Hepatoprotective Effect of Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck Ethanol Extract in Paracetamol-Induced Rats
Based on data from the National Poison Data System of the American Association of Poison Control Center, it is reported that there is a high number of death and liver transplantation due to paracetamol and other combination drugs of paracetamol toxicity. Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck (Sunkist) is a fruit that has been widely studied for its various therapeutic effects. This study aimed to explore the potential of Sunkist peels as a hepatoprotection agent against the toxicity of paracetamol. This was an experimental study conducted in May 2019 at the Pharmacy Biology Laboratory of Pharmacy Faculty, University of North Sumatera on 15 rats that were divided into 5 groups of treatment (negative, positive, and 300, 450, and 600 mg/kgBW Sunkist ethanol extract) and received treatment for 14 days. The AST and ALT was assessed using the dyasis manual assay. Data were then analyzed using one-way ANOVA, followed by Post-hoc test. The results of this study showed that the ALT and AST levels were significantly different (P-value<0.05) between the negative (ALT: 438.73 U/L; AST: 334.37 U/L) group and the positive (ALT: 152.34 U/L; AST: 49.7 U/L). Futhermore, these levels were also significantly different between the negative group and the group that received 600 mg/kg BW of Sunkist peel ethanol extract (ALT: 189.15 U/L; AST: 69.25 U/L). Hence, Sunkist peels have a potential to provide hepatoprotection effects just like catechin rutin.
EFFECT OF GIVING MATOA FRUIT PEEL EXTRACT ON LEVELS OF SUPEROXIDE DISMUTASE (SOD), MALONDIALDEHYDE (MDA) AND HISTOLOGICAL FEATURES OF THE LUNGS OF RATS GIVEN CIGARETTE SMOKE EXPOSURE
The matoa plant (Pometia pinnata) is known as a medicinal plant that has high antioxidant activity. Cigarette smoke produces free radicals and causes oxidative stress, a condition where the number of free radicals in the body exceeds the capacity to neutralize them. The aim of this study was to evaluate the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and histopathological features of rat’s lung exposed to cigarette smoke and matoa peels extract. The research method uses laboratory experimental studies using rats as research subjects. The design used was Randomized Posttest Only with Control Group Design. 24 male white rats of the wistar strain were divided into 6 groups: normal, negative control, positive control, and group I, II, III were given matoa peels extract 3, 6, and 12 mg/kgBW respectively and exposure to cigarette smoke for 14 days. After 14 days, MDA, SOD and histopathological picture of the rats' lungs will be compared based on the group. Data analysis was carried out using a one-way ANOVA test. The results showed that matoa peels extract could reduce MDA levels and increase SOD activity in rats exposed to cigarette smoke (p value <0.05). Group that is given matoa peels extract 12 mg/kgBW can reduce lung tissue damage
Protective Effect of Curcuma zedoria Against Copper in Rats’ White Blood Cell
Copper, an essential trace element, is essential for the human body to maintain homeostatic balance. Higher levels of copper in the human body can cause damage to the liver, kidney, and brain due to increased generation of ROS (reactive oxygen species). As an alternative solution, natural resources which can be used to reduce the impact of copper excess is Curcuma zedoria due to the presence of curcumin. This study was aimed to explore the protective effect of Curcuma zedoria against copper in rats using the WBC as an indicator. This study was performed using 15 rats that were divided into 5 groups consisting of a negative group, a positive group, and three experimental groups which were given ethanol extract of Curcuma zedoria in various dosage. Each group of rats was fed 0.36 mg/kg b.w of CuSO4 solution on the 10th to 14th day of the experiment. The results showed that the level of band neutrophil, lymphocyte, and monocyte increased following the reduction of the dosage of Curcuma Zedoria that given to the rats. However, the levels of monocyte in each group were within normal range except the negative group. Based on the higher levels of WBC, all of the experiment groups suffered chronic active inflammation. Curcuma zedoria had a protective effect against overexposure to copper in rats, but it didn’t completely protect the rats from the effects of overexposure

Effectiveness of bay leaf extract in reducing malondialdehyde levels
Excessive physical activity can lead to oxidative stress, resulting in elevated levels of free radicals in the human body. Oxidative stress is believed to be a precursor of various degenerative and chronic disorders, including arthritis, autoimmune diseases, cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative disorders, inflammatory diseases, and cancer. Malondialdehyde serves as a biomarker for oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation. Hence, the use of antioxidants is imperative to restore the balance in the body. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of bay leaf administration on malondialdehyde levels in male Wistar rats. A pre-test–post-test design with a control group was employed in this study. Bay leaf extract was prepared using a maceration method with 70% ethanol. The rats were divided into four groups, including one control group and three treatment groups based on the dosage. Technical terms were explained when first used, and concise objective language was employed throughout the report. The study adhered to the conventional structure with standard citations and was free from grammatical, spelling, and punctuation errors. Blood samples were collected from the retro orbital plexus on days 1 (pretest) and 15 (posttest). Blood MDA levels were measured using the thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARs) method, which involves reacting blood plasma with 20% TCA, 1% TBA, and 50% glacial acetic acid. To determine the significance of differences between the test groups, one-way ANOVA was used at a 95% confidence level (p < 0.05). Post Hoc Test with LSD technique was conducted for additional analysis or testing. Phytochemical test results indicated the presence of flavonoids, steroids, and tannins as secondary metabolites in the bay leaf extract. Administering bay leaf extract significantly lowered the MDA levels. The group receiving a 5 ml dose demonstrated greater effectiveness in reducing MDA levels in male white Wistar rats induced with excessive physical activity, based on average MDA levels
