    The prevailing situation in the fisheries sector in many countries of the world can be briefly stated as (1) insufficient information on fish resources, (2) diminishing stock and (3) conflicting uses of coastal areas and types of fishing. Since there is free accessibility to the exploitable resources in the sea, the natural tendency is to make more and more without regard to the real availability. The need for fishery management assumed importance in recent years on account of the uncontrolled, or rather reckless, exploitation of the resources in many countries [leading to depletion of stock. Although according to available information the level of exploitation of the fishery resources in our country in general is far below the optimum level, there seems to be too much concentration in, certain areas and in respect to certain specks which perhaps is a reflection of the lack of fishery management policies or their implementation

    Uncertainty-based optimal energy retrofit methodology for building heat electrification with enhanced energy flexibility and climate adaptability

    To reach net zero emissions by 2050, the UK government relies heavily on heat degasification in buildings by using heat pump technology. However, existing buildings may have terminal radiators that require a higher operating temperature than what heat pumps typically provide. Increasing the size of radiators and thermally insulating building envelopes could be a potential solution, but the feasibility of these practices is uncertain due to space constraints and high retrofit costs. This study investigates the feasibility and potential benefits of incorporating air-source heat pumps into existing gas boiler heating systems to meet heating demands. The proposed probabilistic optimal air-source heat pump design method enhances energy flexibility and climate adaptability, taking into account a wide range of uncertainty sources and multiple flexibility services (e.g., energy and ancillary services). Heating systems of three educational buildings at the University of Cambridge are used as a testbed to assess and validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, under future climate scenarios and projected decreases in heating demand due to climate change. Results indicate that the best retrofit alternative of the hybrid heating system reduces carbon emissions by 88%, total costs by 54% over its lifespan, and has an average payback period of around 3 years. Air-source heat pumps can meet the majority of the heating demand (around 80%) with gas boilers used for “top-up” heating during high demand. Furthermore, air-source heat pumps' design capacity can fulfil future cooling demand even if retrofit optimization is initially focused on meeting heating needs

    Tunneling Study of the Charge-Ordering Gap on the Surface of La0.350_{0.350}Pr0.275_{0.275}Ca0.375_{0.375}MnO3_3 Thin Films

    Variable temperature scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy studies on (110) oriented epitaxial thin films of La0.350_{0.350}Pr0.275_{0.275}Ca0.375_{0.375}MnO3_3 are reported in the temperature range of 77 to 340 K. The films, grown on lattice matched NdGaO3_3 substrates, show a hysteretic metal-insulator transition in resistivity at 170 K. The topographic STM images show step-terrace morphology while the conductance images display a nearly homogeneous surface. The normalized conductance spectra at low temperatures (T<<150 K) show an energy gap of 0.5 eV while for T\geq180 K a gap of 0.16 eV is found from the activated behavior of the zero bias conductance. The presence of energy gap and the absence of phase separation on the surface over more than 2 μ\mum×\times2 μ\mum area contradicts the metallic behavior seen in resistivity measurements at low temperatures. We discuss the measured energy gap in terms of the stabilization of the insulating CO phase at the film surface.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures To appear in Phys. Rev.

    Structure of a nucleosome-bound MuvB transcription factor complex reveals DNA remodelling.

    Genes encoding the core cell cycle machinery are transcriptionally regulated by the MuvB family of protein complexes in a cell cycle-specific manner. Complexes of MuvB with the transcription factors B-MYB and FOXM1 activate mitotic genes during cell proliferation. The mechanisms of transcriptional regulation by these complexes are still poorly characterised. Here, we combine biochemical analysis and in vitro reconstitution, with structural analysis by cryo-electron microscopy and cross-linking mass spectrometry, to functionally examine these complexes. We find that the MuvB:B-MYB complex binds and remodels nucleosomes, thereby exposing nucleosomal DNA. This remodelling activity is supported by B-MYB which directly binds the remodelled DNA. Given the remodelling activity on the nucleosome, we propose that the MuvB:B-MYB complex functions as a pioneer transcription factor complex. In this work, we rationalise prior biochemical and cellular studies and provide a molecular framework of interactions on a protein complex that is key for cell cycle regulation

    Indian forests have the potential to safeguard the livelihood of forest dwelling people, particularly tribal people, who are among the most disadvantaged groups in our society. Tribal people generally depend on forests for their cultural, spiritual, and to varying degree of economic needs. Fishing is one of the important livelihood activities of the tribal community since the time immortal. Fishing provides the source of livelihood as well as nutritional security to the tribal family significantly. An explorative study was conducted in participatory mode to explore the eco-friendly fishing methods. Totally, 300 respondents were selected for this study. The data was documented with the help of participatory observation, focused group discussions with triangulation procedures. In the paper, eco-friendly fishing methods such as Kumani, Pahata, Mora, Donga, Pelna, Choppa, Mora, Gulel, Bhawarjal, Ditori, Beetaah, Chiwaar, Baahla and Jholna and their working procedures are discussed. Jholna used to catch small and medium sized fishes upto 5-7 kg/day. The production cost of this choppa is less than Rs. 250 and it is used to catch small sized fishes up to 1.5-2.5kg/day. Kumani is used to catch small sized fishes and crabs upto 1-2 kg/day. The making cost of Pelna is around Rs. 650 and it is used to catch fishes upto 6-7 kg/day. The construction cost of Pahata gear is around Rs. 2000 and It is used to catch medium to big sized fishes upto 8-10kg/day
