    Effect of the Magnetic Prehistory on the Low-Temperature Heat Capacity of the La(Fe0.88Al0.12-xSix)13 Compounds

    The measured heat capacity C of solids is thought in general to involve the change of the internal energy which is a state property. Therefore the electron density of states at the Fermi level is derived from the low-temperature data C=γ T + β T3. The La(Fe0.88Al 0.12-xSix)13 compounds are the antiferromagnets (AFM) TN=200 K with 0<x<0.03 and the ferromagnets (FM) with 0.03<x<0.12 TC=194 K. For x=0.024 and x=0.027 a metamagnetic phase transition from AFM to the field-induced FM (FIFM) occurs in low external magnetic field. The FIFM state of the sample remains if the magnetic field turns off. The measurements of the low-temperature heat capacity in this FIFM state have shown an increase of coefficient γ in comparison with the value both the AFM and the FM. The measured heat capacity depends on a thermodynamic path and thus is not a state property. The change of the work of the magnetostrictive strain of the sample as a part of the low-temperature heat capacity is discussed. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd

    DREB/CBF expression in wheat and barley using the stress-inducible promoters of HD-Zip I genes: impact on plant development, stress tolerance and yield

    Networks of transcription factors regulate diverse physiological processes in plants to ensure that plants respond to abiotic stresses rapidly and efficiently. In this study, expression of two DREB/CBF genes, TaDREB3 and TaCBF5L, was modulated in transgenic wheat and barley, by using stress‐responsive promoters HDZI‐3 and HDZI‐4. The promoters were derived from the durum wheat genes encoding the γ‐clade TFs of the HD‐Zip class I subfamily. The activities of tested promoters were induced by drought and cold in leaves of both transgenic species. Differences in sensitivity of promoters to drought strength were dependent on drought tolerance levels of cultivars used for generation of transgenic lines. Expression of the DREB/CBF genes under both promoters improved drought and frost tolerance of transgenic barley, and frost tolerance of transgenic wheat seedlings. Expression levels of the putative TaCBF5L downstream genes in leaves of transgenic wheat seedlings were up‐regulated under severe drought, and up‐ or down‐regulated under frost, compared to those of control seedlings. The application of TaCBF5L driven by the HDZI‐4 promoter led to the significant increase of the grain yield of transgenic wheat, compared to that of the control wild‐type plants, when severe drought was applied during flowering; although no yield improvements were observed when plants grew under well‐watered conditions or moderate drought. Our findings suggest that the studied HDZI promoters combined with the DREB/CBF factors could be used in transgenic cereal plants for improvement of abiotic stress tolerance, and the reduction of negative influence of transgenes on plant development and grain yields

    Subsurface disorder and electro-optical properties of proton-exchanged LiNbO3 waveguides produced by different techniques

    It has been established, that proton-exchanged LiNbO3 waveguides have a marked subsurface layer with structural disorder inducing degradation of electro-optical properties of these waveguides. At the same time, such a subsurface disorder is found to be less pronounced in soft proton-exchanged (SPE) waveguides in comparison with annealed proton-exchanged (APE) ones. The experimental samples of phase modulators fabricated by SPE technique exhibit a better electro-optical efficiency compared to the LiNbO3 modulators produced by the standard and improved APE techniques

    Influence of Structural Disorder on the Magnetic Order in FeRhCr Alloys

    Magnetic phase transitions in alloys are highly influenced by the sample preparation techniques. In the present research, electronic and magnetic properties of Fe48Cr3Rh49 alloys with varying cooling rates were studied, both experimentally and theoretically. The degree of crystalline ordering was found to depend on the cooling rate employed after annealing the alloy. Modeling of alloy structures with different degrees of crystalline ordering was carried out via strategic selection of substitution positions and distances between chromium atoms. Theoretical calculations revealed significant changes in magnetic and electronic properties of the alloy with different substitutions. A comprehensive analysis of the calculated and experimental data established correlations between structural characteristics and parameters governing the magnetic phase transition. In this study, we also developed a method for evaluating the magnetic properties of the alloys obtained under different heat treatments. The proposed approach integrates atom substitution and heat treatment parameters, offering precise control over alloy manufacturing to effectively tune their essential magnetic properties

    Особенности течения хронической обструктивной болезни легких у больных сахарным диабетом

    Fifty-two patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) aged 44 to 71 yrs were examined. Of them, 26 ones suffered from type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). We established that in patients with concomitant DM, COPD has more severe course with more advanced respiratory failure and chronic cor pulmonale and more frequent exacerbations. COPD patients with concomitant DM more often have co-morbidity, such as obesity, ischemic heart disease, chronic heart failure. Co-morbidity of COLD and DM requires more extensive pharmacotherapy.Обследованы 52 больных хронической обструктивной болезнью легких (ХОБЛ) в возрасте от 44 лет до 71 года. Из них 26 пациентов страдали сахарным диабетом (СД) 2-го типа. Проводилось клинико-инструментальное обследование. Установлено, что на фоне СД ХОБЛ протекает тяжелее: более выражены дыхательная недостаточность и хроническое легочное сердце, чаще возникают обострения. У больных ХОБЛ на фоне СД выявлена высокая частота коморбидных заболеваний: ожирения, ишемической болезни сердца, хронической сердечной недостаточности. Сочетание ХОБЛ и СД требует большего объема фармакотерапии
