    Isomer triggering via nuclear excitation by electron capture

    Triggering of long-lived nuclear isomeric states via coupling to the atomic shells in the process of nuclear excitation by electron capture (NEEC) is studied. NEEC occurring in highly-charged ions can excite the isomeric state to a triggering level that subsequently decays to the ground state. We present total cross sections for NEEC isomer triggering considering experimentally confirmed low-lying triggering levels and reaction rates based on realistic experimental parameters in ion storage rings. A comparison with other isomer triggering mechanisms shows that, among these, NEEC is the most efficient.Comment: minor changes - updated to the final version; 4 pages, 1 figur

    Electric dipole-forbidden nuclear transitions driven by super-intense laser fields

    Electric dipole-forbidden transitions of nuclei interacting with super-intense laser fields are investigated considering stable isotopes with suitable low-lying first excited states. Different classes of transitions are identified, and all magnetic sublevels corresponding to the near-resonantly driven nuclear transition are included in the description of the nuclear quantum system. We find that large transition matrix elements and convenient resonance energies qualify nuclear M1 transitions as good candidates for the coherent driving of nuclei. We discuss the implications of resonant interaction of intense laser fields with nuclei beyond the dipole approximation for the controlled preparation of excited nuclear states and important aspects of possible experiments aimed at observing these effects.Comment: 20 pages, 2 tables, 3 figures, minor modifications and update to the published versio

    Indications and Outcomes of Patients Receiving Therapeutic Plasma Exchange under Critical Care Conditions: A Retrospective Eleven-Year Single-Center Study at a Tertiary Care Center

    Background: Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) is frequently performed in critical care settings for heterogenous indications. However, specific intensive care unit (ICU) data regarding TPE indications, patient characteristics and technical details are sparse. Methods: We performed a retrospective, single-center study using data from January 2010 until August 2021 for patients treated with TPE in an ICU setting at the University Hospital Zurich. Data collected included patient characteristics and outcomes, ICU-specific parameters, as well as apheresis-specific technical parameters and complications. Results: We identified n = 105 patients receiving n = 408 TPEs for n = 24 indications during the study period. The most common was thrombotic microangiopathies (TMA) (38%), transplant-associated complications (16.3%) and vasculitis (14%). One-third of indications (35.2%) could not be classified according to ASFA. Anaphylaxis was the most common TPE-related complication (6.7%), while bleeding complications were rare (1%). The median duration of ICU stay was 8 ± 14 days. Ventilator support, renal replacement therapy or vasopressors were required in 59 (56.2%), 26 (24.8%), and 35 (33.3%) patients, respectively, and 6 (5.7%) patients required extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. The overall hospital survival rate was 88.6%. Conclusion: Our study provides valuable real-world data on heterogenous TPE indications for patients in the ICU setting, potentially supporting decision-making

    The nuclear AC-Stark shift in super-intense laser fields

    The direct interaction of super-intense laser fields in the optical frequency domain with nuclei is studied. As main observable, we consider the nuclear AC-Stark shift of low-lying nuclear states due to the off-resonant excitation by the laser field. We include the case of accelerated nuclei to be able to control the frequency and the intensity of the laser field in the nuclear rest frame over a wide range of parameters. We find that AC-Stark shifts of the same order as in typical quantum optical systems relative to the respective transition frequencies are feasible with state-of-the-art or near-future laser field intensities and moderate acceleration of the target nuclei. Along with this shift, we find laser-induced modifications to the proton root-mean-square radii and to the proton density distribution. We thus expect direct laser-nucleus interaction to become of relevance together with other super-intense light-matter interaction processes such as pair creation.Comment: 10 pages, 2 eps figure

    A comparative study of semi-empirical noise emission models based on the PANAM and sonAIR aircraft noise simulation tools

    In the context of aircraft noise simulations, an accurate representation of the aircraft noise sources is crucial so that reliable predictions can be obtained. In this contribution, we present a comparative study between the predictions provided by the emission models based on the DLR’s in-house PANAM tool and the sonAIR simulation software. Both are based on semi-empirical descriptions of the engine and airframe noise contributions, meaning that the emission levels are modeled separately for each noise source according to the operational conditions of the aircraft. This allows the comparison of the emission models not only in terms of the aircraft’s overall noise levels, but also regarding its different noise sources. The comparative study considers models representing the noise emissions of an A319 aircraft, which are provided by both simulation tools but further simulated within the sonAIR software environment in order to yield noise immission levels on a large calculation area. In general, a good agreement is observed for the departure procedure due to the similar performance of the engine noise models. In contrast, larger differences are observed during the approach procedure and at larger distances from the runway, which might be explained by differences in the airframe noise models

    BP180-specific IgG is associated with skin adverse events, therapy response and overall survival in non-small cell lung cancer patients treated with checkpoint inhibitors

    BACKGROUND: Anti-PD1/PD-L1 therapy frequently entails immune-related adverse events (irAEs) and biomarkers to predict irAEs are lacking. While checkpoint inhibitors have been found to re-invigorate T-cells, the relevance of autoantibodies remains elusive. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to explore whether IgG autoantibodies directed against co-expressed antigens by tumor tissue and healthy skin correlate with skin irAEs and therapy outcome. METHODS: We measured skin-specific IgG via ELISA in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients, who received anti-PD1/PD-L1 treatment between July 2015 and September 2017 at the Kantonsspital St. Gallen. Sera were sampled at baseline and during therapy after 8 weeks. RESULTS: Analysis of publicly available tumor expression data revealed that NSCLC and skin co-express BP180, BP230 and type VII collagen. Of 40 recruited patients, 16 (40%) developed a skin irAE. Only elevated anti-BP180 IgG at baseline significantly correlated with the development of skin irAEs (P=.04), therapy response (P=.01) and overall survival (P=.04). LIMITATIONS: The patients were recruited in a single tertiary care center. CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggest that the level of anti-BP180 IgG of NSCLC patients at baseline is associated with better therapy response, overall survival and a higher probability to develop skin irAEs during anti-PD1/PD-L1 treatment

Characterizing a NEA-DE, we argue that its cross-sectoral, integrative approach would have the advantages of increased scientific understanding, addressing specific policy questions and creating science-policy dialogues. Challenges include objections against a utilitarian perspective, reservations concerning power relations, and responsibilities concerning the funding

    Healthy aging depends on removal of damaged cellular material that is in part mediated by autophagy. The nutritional status of cells affects both aging and autophagy through as-yet-elusive metabolic circuitries. Here, we show that nucleocytosolic acetyl-coenzyme A (AcCoA) production is a metabolic repressor of autophagy during aging in yeast. Blocking the mitochondrial route to AcCoA by deletion of the CoA-transferase ACH1 caused cytosolic accumulation of the AcCoA precursor acetate. This led to hyperactivation of nucleocytosolic AcCoA-synthetase Acs2p, triggering histone acetylation, repression of autophagy genes, and an age-dependent defect in autophagic flux, culminating in a reduced lifespan. Inhibition of nutrient signaling failed to restore, while simultaneous knockdown of ACS2 reinstated, autophagy and survival of ach1 mutant. Brain-specific knockdown of Drosophila AcCoA synthetase was sufficient to enhance autophagic protein clearance and prolong lifespan. Since AcCoA integrates various nutrition pathways, our findings may explain diet-dependent lifespan and autophagy regulation

    The FUSE binding proteins FBP1 and FBP3 are potential c-myc regulators in renal, but not in prostate and bladder cancer

    BACKGROUND: The three far-upstream element (FUSE) binding proteins (FBP1, FBP2, and FBP3) belong to an ancient family of single-stranded DNA binding proteins which are required for proper regulation of the c-myc proto-oncogene. Whereas it is known that c-myc alterations play a completely different role in various carcinomas of the urogenital tract, the relevance of FBPs is unclear. Methods: FBP1, FBP3 and c-myc expression was studied in 105 renal cell, 95 prostate and 112 urinary bladder carcinomas by immunohistochemistry using tissue microarrays. High rates of FBP1 and FBP3 expression were observed in all cancer types. RESULTS: There was a concomitant up-regulation of FBP1 and FBP3 in renal cell and prostate carcinomas (p<0.001 both). C-myc expression was detectable in 21% of prostate, 30% of renal and 34% of urothelial carcinomas. Interestingly, strong FBP1 and FBP3 expression was associated with c-myc up-regulation in clear cell renal cell carcinomas (p<0.001 and 0.05 resp.), but not in bladder or prostate cancer. CONCLUSIONS: The correlation between FBP1/FBP3, c-myc and high proliferation rate in renal cell carcinoma provides strong in vivo support for the suggested role of FBP1 and FBP3 as activators of c-myc. The frequent up-regulation of FBP1 and FBP3 in urothelial and prostate carcinoma suggests that FBPs also have an important function in gene regulation of these tumors
