This article provides an introduction to the study of the transformation of the survival horror genre. The author discusses the genre determinants of horror games from the historical perspective, draw- ing particular attention to the moment when the classic survival horror formula emerged. She also describes the changes over the years that led both to the need to update the genre framework and to the division into classic and post-classic horror games. Narodziny Medium. Gry wideo w polskiej prasie hobbystycznej końca XX wieku

Tematem pracy jest analiza przemian kulturowych sprawiających, że gry wideo zyskały w Polsce status osobnego medium przynależącego do kultury popularnej. Przedmiotem rozprawy jest także analiza kształtowania tożsamości polskiego użytkownika gier. Zjawiska te z największą intensywnością występowały w okresie od drugiej połowy lat 80. XX wieku do końca lat 90. XX wieku, dlatego też istotną funkcję w badaniach pełnią polskie czasopisma hobbystyczne wydawane w tym okresie. Treść tychże magazynów wpływała bowiem na kompetencje nabywane przez graczy, wiedzę o interaktywnym medium a także oczekiwania względem elektronicznej rozrywki. W pierwszym rozdziale przedstawiono metodologię przeprowadzonych badań, korzystając z koncepcji habitusu, pola oraz kapitału kulturowego Pierre’a Bourdieu, a także analiz przeprowadzonych przez Graeme’a Kirkpatricka i Jaakko Suominena, którzy opisali w jaki sposób czasopisma brytyjskie oraz fińskie wpłynęły na formowanie specyficznego dyskursu dotyczącego gier wideo. W kolejnych rozdziałach dysertacji opisano jak polskie czasopisma hobbystyczne realizowały funkcję edukacyjną poprzez publikowanie artykułów na temat korzyści płynących z kontaktu z grami wideo, ale także tekstów poświęconych specyfice medium, dzięki którym czytelnicy zyskiwali kompetencje pozwalające na ewaluację interaktywnych produkcji, stosowanie charakterystycznych pojęć i terminów określających gry oraz umiejscowienie ich wśród wytworów kultury popularnej. Praca została również poświęcona analizie przeobrażeń zachodzących w obrębie kultury graczy w Polsce, które związane były z przełomowymi zjawiskami oraz wydarzeniami, takimi jak transformacja ustrojowa, wprowadzenie ustawy regulującej kwestię praw autorskich czy rozwój usług internetowych w Polsce. Między innymi te procesy w znaczący sposób wpłynęły zarówno na upowszechnienie gier wideo, jak i związane z tym zmiany kulturowe sprawiające, że gracze stali się świadomymi, wymagającymi odbiorcami elektronicznej rozrywki

Analysis of the impact of implemented IT systems on the economic efficiency of enterprises in the construction industry in the context of sustainable development in Poland

PURPOSE: The aim of the article is to analyze the impact of the implemented IT systems on the economic efficiency of construction industry enterprises in Poland.APPROACH/METHODOLOGY/DESIGN: In the framework of the presented article, the main research methods are our own surveys conducted on 300 people (n=300) among employees in various positions in construction companies. This research was supplemented with a review of world scientific literature and an in-depth interview among business practitioners among construction companies in Poland.FINDINGS: The obtained results will indicate the factors that determine the increase in the economic efficiency of enterprises and will enable the formulation of recommendations regarding the optimal implementation of IT systems.PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: The practical implications of the research results contained in the article constitute recommendations for practical actions in the management of construction companies that bring measurable results and increase their economic efficiency.ORIGINALITY/VALUE: The original value of the article is the analysis of primary data obtained as part of a survey of construction enterprises in Poland and the development of recommendations regarding practical actions that increase the economic efficiency of enterprises.The project was financed within the framework of the program of the Minister of Science and Higher Education in Poland under the name “Regional Excellence Initiative” in the years 2019–2023, project number 001/RID/2018/19, the amount of financing PLN 10,684,000.00.peer-reviewe

Relative brain and brain part sizes provide only limited evidence that machiavellian behaviour in cleaner wrasse is cognitively demanding

It is currently widely accepted that the complexity of a species’ social life is a major determinant of its brain complexity, as predicted by the social brain hypothesis. However, it remains a challenge to explain what social complexity exactly is and what the best corresponding measures of brain anatomy are. Absolute and relative size of the brain and of the neocortex have often been used as a proxy to predict cognitive performance. Here, we apply the logic of the social brain hypothesis to marine cleaning mutualism involving the genus Labroides. These wrasses remove ectoparasites from ‘client’ reef fish. Conflict occurs as wrasse prefer client mucus over ectoparasites, where mucus feeding constitutes cheating. As a result of this conflict, cleaner wrasse show remarkable Machiavellian-like behaviour. Using own data as well as available data from the literature, we investigated whether the general brain anatomy of Labroides provides any indication that their Machiavellian behaviour is associated with a more complex brain. Neither data set provided evidence for an increased encephalisation index compared to other wrasse species. Published data on relative sizes of brain parts in 25 species of the order Perciformes suggests that only the diencephalon is relatively enlarged in Labroides dimidiatus. This part contains various nuclei of the social decision making network. In conclusion, gross brain anatomy yields little evidence for the hypothesis that strategic behaviour in cleaning selects for larger brains, while future research should focus on more detailed aspects like the sizes of specific nuclei as well as their cryoarchitectonic structure and connectivity

Psychological determinants of homeschooling

The aim of the study was to analyze the psychological determinants of starting homeschooling by parents towards their school-age children. We analyzed the dependence of this decision on personality traits according to the Big Five, anxiety as a trait, hope trait and factors such as political and religious views or parents’ own school experiences. A comparative analysis has been made with parents whose children attend public primary schools. We used Hope for Success Questionnaire (Łaguna, Trzebiński & Zięba, 2005), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (Wrześniewski, Sosnowski, Jaworowska & Fecenec, 2011), IPIP-BFM-20 Questionnaire (Topolewska, Skimina, Strus, Cieciuch & Rowiński, 2014), questions about homeschooling and demographics. Stronger hope for success, ability to find solutions, willpower, emotional stability and intellect, lower anxiety and conscientiousness were observed in parents undertaking homeschooling compared to parents of school children. A qualitative analysis was also conducted on the declaration of reasons for undertaking homeschooling. The article ends with recommendations for further empirical research.Celem przeprowadzonego badania była analiza psychologicznych uwarunkowań podejmowania edukacji domowej (ED) przez rodziców wobec ich dzieci, znajdujących się w wieku szkolnym. Analizowano zależność podjęcia tej decyzji od cech osobowości wg Wielkiej Piątki, cechy lęku oraz nadziei na sukces i jej składowych, a także od takich czynników, jak światopogląd polityczny i religijny czy własne doświadczenia szkolne rodziców. Przeprowadzono analizę porównawczą z rodzicami, których dzieci uczęszczają do publicznych szkół podstawowych. Zastosowano Kwestionariusz Nadziei na Sukces (Łaguna, Trzebiński i Zięba, 2005), Inwentarz Stanu i Cechy Lęku STAI (Wrześniewski, Sosnowski, Jaworowska i Fecenec, 2011), Kwestionariusz IPIP-BFM-20 (Topolewska, Skimina, Strus, Cieciuch i Rowiński, 2014), pytania dotyczące ED oraz metryczkę. Zaobserwowano silniejszą nadzieję na sukces, umiejętność znajdowania rozwiązań, siłę woli, stabilność emocjonalną i intelekt oraz niższy poziom lęku i sumienności u rodziców podejmujących się ED w porównaniu do rodziców dzieci szkolnych. Przeprowadzono także analizę jakościową dotyczącą deklaracji przyczyn podjęcia się ED. Artykuł zamykają rekomendacje dotyczące dalszych badań empirycznych
