Hawkmoths (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae) Collected in Grand Traverse and Adjacent Counties, Michigan
Thirty-two (32) species of hawkmoths (Sphingidae) are reported from Grand Traverse and adjacent counties, Michigan, based on collecting carried out in 1979-1997 and an inventory of museum records

The Quiet Reversal of U.S. Climate Change Policy
This paper calls for an immediate and extensive Congressional and national debate about the scope of climate change and the role of the U.S. in addressing this issue before passing any international laws.https://openscholarship.wustl.edu/mlw_papers/1029/thumbnail.jp

Development and verification of a three-dimensional wind measurement sensor hosted on a meteorologically instrumented small multirotor UAS
Small multirotor unmanned aerial systems (UAS) have great potential to effectively investigate the urban boundary layer. Their ability to launch and recover vertically in tight urban spaces, along with their ability to be precisely controlled, including hover, makes them an especially attractive investigation tool for obstacle laden environments. These aircraft characteristics are also conducive to obtaining measurements with both high spatial and temporal resolution. With the motivation to obtain high-resolution measurements, a small multirotor UAS was meteorologically instrumented with both thermodynamic and kinematic sensors. This work details the development and subsequent verification of two orthogonally mounted acoustic resonance ultrasonic anemometers that provide a 3 dimensional solution suitable for measurement of the mean wind and its fluctuating component (i.e. turbulence). Comparison of the geo and time-stamped wind speed and direction measurement was made against a surface mounted anemometer during both indoor and field testing. The system will be deployed in upcoming urban field campaigns in the summer of 2020 and beyond
Toward a Healthier Environment and a Stronger Economy: How to Achieve Common Ground
Economic and environmental interests are typically opponents in the public arena. Most efforts to bridge intellectual differences involve economists trying to get environmentalists to develop an economic way of thinking while conversely, ecologists attempt to sway economists toward kinder environmental values. It is time for a new approach to public policy that takes advantage of the middle ground between these two ideologies. This study presents six specific reforms that make both sound economic and environmental sense. These reforms occur within selected government spending programs, special federal tax provisions, and particular regulatory requirements.https://openscholarship.wustl.edu/mlw_papers/1166/thumbnail.jp
An updated checklist of scale insects (Hemiptera: Coccoidea) of the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador
The information available on Coccoidea in the Galapagos Islands is sparse. Data on the species present, their distribution and host plants were compiled using recent information at the Charles Darwin Research Station and from the literature. Up to January 2008, 80 species from eight families were reported, more than doubling the total known in 2001. Of the 63 species whose origin has been determined, 50 are believed to have been introduced inadvertently on plants, fruits or vegetables, nine are endemic and four more are thought to be native. The low number of endemic and native species suggests that scale insects have been poor at reaching the islands naturally
Freshwater mollusk sampling along the southern I-294 corridor.
Sampled 8 sites at 6 stream crossings• Spent 13.5 person-hours surveying (average of 2.3 mussels collected/hr)• Encountered 31 live individuals of 3 mussel species• Only 2 of the 8 sites had mussels• Recorded the following species:▷Giant Floater, Pyganodon grandis (n=29, 94%), most common▷Paper Pondshell, Utterbackia imbecillus (n=1, 3%)▷Lilliput, Toxolasma parvum (n=1, 3%)▷One native snail, Liver Elimia, Elimia livescens, was abundant in Salt Creek• Invasive Asian Clams, Corbicula fluminea, were common at sites▷Upstream reach of I-294 to Bemis Woods littered with relict shells of native unionidsIllinois State Toll Highway Authorityunpublishednot peer reviewe
