Bioluminescence for determining energy state of plants
Bioluminescence produced by the luciferin-luciferase system is a very sensitive assay for ATP content in extracts of plant materials. The ATP test for seed and pollen viability and vigor is presented, along with prediction of high growth potential and productivity in new crosses and selections of breeding materials. ATP as an indicator for environmental quality, stresses, and metabolic regulation is also considered
New Constructions of Zero-Correlation Zone Sequences
In this paper, we propose three classes of systematic approaches for
constructing zero correlation zone (ZCZ) sequence families. In most cases,
these approaches are capable of generating sequence families that achieve the
upper bounds on the family size () and the ZCZ width () for a given
sequence period ().
Our approaches can produce various binary and polyphase ZCZ families with
desired parameters and alphabet size. They also provide additional
tradeoffs amongst the above four system parameters and are less constrained by
the alphabet size. Furthermore, the constructed families have nested-like
property that can be either decomposed or combined to constitute smaller or
larger ZCZ sequence sets. We make detailed comparisons with related works and
present some extended properties. For each approach, we provide examples to

Statistically Preserved Structures and Anomalous Scaling in Turbulent Active Scalar Advection
The anomalous scaling of correlation functions in the turbulent statistics of
active scalars (like temperature in turbulent convection) is understood in
terms of an auxiliary passive scalar which is advected by the same turbulent
velocity field. While the odd-order correlation functions of the active and
passive fields differ, we propose that the even-order correlation functions are
the same to leading order (up to a trivial multiplicative factor). The leading
correlation functions are statistically preserved structures of the passive
scalar decaying problem, and therefore universality of the scaling exponents of

Comparing the Overhead of Topological and Concatenated Quantum Error Correction
This work compares the overhead of quantum error correction with concatenated
and topological quantum error-correcting codes. To perform a numerical
analysis, we use the Quantum Resource Estimator Toolbox (QuRE) that we recently
developed. We use QuRE to estimate the number of qubits, quantum gates, and
amount of time needed to factor a 1024-bit number on several candidate quantum
technologies that differ in their clock speed and reliability. We make several
interesting observations. First, topological quantum error correction requires
fewer resources when physical gate error rates are high, white concatenated
codes have smaller overhead for physical gate error rates below approximately
10E-7. Consequently, we show that different error-correcting codes should be
chosen for two of the studied physical quantum technologies - ion traps and
superconducting qubits. Second, we observe that the composition of the
elementary gate types occurring in a typical logical circuit, a fault-tolerant
circuit protected by the surface code, and a fault-tolerant circuit protected
by a concatenated code all differ. This also suggests that choosing the most
appropriate error correction technique depends on the ability of the future
technology to perform specific gates efficiently
Assessing Sexual Orientation Symptoms In Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Development And Validation Of The Sexual Orientation Obsessions And Reactions Test (SORT)
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) includes many symptom presentations, which creates unique diagnostic challenges. Fears surrounding one’s sexual orientation are common within OCD (also called SO-OCD), but SO-OCD is consistently misdiagnosed by physicians and psychologists. To address this issue, we describe the development of a self-report measure for assessing SO-OCD to help distinguish OCD from distress caused by a sexual orientation identity crisis. The current paper details two studies that established the psychometric properties and clinical utility of this measure. In Study 1, the factor structure, validity, and reliability were examined for the measure’s 12 items in a sample of 1,673 university students. The results revealed a two-factor solution for the measure (Factor 1: Transformation Fears; Factor 2: Somatic Checking) and preliminary evidence of validity and reliability. In Study 2, the measure was tested with LGBTQ and heterosexual community samples and clinical samples of individuals with SO-OCD and other types of OCD. The two-factor solution and evidence of validity and reliability were supported in these samples. Cut-off points were established to distinguish between community members and SO-OCD sufferers, as well as between those experiencing SO-OCD and other types of OCD. Anti-Japan
Although the Japanese empire rapidly dissolved following the end of World War II, the memories, mourning, and trauma of the nation's imperial exploits continue to haunt Korea, China, and Taiwan. In Anti-Japan Leo T. S. Ching traces the complex dynamics that shape persisting negative attitudes toward Japan throughout East Asia. Drawing on a mix of literature, film, testimonies, and popular culture, Ching shows how anti-Japanism stems from the failed efforts at decolonization and reconciliation, the Cold War and the ongoing U.S. military presence, and shifting geopolitical and economic conditions in the region. At the same time, pro-Japan sentiments in Taiwan reveal a Taiwanese desire to recoup that which was lost after the Japanese empire fell. Anti-Japanism, Ching contends, is less about Japan itself than it is about the real and imagined relationships between it and China, Korea, and Taiwan. Advocating for forms of healing that do not depend on state-based diplomacy, Ching suggests that reconciliation requires that Japan acknowledge and take responsibility for its imperial history
