EnglishThis study investigates the impacts of the determinants of Bangladesh export functions on the export flows to the USA during the period of free and floating exchange rate regime in Bangladesh in order to review the Linder hypotheses postulated in the International trade theory in 1961. The gravity-type model was estimated using monthly data for the sample period May 2003 – May 2010. The findings of the study support Linder Hypotheses exactly. Among the coefficient estimates of four variables only one variable is found to be statistically highly significant. And the signs of all variable coefficients are exactly the same as postulated by Linder. Thus, the findings of this study are fully in support of the validation of the Linder\u27s Hypotheses in International trade theory

Glitch subtraction from gravitational wave data using adaptive spline fitting

Transient signals of instrumental and environmental origins ( glitches ) in gravitational wave data elevate the false alarm rate of searches for astrophysical signals and reduce their sensitivity. Glitches that directly overlap astrophysical signals hinder their detection and worsen parameter estimation errors. As the fraction of data occupied by detectable astrophysical signals will be higher in next generation detectors, such problematic overlaps could become more frequent. These adverse effects of glitches can be mitigated by estimating and subtracting them out from the data, but their unpredictable waveforms and large morphological diversity pose a challenge. Subtraction of glitches using data from auxiliary sensors as predictors works but not for the majority of cases. Thus, there is a need for nonparametric glitch mitigation methods that do not require auxiliary data, work for a large variety of glitches, and have minimal effect on astrophysical signals in the case of overlaps. In order to cope with the high rate of glitches, it is also desirable that such methods be computationally fast. We show that adaptive spline fitting, in which the placement of free knots is optimized to estimate both smooth and non-smooth curves in noisy data, offers a promising approach to satisfying these requirements for broadband short-duration glitches, the type that appear quite frequently. The method is demonstrated on glitches drawn from three distinct classes in the Gravity Spy database as well as on the glitch that overlapped the double neutron star signal GW170817. The impact of glitch subtraction on the GW170817 signal, or those like it injected into the data, is seen to be negligible

The methanol extract of Corypha taliera fruits as well as its n-hexane, carbon tetrachloride, dichloromethane and aqueous soluble fractions were subjected to screening for antioxidant, antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities. The methanolic crude extract exhibited the highest antioxidant activity (IC50 19.33 μg/ml as compared to 9.5 μg/ml for the standard agent, BHT). The crude methanol extract and its carbon tetrachloride, dichloromethane and aqueous soluble fractions showed mild to moderate inhibition of microbial growth against some of the tested organisms. All the extractives exhibited strong cytotoxic properties, among which the methanol extract revealed the strongest cytotixicity (LC50 = 0.43 μg/ml).Colegio de Farmacéuticos de la Provincia de Buenos Aire

Education for Human Resources Development in Bangladesh: Policies,Plans, and Issues

    Get PDF
Human resources development (HRD) through education is a long term endeavor in Bangladesh, and this article brings out the need to invest more heavily in this area. If the target level of 7.3 percent GDP growth in the Fifth Five Year Plan is to be achieved, hard issues of priorities will need to be faced in deciding on inter-and intrasectoral allocation of public funds. The purpose of this article is to give a broad outlook of what is currently happening at various levels and structures of HRD in this country as well as of developments over the past 30 years or so. The authors describe the whole process with three objectives in mind: To examine the current situation of HRD; to examine policies and plans so far made for HRD; and to critically pinpoint obstacles to HRD and bring forth some issues and policy recommendations for discussion and implementation. The discussion emphasizes the point that a better education system bridges HRD and economic development

Salmonella Typhi and Plasmodium falciparum Co-infection in a 12-year Old Girl with Haemoglobin E Trait from a Non-malarious Area in Bangladesh

A 12-year old girl from Uttar Badda, Dhaka, Bangladesh, was admitted to the Dhaka Hospital of ICDDR,B, with a 23-day history of fever and diarrhoea. After admission, she was treated for culture-proven Salmonella Typhi-associated infection and was discovered to be heterozygous for haemoglobin E. Despite treatment with appropriate antibiotics, the patient's condition did not improve, prompting further investigation, which revealed malaria due to Plasmodium falciparum. Dhaka is considered a malaria-free zone, and the patient denied recent travel outside Dhaka. Subsequently, the patient recovered fully on antimalarial therapy

Evaluation of [14C] and [13C]Sucrose as Blood-Brain Barrier Permeability Markers

Non-specific quantitation of [14C]sucrose in blood and brain has been routinely used as a quantitative measure of the in vivo blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity. However, the reported apparent brain uptake clearance (Kin) of the marker varies widely (∼100 fold). We investigated the accuracy of the use of the marker in comparison with a stable isotope of sucrose ([13C]sucrose) measured by a specific LC-MS/MS method. Rats received single doses of each marker, and the Kin values were determined. Surprisingly, the Kin value of [13C]sucrose was 6-7 fold lower than that of [14C]sucrose. Chromatographic fractionation after in vivo administration of [14C]sucrose indicated that the majority of the brain content of radioactivity belonged to compounds other than the intact [14C]sucrose. However, mechanistic studies failed to reveal any substantial metabolism of the marker. The water: octanol partition coefficient of [14C]sucrose was \u3e 2 fold higher than that of [13C]sucrose, indicating presence of lipid-soluble impurities in the [14C]sucrose solution. Our data indicate that [14C]sucrose overestimates the true BBB permeability to sucrose. We suggest that specific quantitation of the stable isotope (13C) of sucrose is a more accurate alternative to the current widespread use of the radioactive sucrose as a BBB marker

A Comparative Analysis of Distributed Ledger Technology Platforms

    Get PDF
Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) has emerged as one of the most disruptive technologies in the last decade. It promises to change the way people do their business, track their products, and manage their personal data. Though the concept of DLT was first implemented in 2009 as Bitcoin, it has gained significant attention only in the past few years. During this time, different DLT enthusiasts and commercial companies have proposed and developed several DLT platforms. These platforms are usually categorized as public vs private, general-purpose vs application-specific and so on. As a growing number of people are interested to build DLT applications, it is important to understand their underlying architecture and capabilities in order to determine which DLT platform should be leveraged for a specific DLT application. In addition, the platforms need to be evaluated and critically analyzed to assess their applicability, resiliency and sustainability in the long run. In this paper, we have surveyed several leading DLT platforms and evaluated their capabilities based on a number of quantitative and qualitative criteria. The comparative analysis presented in this paper will help the DLT developers and architects to choose the best platform as per their requirement(s)
