    Recombination Algorithms and Jet Substructure: Pruning as a Tool for Heavy Particle Searches

    We discuss jet substructure in recombination algorithms for QCD jets and single jets from heavy particle decays. We demonstrate that the jet algorithm can introduce significant systematic effects into the substructure. By characterizing these systematic effects and the substructure from QCD, splash-in, and heavy particle decays, we identify a technique, pruning, to better identify heavy particle decays into single jets and distinguish them from QCD jets. Pruning removes protojets typical of soft, wide angle radiation, improves the mass resolution of jets reconstructing a heavy particle decay, and decreases the QCD background. We show that pruning provides significant improvements over unpruned jets in identifying top quarks and W bosons and separating them from a QCD background, and may be useful in a search for heavy particles.Comment: 33 pages, 42 figure

    Consistent Factorization of Jet Observables in Exclusive Multijet Cross-Sections

    We demonstrate the consistency at the next-to-leading-logarithmic (NLL) level of a factorization theorem based on Soft-Collinear Effective Theory (SCET) for jet shapes in e+e- collisions. We consider measuring jet observables in exclusive multijet final states defined with cone and k_T-type jet algorithms. Consistency of the factorization theorem requires that the renormalization group evolution of hard, jet, and soft functions is such that the physical cross-section is independent of the factorization scale mu. The anomalous dimensions of the various factorized pieces, however, depend on the color representation of jets, choice of jet observable, the number of jets whose shapes are measured, and the jet algorithm, making it highly nontrivial to satisfy the consistency condition. We demonstrate the intricate cancellations between anomalous dimensions that occur at the NLL level, so that, up to power corrections that we identify, our factorization of the jet shape distributions is consistent for any number of quark and gluon jets, for any number of jets whose shapes are measured or unmeasured, for any angular size R of the jets, and for any of the algorithms we consider. Corrections to these results are suppressed by the SCET expansion parameter lambda (the ratio of soft to collinear or collinear to hard scales) and in the jet separation measure 1/t^2 = tan^2(R/2)/tan^2(psi/2), where psi is the angular separation between jets.     The purpose of the research is to examine the effect of industry standard urban design treatments for streetscaping of Main Streets on traffic accident rates and the pedestrian's perception of accessibility and safety. Existing research (Rosenblatt, Bahar) has indicated that the use of roadside landscaping is reducing vehicular traffic accident rates both in terms of frequency and severity. This paper identifies the next research steps being developed at Texas A&M University which will create better understanding of the impact of specific streetscape design treatment on pedestrian safety and accessibility. These standards will be evaluated for the effect on bicycle, pedestrian and wheelchair performance within the treated corridors

    Impact of Incremental Perfusion Loss on Oxygen Transport in a Capillary Network Mathematical Model.

    OBJECTIVES: To quantify how incremental capillary perfusion loss, such as that seen in experimental models of sepsis, affects tissue oxygenation using a computation model of oxygen transport. METHODS: A computational model was applied to capillary networks with dimensions 84x168x342 (NI) and 70x157x268 (NII) ÎŒm, reconstructed in vivo from rat skeletal muscle. Functional capillary density (FCD) loss was applied incrementally up to ~40% and combined with high tissue oxygen consumption to simulate severe sepsis. RESULTS: A loss of ~40% FCD loss decreased median tissue PO2 to 22.9 and 20.1 mmHg in NI and NII compared to 28.1 and 27.5 mmHg under resting conditions. Increasing red blood cell supply rate (SR) to baseline levels returned tissue PO2 to within 5% of baseline. High consumption combined with a 40% FCD loss, resulted in tissue anoxia in both network volumes and median tissue PO2 of 11.5 and 8.9 mmHg in NI and NII respectively; median tissue PO2 was recovered to baseline levels by increasing total SR 3 - 4 fold. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest a substantial increase in total SR is required in order to compensate for impaired oxygen delivery as a result of loss of capillary perfusion and increased oxygen consumption during sepsis.     Unsteady heat and mass transfer of a blunt leading edge using hybrid LES-RANS

    A novel wall-proximity based hybrid LES-RANS approach has been applied for the study of a blunt leading edge flat plate with constant wall heat flux. The Reynolds number of the flow is about 10,200 based on half of the plate thickness. Results of the simulation are examined by comparing the velocity and heat transfer profiles with relevant measurements. Analysis has been carried out to study the relation between the unsteady flow features and the surface heat transfer

    Neutrino Fluxes from NUHM LSP Annihilations in the Sun

    We extend our previous studies of the neutrino fluxes expected from neutralino LSP annihilations inside the Sun to include variants of the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (MSSM) with squark, slepton and gaugino masses constrained to be universal at the GUT scale, but allowing one or two non-universal supersymmetry-breaking parameters contributing to the Higgs masses (NUHM1,2). As in the constrained MSSM (CMSSM) with universal Higgs masses, there are large regions of the NUHM parameter space where the LSP density inside the Sun is not in equilibrium, so that the annihilation rate may be far below the capture rate, and there are also large regions where the capture rate is not dominated by spin-dependent LSP-proton scattering. The spectra possible in the NUHM are qualitatively similar to those in the CMSSM. We calculate neutrino-induced muon fluxes above a threshold energy of 10 GeV, appropriate for the IceCube/DeepCore detector, for points where the NUHM yields the correct cosmological relic density for representative choices of the NUHM parameters. We find that the IceCube/DeepCore detector can probe regions of the NUHM parameter space in addition to analogues of the focus-point strip and the tip of the coannihilation strip familiar from the CMSSM. These include regions with enhanced Higgsino-gaugino mixing in the LSP composition, that occurs where neutralino mass eigenstates cross over.     Ethnic diversification and neighbourhood mixing : a rapid response analysis of the 2021 Census of England and Wales

    Funding from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) is acknowledged gratefully, for the project ‘Geographies of Ethnic Diversity and Inequalities (GEDI)’ (award ES/W012499/1).This paper provides a rapid response analysis of the changing geographies of ethnic diversity and segregation in England and Wales using Census data covering the last 30 years (1991, 2001, 2011 and 2021), a period of significant social, economic and political change. Presenting the first detailed analysis of 2021 Census small area ethnic group data, we find that the growth of ethnic diversity at the national level is mirrored across residential neighbourhoods. Increasing numbers of neighbourhoods are home to a substantial mix of people from different ethnic groups, and this growing neighbourhood ethnic diversity has been spatially diffusing across all regions of England and Wales. We argue that to understand the ethnic mosaic across England and Wales, it is more illuminating to consider mix than majority: places labelled as 'minority-majority' are, in fact, ethnically diverse spaces, home to sizable proportions of people from many ethnic groups.     Complex coastlines responding to climate change: do shoreline shapes reflect present forcing or “remember” the distant past?

    A range of planform morphologies emerge along sandy coastlines as a function of offshore wave climate. It has been implicitly assumed that the morphological response time is rapid compared to the timescales of wave climate change, meaning that coastal morphologies simply reflect the extant wave climate. This assumption has been explored by focussing on the response of two distinctive morphological coastlines – flying spits and cuspate capes – to changing wave climates, using a coastline evolution model. Results indicate that antecedent conditions are important in determining the evolution of morphologies, and that sandy coastlines can demonstrate hysteresis behaviour. In particular, antecedent morphology is particularly important in the evolution of flying spits, with characteristic timescales of morphological adjustment on the order of centuries for large spits. Characteristic timescales vary with the square of aspect ratios of capes and spits; for spits, these timescales are an order of magnitude longer than for capes (centuries vs. decades). When wave climates change more slowly than the relevant characteristic timescales, coastlines are able to adjust in a quasi-equilibrium manner. Our results have important implications for the management of sandy coastlines where decisions may be implicitly and incorrectly based on the assumption that present-day coastlines are in equilibrium with current conditions

    MCP1 haplotypes associated with protection from pulmonary tuberculosis

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 (MCP-1) is involved in the recruitment of lymphocytes and monocytes and their migration to sites of injury and cellular immune reactions. In a Ghanaian tuberculosis (TB) case-control study group, associations of the <it>MCP1 </it>-362C and the <it>MCP1 </it>-2581G alleles with resistance to TB were recently described. The latter association was in contrast to genetic effects previously described in study groups originating from Mexico, Korea, Peru and Zambia. This inconsistency prompted us to further investigate the <it>MCP1 </it>gene in order to determine causal variants or haplotypes genetically and functionally.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A 14 base-pair deletion in the first <it>MCP1 </it>intron, int1del554-567, was strongly associated with protection against pulmonary TB (OR = 0.84, CI 0.77-0.92, P<sub>corrected </sub>= 0.00098). Compared to the wildtype combination, a haplotype comprising the -2581G and -362C promoter variants and the intronic deletion conferred an even stronger protection than did the -362C variant alone (OR = 0.78, CI 0.69-0.87, P<sub>nominal </sub>= 0.00002; adjusted P<sub>global </sub>= 0.0028). In a luciferase reporter gene assay, a significant reduction of luciferase gene expression was observed in the two constructs carrying the <it>MCP1 </it>mutations -2581 A or G plus the combination -362C and int1del554-567 compared to the wildtype haplotype (P = 0.02 and P = 0.006). The associated variants, in particular the haplotypes composed of these latter variants, result in decreased MCP-1 expression and a decreased risk of pulmonary TB.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>In addition to the results of the previous study of the Ghanaian TB case-control sample, we have now identified the haplotype combination -2581G/-362C/int1del554-567 that mediates considerably stronger protection than does the <it>MCP1 </it>-362C allele alone (OR = 0.78, CI 0.69-0.87 vs OR = 0.83, CI 0.76-0.91). Our findings in both the genetic analysis and the reporter gene study further indicate a largely negligible role of the variant at position -2581 in the Ghanaian population studied.</p
