    Coherent Collisions between Bose-Einstein Condensates

    We study the non-degenerate parametric amplifier for matter waves, implemented by colliding two Bose-Einstein condensates. The coherence of the amplified waves is shown by observing high contrast interference with a reference wave and by reversing the amplification process. Since our experiments also place limits on all known sources of decoherence, we infer that relative number squeezing is most likely present between the amplified modes. Finally, we suggest that reversal of the amplification process may be used to detect relative number squeezing without requiring single-particle detection.Comment: 4.2 pages, 4 figures, please take postscript version for best quality of picture

    Large-scale lattice Boltzmann simulations of complex fluids: advances through the advent of computational grids

    During the last two years the RealityGrid project has allowed us to be one of the few scientific groups involved in the development of computational grids. Since smoothly working production grids are not yet available, we have been able to substantially influence the direction of software development and grid deployment within the project. In this paper we review our results from large scale three-dimensional lattice Boltzmann simulations performed over the last two years. We describe how the proactive use of computational steering and advanced job migration and visualization techniques enabled us to do our scientific work more efficiently. The projects reported on in this paper are studies of complex fluid flows under shear or in porous media, as well as large-scale parameter searches, and studies of the self-organisation of liquid cubic mesophases.     Acousto-optic spectrometer for radio astronomy

    A prototype acousto-optic spectrometer which uses a discrete bulk acoustic wave Itek Bragg cell, 5 mW Helium Neon laser, and a 1024 element Reticon charge coupled photodiode array is described. The analog signals from the photodiode array are digitized, added, and stored in a very high speed custom built multiplexer board which allows synchronous detection of weak signals to be performed. The experiment is controlled and the data are displayed and stored with an LSI-2 microcomputer system with dual floppy discs. The performance of the prototype acousto-optic spectrometer obtained from initial tests is reported

    Amortised resource analysis with separation logic

    Type-based amortised resource analysis following Hofmann and Jostā€”where resources are associated with individual elements of data structures and doled out to the programmer under a linear typing disciplineā€”have been successful in providing concrete resource bounds for functional programs, with good support for inference. In this work we translate the idea of amortised resource analysis to imperative languages by embedding a logic of resources, based on Bunched Implications, within Separation Logic. The Separation Logic component allows us to assert the presence and shape of mutable data structures on the heap, while the resource component allows us to state the resources associated with each member of the structure. We present the logic on a small imperative language with procedures and mutable heap, based on Java bytecode. We have formalised the logic within the Coq proof assistant and extracted a certified verification condition generator. We demonstrate the logic on some examples, including proving termination of in-place list reversal on lists with cyclic tails

    Terahertz magneto-spectroscopy of transient plasmas in semiconductors

    Using synchronized near-infrared (NIR) and terahertz (THz) lasers, we have performed picosecond time-resolved THz spectroscopy of transient carriers in semiconductors. Specifically, we measured the temporal evolution of THz transmission and reflectivity after NIR excitation. We systematically investigated transient carrier relaxation in GaAs and InSb with varying NIR intensities and magnetic fields. Using this information, we were able to determine the evolution of the THz absorption to study the dynamics of photocreated carriers. We developed a theory based on a Drude conductivity with time-dependent density and density-dependent scattering lifetime, which successfully reproduced the observed plasma dynamics. Detailed comparison between experimental and theoretical results revealed a linear dependence of the scattering frequency on density, which suggests that electron-electron scattering is the dominant scattering mechanism for determining the scattering time. In InSb, plasma dynamics was dramatically modified by the application of a magnetic field, showing rich magneto-reflection spectra, while GaAs did not show any significant magnetic field dependence. We attribute this to the small effective masses of the carriers in InSb compared to GaAs, which made the plasma, cyclotron, and photon energies all comparable in the density, magnetic field, and wavelength ranges of the current study.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, submitted to Phys.     The variation of spray characteristics along a radial distance downstream of a pressure-swirl atomizer was measured by laser light-scattering technology. An analytical model was developed to predict the variation of spray characteristics along the radial distance. A comparison of the predicted and experimental data showed excellent agreement. Therefore, the spray model proposed, although relatively simple, is correct and can be used, with some expansion and modification of the prepared model, to predict more complicated spray systems

    Higher Order Force Gradient Symplectic Algorithms

    We show that a recently discovered fourth order symplectic algorithm, which requires one evaluation of force gradient in addition to three evaluations of the force, when iterated to higher order, yielded algorithms that are far superior to similarly iterated higher order algorithms based on the standard Forest-Ruth algorithm. We gauge the accuracy of each algorithm by comparing the step-size independent error functions associated with energy conservation and the rotation of the Laplace-Runge-Lenz vector when solving a highly eccentric Kepler problem. For orders 6, 8, 10 and 12, the new algorithms are approximately a factor of 10310^3, 10410^4, 10410^4 and 10510^5 better.Comment: 23 pages, 10 figure
