    Expatriate time to proficiency: individual antecedents and the moderating effect of home country

    Purpose: This study examines: 1) the direct impact of individual variables (cultural openness, social orientation, willingness to communicate, confidence in own technical abilities, active stress resistance, prior international experience) on expatriate time to proficiency; and 2) the moderating effects of the home country on the relationships between these individual variables and expatriate time to proficiency. Methodology. We use a quantitative, self-administered questionnaire to gather data from assigned expatriates from different countries in India, analysed through partial least squares. Findings. The findings show first, that four individual variables, i.e. social orientation, willingness to communicate, confidence in technical abilities and active stress resistance reduce expatriate time to proficiency in the global sample. Second, the individual antecedents of expatriate time to proficiency vary significantly across home countries. Theoretical implications. Our results confirm the importance of individual antecedents in explaining expatriate TTP and the importance of context in the study of expatriates’ cross-cultural effectiveness. We also propose new, shorter measures for the individual antecedents. Practical implications. The practical implications for HRM professionals relate mainly to selection and cross-cultural training. Expatriates may also get a better understanding of the individual and contextual variables that impact their time to proficiency. Originality/ Value. We show that individual antecedents interact with context, here home country, to predict expatriate time to proficiency in an under-researched host country, India.     Modulation of Angiogenic and Inflammatory Response in Glioblastoma by Hypoxia

    Glioblastoma are rapidly proliferating brain tumors in which hypoxia is readily recognizable, as indicated by focal or extensive necrosis and vascular proliferation, two independent diagnostic criteria for glioblastoma. Gene expression profiling of glioblastoma revealed a gene expression signature associated with hypoxia-regulated genes. The correlated gene set emerging from unsupervised analysis comprised known hypoxia-inducible genes involved in angiogenesis and inflammation such as VEGF and BIRC3, respectively. The relationship between hypoxia-modulated angiogenic genes and inflammatory genes was associated with outcome in our cohort of glioblastoma patients treated within prospective clinical trials of combined chemoradiotherapy. The hypoxia regulation of several new genes comprised in this cluster including ZNF395, TNFAIP3, and TREM1 was experimentally confirmed in glioma cell lines and primary monocytes exposed to hypoxia in vitro. Interestingly, the cluster seems to characterize differential response of tumor cells, stromal cells and the macrophage/microglia compartment to hypoxic conditions. Most genes classically associated with the inflammatory compartment are part of the NF-kappaB signaling pathway including TNFAIP3 and BIRC3 that have been shown to be involved in resistance to chemotherapy

    Formation of Super-Earths

    Super-Earths are the most abundant planets known to date and are characterized by having sizes between that of Earth and Neptune, typical orbital periods of less than 100 days and gaseous envelopes that are often massive enough to significantly contribute to the planet's overall radius. Furthermore, super-Earths regularly appear in tightly-packed multiple-planet systems, but resonant configurations in such systems are rare. This chapters summarizes current super-Earth formation theories. It starts from the formation of rocky cores and subsequent accretion of gaseous envelopes. We follow the thermal evolution of newly formed super-Earths and discuss their atmospheric mass loss due to disk dispersal, photoevaporation, core-cooling and collisions. We conclude with a comparison of observations and theoretical predictions, highlighting that even super-Earths that appear as barren rocky cores today likely formed with primordial hydrogen and helium envelopes and discuss some paths forward for the future.Comment: Invited review accepted for publication in the 'Handbook of Exoplanets,' Planet Formation section, Springer Reference Works, Juan Antonio Belmonte and Hans Deeg, Ed

    A cloud platform for automating and sharing analysis of raw simulation data from high throughput polymer molecular dynamics simulations

    Open material databases storing hundreds of thousands of material structures and their corresponding properties have become the cornerstone of modern computational materials science. Yet, the raw outputs of the simulations, such as the trajectories from molecular dynamics simulations and charge densities from density functional theory calculations, are generally not shared due to their huge size. In this work, we describe a cloud-based platform to facilitate the sharing of raw data and enable the fast post-processing in the cloud to extract new properties defined by the user. As an initial demonstration, our database currently includes 6286 molecular dynamics trajectories for amorphous polymer electrolytes and 5.7 terabytes of data. We create a public analysis library at https://github.com/TRI-AMDD/htp_md to extract multiple properties from the raw data, using both expert designed functions and machine learning models. The analysis is run automatically with computation in the cloud, and results then populate a database that can be accessed publicly. Our platform encourages users to contribute both new trajectory data and analysis functions via public interfaces. Newly analyzed properties will be incorporated into the database. Finally, we create a front-end user interface at https://www.htpmd.matr.io for browsing and visualization of our data. We envision the platform to be a new way of sharing raw data and new insights for the computational materials science community.Comment: 21 pages, 7 figure

    Type IIb Supernova SN 2011dh: Spectra and Photometry from the Ultraviolet to the Near-Infrared

    We report spectroscopic and photometric observations of the Type IIb SN 2011dh obtained between 4 and 34 days after the estimated date of explosion (May 31.5 UT). The data cover a wide wavelength range from 2,000 Angstroms in the UV to 2.4 microns in the NIR. Optical spectra provide line profiles and velocity measurements of HI, HeI, CaII and FeII that trace the composition and kinematics of the SN. NIR spectra show that helium is present in the atmosphere as early as 11 days after the explosion. A UV spectrum obtained with the STIS reveals that the UV flux for SN 2011dh is low compared to other SN IIb. The HI and HeI velocities in SN 2011dh are separated by about 4,000 km/s at all phases. We estimate that the H-shell of SN 2011dh is about 8 times less massive than the shell of SN 1993J and about 3 times more massive than the shell of SN 2008ax. Light curves (LC) for twelve passbands are presented. The maximum bolometric luminosity of 1.8±0.2×10421.8 \pm 0.2 \times 10^{42} erg s1^{-1} occurred about 22 days after the explosion. NIR emission provides more than 30% of the total bolometric flux at the beginning of our observations and increases to nearly 50% of the total by day 34. The UV produces 16% of the total flux on day 4, 5% on day 9 and 1% on day 34. We compare the bolometric light curves of SN 2011dh, SN 2008ax and SN 1993J. The LC are very different for the first twelve days after the explosions but all three SN IIb display similar peak luminosities, times of peak, decline rates and colors after maximum. This suggests that the progenitors of these SN IIb may have had similar compositions and masses but they exploded inside hydrogen shells that that have a wide range of masses. The detailed observations presented here will help evaluate theoretical models for this supernova and lead to a better understanding of SN IIb.Comment: 23 pages, 14 figures, 9 tables, accepted by Ap
