The Effects of Maternity Leave Benefits on Labor Market Outcomes
This paper investigates the effects of maternity leave benefits on the labor market outcomes of mothers with newborn babies in the United States. This paper estimates the effect of maternity leave benefits after controlling for substantial intrinsic differences between maternity leave covered and uncovered workers. The fixed effects estimation method is used to analyze the wage effect. Also, more explanatory variables are added to control for heterogeneity in the analysis of the turnover and employment effects. The results support the hypothesis that maternity leave coverage is beneficial on women's labor market outcomes. Maternity leave significantly lessens turnover one year after' childbirth, and is closely related with more employment outcomes after childbirth. Maternity leave also provides beneficial effect on wage profiles especially through encouraging covered women to work more hours. Maternity leave covered workers have maintained far steeper wage profiles before giving birth than uncovered workers. However, wage premium from maternity leave coverage is not large enough to cancel the negative effects of childbearing. Also, uncovered workers who start new jobs see their wages "rebound" after giving birth. This makes the slope of hourly wage profiles of uncovered workers similar with those of covered workers after giving birth

Micellar colorimetric determination of iron, cobalt, nickel and copper using 1-nitroso-2-naphthol
1-Nitroso-2-naphthol, an excellent color-forming chelating agent, combines to Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and so on to form slightly soluble complexes in aqueous solution. To determine these metal ions, a tedious and time consuming separation technique, such as liquid–liquid extraction, has often been performed. However, these metal-1-nitroso-2-naphthol complexes could be determined conveniently by ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometry in Tween 80 micellar medium that has polyoxyethylene groups. After conditions such as pH, the amount of 1-nitroso-2-naphthol and the stability were adjusted to their optimum values, the sensitivities of the metal ions in Tween 80 medium and in chloroform were compared. It was shown that the sensitivities of Fe(III) and Co(II) in Tween 80 medium were higher than in chloroform, but that of Cu(II) was lower. The interfering effects among analytes ions, Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) were more serious than by other ions, but the interfering effects could be removed by adjusting pH or adding the masking agents such as NH3 or oxalate. Detection limits of Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II), and Cu(II) were 0.024, 0.016, 0.039 and 0.023 μg ml−1, respectively, and the correlation coefficients of these calibration curves were above 0.996. Recovery yields of the metal ions in the mixed standard solution ranged from 96 to 103%, and their coefficients of variation were low ranging between 0.94 and 1.75%. Cu(II) in brass sample and the amount of Fe(III) in steel sample were also determined. This proposed technique is simple, convenient and speedy

Examining the Pre-Test and Interim-Test Effect in Inductive Learning
Recent studies suggest that testing helps learning of materials studied after taking the test. However, it is not yet clearhow testing helps subsequent learning. The current study investigated whether testing benefit was due to test expectancyor adjustment of study strategies by contrasting pre-test and interim-test conditions in addition to the restudy controlcondition. Participants learned the painting styles of various artists that were divided into two sections. Participants hadeither a pre-test, interim-test, or interim-restudy on the first section before proceeding to the second section. On thefinal transfer test, the interim-test group outperformed those from the pre-test and restudy groups, implying that only theinterim-test effect existed, but not the pretesting effect. The result suggests that in inductive learning simply knowingabout the test format in advance of study session does not really help learning, rather it is important for learners to testthemselves after studying

In this paper, we present prototype interactive TV software that incorporates visual content analysis tools and social networking in the home TV. We present the challenges of working with the living room TV environment and outline how we have utilized visual processing and search technologies to address these challenges and create a novel prototype interactive TV system
