    Design of a hand-held user interface for the active joint brace

Vita.Includes bibliographical references (p. 23).The continued development of the Active Joint Brace, a powered orthosis, required that a suitable user interface be designed to control the brace. Since the brace is an electronically-controlled mechanical, medical device, it was important that the user interface (UI) provide both a proper interface to the software that controls the brace, and be in conformance with human factors data. The constraints provided by the existing electronics and software of the brace, combined with suitable ergonomic data, were used to inform the design of a hand-held user interface device, pictured below. The UI features one-handed operation, utilizing an LCD character display and speaker for output devices and a navigation switch for an input device. In preparation for the new UI, the existing menu system was also reorganized for ease-of-use. In preliminary user testing within the development team, the UI has been judged as satisfactory, with only a few minor changes needed to the enclosure.by Christopher P. Possinger.S.B

    Core design for use with precision composite reflectors

    A uniformly flexible core, and method for manufacturing the same, is disclosed for use between the face plates of a sandwich structure. The core is made of a plurality of thin corrugated strips, the corrugations being defined by a plurality of peaks and valleys connected to one another by a plurality of diagonal risers. The corrugated strips are orthogonally criss-crossed to form the core. The core is particularly suitable for use with high accuracy spherically curved sandwich structures because undesirable stresses in the curved face plates are minimized due to the uniform flexibility characteristics of the core in both the X and Y directions. The core is self venting because of the open geometry of the corrugations. The core can be made from any suitable composite, metal, or polymer. Thermal expansion problems in sandwich structures may be minimized by making the core from the same composite materials that are selected in the manufacture of the curved face plates because of their low coefficients of thermal expansion. Where the strips are made of a composite material, the core may be constructed by first cutting an already cured corrugated sheet into a plurality of corrugated strips and then secondarily bonding the strips to one another or, alternatively, by lying a plurality of uncured strips orthogonally over one another in a suitable jig and then curing and bonding the entire plurality of strips to one another in a single operation

    A Jail Diversion Program for Veterans with Co-Occuring Disorders: MISSION - DIRECT VET

    The Massachusetts Department of Mental Health, in partnership with investigators from the University of Massachusetts Medical School, the Veterans Administration, and numerous state agencies, have developed MISSION DIRECT VET, a court-based jail diversion program with a priority population of veterans. Goals of this SAMHSA-funded program include identifying criminal defendants who are veterans with mental illness and substance use disorders prior to sentencing, proposing service and treatment option as alternatives to incarceration, and facilitating service coordination between treatment providers and the criminal justice system.     BPS states of D=4 N=1 supersymmetry

    We find the combinations of momentum and domain-wall charges corresponding to BPS states preserving 1/4, 1/2 or 3/4 of D=4 N=1 supersymmetry, and we show how the supersymmetry algebra implies their stability. These states form the boundary of the convex cone associated with the Jordan algebra of 4×44\times 4 real symmetric matrices, and we explore some implications of the associated geometry. For the Wess-Zumino model we derive the conditions for preservation of 1/4 supersymmetry when one of two parallel domain-walls is rotated and in addition show that this model does not admit any classical configurations with 3/4 supersymmetry. Our analysis also provides information about BPS states of N=1 D=4 anti-de Sitter supersymmetry.Comment: Latex, 27 pages.
