Preliminary Investigation into Modeling The Damage to Carbon Fibre Composites Due to the Thermo-electric Effects of a Lightning Strikes
The impact of a lightning strike causes a short high electrical current burst through Carbon Fibre Composites (CFC). Due to the electrical properties of CFC the large current leads to a rapid heating of the surrounding impact area which degrades and damages the CFC. It is therefore necessary to study in detail the thermal response and possible degradation processes caused to CFC. The degradation takes place in two ways, firstly via direct mechanical fracture due to the thermal expansion of the CFC and secondly via thermo-chemical processes (phase change and pyrolysis) at high temperatures. The main objective of this work is to construct a numerical model of the major physical processes involved, and to understand the correlation between the damage mechanisms and the damage witnessed in modern CFC. For this work we are only considering the thermo-chemical degradation of CFC. Bespoke numerical models have been constructed to predict the extent of the damage caused by the two thermo-chemical processes separately (e.g. a model for phase change and a model for pyrolysis). The numerical model predictions have then been verified experimental by decoupling of the damage mechanisms, e.g. the real Joule heating from a lightning strike is replaced by a high power laser beam acting on composite surface. This was done to simplify the physical processes which occur when a sample is damaged. The experimentally damaged samples were then investigated using X-ray tomography to determine the physical extent of the damage. The experimental results are then compared with the numerical predictions by considering the physical extent of the polymer removal. The extent of polymer removal predicted by the numerical model, solving for pyrolysis, gave a reasonable agreement with the damage seen in the experimental sample. Furthermore the numerical model predicts that the damage caused by polymer phase change has a minimal contribution to the overall extent of the damage
Counting cell number in situ by quantification of dimethyl sulphide in culture headspace.
A novel, non-invasive technique is reported for determining the numbers of cells in a culture by quantifying dimethyl sulphide (DMS) in the culture headspace as produced by the cellular enzymatic reduction of dissolved dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO). Measured DMS concentrations, as performed using selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS), in the headspace of 2D and 3D cultures of four cell lines, viz. HEK293 (kidney), MG63 (bone), hepG2 (liver) and CALU-1 (lung), linearly correlate with starting cell number. Clear differences in the rates of production of DMS by the four cell types in both the 2D and 3D situations are seen. This novel analytical technique for cell enumeration offers a significant contribution to quality assessment across cell-based research and industry, including analysis of large scale culture systems, and for routine cell biology research
Constraining the unexplored period between reionization and the dark ages with observations of the global 21 cm signal
Observations of the frequency dependence of the global brightness temperature
of the redshifted 21 cm line of neutral hydrogen may be possible with single
dipole experiments. In this paper, we develop a Fisher matrix formalism for
calculating the sensitivity of such instruments to the 21 cm signal from
reionization and the dark ages. We show that rapid reionization histories with
duration delta z< 2 can be constrained, provided that local foregrounds can be
well modelled by low order polynomials. It is then shown that observations in
the range nu = 50 - 100 MHz can feasibly constrain the Lyman alpha and X-ray
emissivity of the first stars forming at z = 15 - 25, provided that systematic
temperature residuals can be controlled to less than 1 mK. Finally, we
demonstrate the difficulty of detecting the 21 cm signal from the dark ages

Observing Pulsars with a Phased Array Feed at the Parkes Telescope
During February 2016, CSIRO Astronomy and Space Science and the
Max-Planck-Institute for Radio Astronomy installed, commissioned and carried
out science observations with a phased array feed (PAF) receiver system on the
64m diameter Parkes radio telescope. Here we demonstrate that the PAF can be
used for pulsar observations and we highlight some unique capabilities. We
demonstrate that the pulse profiles obtained using the PAF can be calibrated
and that multiple pulsars can be simultaneously observed. Significantly, we
find that an intrinsic polarisation leakage of -31dB can be achieved with a PAF
beam offset from the centre of the field of view. We discuss the possibilities
for using a PAF for future pulsar observations and for searching for fast radio

Measured Sensitivity of the First Mark II Phased Array Feed on an ASKAP Antenna
This paper presents the measured sensitivity of CSIRO's first Mk. II phased
array feed (PAF) on an ASKAP antenna. The Mk. II achieves a minimum
system-temperature-over-efficiency of 78 K at 1.23 GHz
and is 95 K or better from 835 MHz to 1.8 GHz. This PAF was designed for the
Australian SKA Pathfinder telescope to demonstrate fast astronomical surveys

Frequency and causes of kangaroo-vehicle collisions on an Australian outback highway
Kangaroo-vehicle collisions are frequent on Australian highways. Despite high economic costs, detrimental effects on animal welfare, and potential impacts on population viability, little research has been done to investigate the impact of road mortality on kangaroo populations, where and why accidents occur, and how the collisions can be mitigated. We therefore collected data on species (Macropus rufus, M. giganteus, M. fuliginosus, M. robustus), sex and age of kangaroos killed on a 21.2-km bitumenised section of outback highway over 6 months in far western New South Wales, Australia. The spatial and temporal distribution of road-killed kangaroos was investigated in relation to the cover and quality of road-side vegetation, road characteristics, the density of kangaroos along the road, climatic variables and traffic volume. A total of 125 kangaroos were found killed on the road at a rate of 0.03 deaths km-1 day-1. Grey kangaroos of two species (M. giganteus, M. fuliginosus) were under-represented in the road-kill sample in comparison with their proportion in the source population estimated during the day. No bias towards either sex was found. The age structure of road-killed kangaroos was similar to age structures typical of source kangaroo populations. Road-kills mainly occurred in open plains country. In road sections with curves or stock races, road-kill frequencies were higher than expected. Greater cover and greenness of roadside vegetation at the verge probably attracted kangaroos to the road and variation in this vegetation affected the spatial distribution of road-kills. The temporal distribution of road-kills was positively correlated with the volume of night-time traffic. The probability of a kangaroo-vehicle collision increased exponentially with traffic volume. Results are discussed in relation to the potential for mitigation of kangaroo-vehicle collisions. © CSIRO 2006
