for analysis of spectral reflectance in Coleoptera and other similar insect groups

    Diet Composition: A Proximate Mechanism Explaining Stream Salamander Declines in Surface Waters with Elevated Specific Conductivity

    Changes in land use, such as mountaintop removal mining with valley fills (MTR-VF), often results in headwater streams with elevated specific conductivity (SC). Stream salamanders appear to be particularly sensitive to elevated SC, as previous studies have shown occupancy and abundance decline consistently among all species and life stages as SC increases. Yet, the proximate mechanism responsible for the population declines in streams with elevated SC have eluded researchers. We sampled salamander assemblages across a continuous SC gradient (30–1966 μS/cm) in southeastern Kentucky and examined the diet of larval and adult salamanders to determine if the ratio of aquatic to terrestrial prey (autochthony), total prey volume, aquatic prey importance (Ix), and body condition are influenced by SC. Further, we asked if threshold points for each diet component were present along a gradient of SC. Larval salamanders experienced a 12–fold decline in autochthony at 153 μS/cm, a 4.2–fold decline in total prey volume at 100 μS/cm, a 2.2-fold decline in aquatic Ix at 135 μS/cm, and a rapid decline in body condition as SC increased. Adult salamanders experienced a 3–fold decline in autochthony at 382 μS/cm, no change in prey volumes, a 2-fold decline in aquatic Ix at 163 μS/cm, and a decline in body condition as SC increased. Our results indicate that SC indirectly affects stream salamander populations by changing the composition of diet, which suggests that food availability is a proximate mechanism that leads to reduced population occupancy, abundance, and persistence in streams with elevated SC

    MODELING THE OCCURRENCE OF FOUR CEREAL CROP APHID SPECIES IN IDAHO

    Idaho is ranked 5th in the United States in overall wheat production and makes over $500 million in profit annually from wheat. Many pests have detrimental effects on wheat; some of the most predominant ones are aphids. Four species of aphids having economic effects on wheat crops in Idaho are: Diuraphis noxia, Metopolophium dirhodum, Rhopalosiphum padi, Sitobion avenae. Predictive regression models could be useful for better understanding of the occurrence of these aphid species. Count data for the four species were collected over 17 years via suction traps at 12 locations in wheat fields throughout Idaho. Species specific nonlinear logistic growth models were fitted to each suction trap location to model the aphid accumulation process during the wheat growing season. The nonlinear model used was parameterized to provide inference on three main aphid characteristics, the onset of trapped aphid accumulation, the rate of increase in aphid accumulation, and the maximum accumulated abundance of trapped aphids. Suction trap locations were further aggregated into 5 environments using hierarchical clustering based on climate data. Species specific models were then fitted to each of the 5 environments. Within each environment, the maximum yearly aphid abundance was determined to have a lag (1) autocorrelation structure across years, indicating a biotic feedback. A full nonlinear logistic growth model was then fitted to the entire data set using dummy variable regression to investigate potential climatic environmental patterns in the aphid accumulation process. Predicted models were validated both externally and internally. External validation used suction trap locations in Idaho that were excluded from the model building process to assess the predictive capabilities of the specified models. Internal validation was conducted using bootstrap simulation of the residuals for each model. Statistical models similar to those developed in this study can aid in understanding and evaluating the dynamics of the abundance of cereal crop aphid species in Idaho

    Differences in level of confidence in diabetes care between different groups of trainees: the TOPDOC diabetes study

    Background There is an increasing prevalence of diabetes. Doctors in training, irrespective of specialty, will have patients with diabetes under their care. The aim of this further evaluation of the TOPDOC Diabetes Study data was to identify if there was any variation in confidence in managing diabetes depending on the geographical location of trainees and career aspirations. Methods An online national survey using a pre-validated questionnaire was administered to trainee doctors. A 4-point confidence rating scale was used to rate confidence in managing aspects of diabetes care and a 6-point scale used to quantify how often trainees would contribute to the management of patients with diabetes. Responses were grouped depending on which UK country trainees were based and their intended career choice. Results Trainees in Northern Ireland reported being less confident in IGT diagnosis, use of IV insulin and peri-operative management and were less likely to adjust oral treatment, contact specialist, educate lifestyle, and optimise treatment. Trainees in Scotland were less likely to contact a specialist, but more likely to educate on lifestyle, change insulin, and offer follow-up advice. In Northern Ireland, Undergraduate (UG) and Postgraduate (PG) training in diagnosis was felt less adequate, PG training in emergencies less adequate, and reporting of need for further training higher. Trainees in Wales felt UG training to be inadequate. In Scotland more trainees felt UG training in diagnosis and optimising treatment was inadequate. Physicians were more likely to report confidence in managing patients with diabetes and to engage in different aspects of diabetes care. Aspiring physicians were less likely to feel the need for more training in diabetes care; however a clear majority still felt they needed more training in all aspects of care. Conclusions Doctors in training have poor confidence levels dealing with diabetes related care issues. Although there is variability between different groups of trainees according to geographical location and career aspirations, this is a UK wide issue. There should be a UK wide standardised approach to improving training for junior doctors in diabetes care with local training guided by specific needs.</p

    Occupancy and Abundance of Stream Salamanders along a Specific Conductance Gradient

    In the Central Appalachians (USA), mountaintop-removal mining accompanied by valley fills often leads to streams with elevated specific conductivity (SC). Thus, the ionic composition of freshwaters in this region is hypothesized to be a driver of the distribution and abundance of freshwater taxa, including stream salamanders. We examined the association between SC and stream salamander populations by conducting salamander counts in 30 southeastern Kentucky streams across a continuous gradient of SC that ranged from 30 to 1966 μS/cm. We counted 2319 salamanders across 5 species and, using a hierarchical Bayesian version of the N-mixture model, found a negative association between SC and salamander occupancy rates. This finding was consistent across adults and larvae of the 5 species we examined. Furthermore, we found that most salamander species and life stages showed reduced abundances given occupancy at greater SC levels. For example, estimated mean abundance given occupancy of larval Southern Two-lined Salamanders (Eurycea cirrigera) was 67.69 (95% credible interval 48.31–98.25) ind/10 m at 250 μS/cm and 2.30 (95% credible interval 1.46–3.93) ind/10 m at 2000 μS/cm. The consistent negative association across all species and life stages supports the hypothesis that salamander distributions and abundances are negatively associated with elevated SC of streams in southeastern Kentucky, even though physical and chemical environmental attributes, such as forest cover within stream catchments, were correlated with SC. Restoration of streams affected by mountaintop-removal mining should focus on restoring the ionic compositions that naturally occur in this region

    PREDICTION OF YELLOW STARTHISTLE SURVIVAL AND MOVEMENT OVER TIME AND SPACE

    Yellow starthistle is a noxious weed that has become a serious plant pest with devastating impact on ranching operation and natural resources in western states. Early detection of yellow starthistle and predicting its spread has important managerial implications and greatly reduce the economic losses due to this weed. The dispersal of yellow starthistle consists of two main components, plant survival and seed movement. Resources and direct factors relating to these components are not typically available or are difficult to obtain. Alternatively, topographic factors, such as slope, aspect and elevation, are readily available and can be related to plant survival and seed movement. In this study, several GIS network models incorporating these topographic factors are considered for the prediction of yellow starthistle spread. The models differed in their assessment of the costs of movement derived from these factors. Models were evaluated based on their predictive ability and residual analysis. The optimal model gave an accurate estimate of the dispersal boundary for the study area. Further validation of the estimated model using an independent data set from a larger area also verified its predictive capability
