Snacking in Bed: Blending Residential and Agricultural Typologies
The project will explore the generation of a productive residence in an urban setting. The thesis analyzes the cultural conditions of such a building and how it might fit into the urban fabric of a city. In addition, it will investigate the scaling of such a building and how a plot of land will answer to population density as well as agricultural use. A standardized set of building layers will be clearly defined as a rationale for designing a building that conforms to the site and cultural concerns. The summation of these considerations and intents will be a building that supplies the community with a food-producing building and recreational landscape while als

Synaesthesia is linked to more vivid and detailed content of autobiographical memories and less fading of childhood memories
People with synaesthesia have enhanced memory on a wide range of laboratory tests of episodic memory, but very little is known about their real-world memory. This study used a standard measure of autobiographical remembering (the Autobiographical Memory Questionnaire, AMQ) considering four constructs (Recollection, Belief, Impact and Rehearsal) and two time periods (recent memories from adulthood, remote memories from childhood). Synaesthetes reported more Recollection (e.g. sensory detail) and Belief (e.g. confidence) which interacted with time, such that remote memories are reported to be comparatively better preserved in synaesthetes. This cannot be explained by synaesthetes recalling more salient episodes (the groups did not differ in Impact). It suggests instead that childhood memories have a special status in synaesthesia that reflects the different neurodevelopmental trajectory of this group. With regards to Rehearsal, controls tended to report that more recent memories tend to resurface (i.e. adulthood > childhood), but the synaesthetes showed the opposite dissociation (i.e. childhood > adulthood)
Normative Perception of the Role of IS within the Organization: An Empirical Test of Measuring Student Learning
As we enter the 21st century, the organizational role of IS continues to expand and evolve at a dizzying pace. An understanding of and appreciation for that role is becoming mandatory for all managers and executives, not just IS professionals. This paper first determines a generally agreed upon high-level conceptualization of the strategic role IS plays in organizations. It then proceeds to develop and empirically test an instrument and technique (Structural Equation Modeling, or SEM) designed to measure college students\u27 normative perception of that role. The contributions are twofold. First, the instrument can be used to help evaluate how well future business managers and executives truly understand and recognize the value of IS to the organization. This has long-term implications for organizational productivity. Second, the approach can be used as an indicator of educational quality by assessing the extent to which a concept has crystallized within students (deep learning), as opposed to short-term retention and recall (surface learning). This has implications beyond the study of IS roles

Real and AccrualâBased Earnings Management in the Preâ and PostâIFRS Periods: Evidence from China
The purpose of this study is to investigate the prevalence of both accrualâ and activitiesâbased earnings management for Chinese Aâshare firms surrounding the adoption of substantially IFRSâconvergent accounting standards. Since 2007, all listed Aâshare firms in China have been required to comply with a new set of accounting standards that have substantially conformed to IFRS. The new reform also produced a set of new auditing standards and internal control reporting requirements. Based on a sample of 4,050 firmâyear observations from 2002 to 2011, we find that Chinese firms in the postâIFRS period (2007â2011) are less likely to engage in accrualâbased earnings management. The magnitude of discretionary accruals also declines after IFRS adoption. In response, we see firms turning to real activities manipulation as a substitute for upward earnings management. The reduction in accrualâbased earnings management could stem from higher quality accounting standards associated with IFRS adoption and/or concurrent changes in the governance regimes introduced with the IFRS mandate. A further analysis, however, indicates that the benefits of IFRS adoption in curbing upward accrualâbased earnings manipulation are not evenly distributed across firms. Specifically, the benefit diminishes for firms that are controlled by Chinese central or local governments, are located in less developed regions, and that have weak financial performance and therefore subject to delisting status. We also find that the benefit is less pronounced for manufacturing firms than for their nonâmanufacturing counterparts.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/113776/1/jifm12030.pd
Measuring Student Learning: An Empirical Solution with Implications for IS Education and Beyond
As we enter the twenty-first century, the organizational role of IS continues to expand and evolve at a dizzying pace. An understanding of and appreciation for that role is becoming mandatory for all managers and executives, not just IS professionals. This paper first determines a generally agreed upon high-level conceptualization of the strategic role IS plays in organizations. It then proceeds to develop and empirically test an instrument designed to measure college students' normative perception of that role. The contributions are twofold. First, the instrument can be used as an indicator of educational quality by assessing the extent to which a concept has crystallized within students (deep learning), as opposed to short-term retention and recall (surface learning). This has immediately applicable implications for designing MIS curricula and learning materials and, more widely, in e-Learning in general, where feedback loops allow interaction to be adjusted and refocused in process based on progress toward established goals like, in this case, the recognition of underlying principles. Second, the instrument can be used to help evaluate how well future business managers and executives truly understand and recognize the value of IS to the organization. This has long-term implications for organizational productivity
TOX3 mutations in breast cancer
TOX3 maps to 16q12, a region commonly lost in breast cancers and recently implicated in the risk of developing breast cancer. However, not much is known of the role of TOX3 itself in breast cancer biology. This is the first study to determine the importance of TOX3 mutations in breast cancers. We screened TOX3 for mutations in 133 breast tumours and identified four mutations (three missense, one in-frame deletion of 30 base pairs) in six primary tumours, corresponding to an overall mutation frequency of 4.5%. One potentially deleterious missense mutation in exon 3 (Leu129Phe) was identified in one tumour (genomic DNA and cDNA). Whilst copy number changes of 16q12 are common in breast cancer, our data show that mutations of TOX3 are present at low frequency in tumours. Our results support that TOX3 should be further investigated to elucidate its role in breast cancer biology.Breast Cancer Research Foundation grant; University of Cambridge; Cancer Research UK; Hutchison Whampoa Limited; NIHR Cambridge Biomedical Research Centre; Marie Curie Career Integration Grant; Cancer Research UK [16942]; National Institute for Health Research [NF-SI-0611-10154
The role of physiological and subjective measures of emotion regulation in predicting adolescent wellbeing
Emotion regulation (ER) is a key contributor to psychosocial adjustment in adolescence, while ER deficits contribute to psychological distress and dysfunction. To date, research with adolescents has examined a limited subset of ER processes, often in relation to mental ill-health. This study examined associations between multiple ER measures and wellbeing in a normative sample of 119 adolescents (Mage = 15.73). ER was measured using self-report and physiological (RSA) indices. Multiple measures of positive and negative functioning were examined. After controlling for covariates, hierarchical regression analyses revealed that self-reported ER predicted resilience, perseverance, connectedness, and happiness; and fewer depression and anxiety symptoms. Higher tonic RSA predicted resilience and perseverance. Effect sizes were small to moderate. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed
Does regular walking improve lipid levels in adults?
Q: Evidence-based answer: Minimally. Regular moderateintensity walking for a period of 4 or more weeks minimally decreased total cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels by about 7 mg/dL in women with overweight or obesity (strength of recommendation [SOR]: C, systematic review and meta-analysis on disease-oriented evidence). For adults ages 40 to 65 years, regular walking for 3 or more months inconsistently affected cholesterol and triglyceride levels (SOR: C, based on 3 randomized controlled trials [RCTs] with disease-oriented evidence).Kayla Hatchell, MD; Emily Chin, DO; Brian Vukelic, MD; Katherine Fortenberry, PhD; Dominick Ose, DrPH; Eliza Taylor, MPH, BS, CHES; Rachel Goossen, MD (University of Utah), Rick Guthmann, MD, MPH (Advocate Health Care Illinois Masonic Medical Center Program)Includes bibliographical reference

A meta-analysis of memory ability in synaesthesia
People with synaesthesia have often been reported to possess enhanced memory relative to the general population and, in some cases, exceptional memory ability. However, there are also inconsistencies in this literature and it is unclear whether this reflects sampling error (exacerbated by low Ns) or more meaningful differences that arise because synaesthesia relates to some aspects of memory more than others. To this end, a multi-level meta-analysis was conducted. Synaesthetes have enhanced episodic memory with a medium population effect size estimate (d Ì = 0.61), whereas the effects on working memory were significantly smaller (d Ì = 0.36) but still exceeded that of controls. Moderation analyses suggested that, aside from the division between long term versus working memory, the effects of synaesthesia are pervasive i.e. they extend to all kinds of stimuli, and extend to all kinds of test formats. This pattern is hard to reconcile with the view that synaesthetic experiences directly support memory ability: for instance, digit span (where synaesthesia could be helpful) showed a small effect whereas episodic memory for abstract images (where synaesthesia is irrelevant) yielded larger effects. Synaesthesia may be the only known neurodevelopmental condition linked to a pervasive enhancement of long-term memory
