    The Visionary Use of Hypotyposis in the Tragedies of Nicolas Caussin

    The article aims at examining the specific use of the hypotyposis in the five latin tragedies of Nicolas Caussin, a French Jesuit priest of the 17th century. As a professor of rhetoric, he wrote a treaty of rhetoric, Eloquentiae sacrae et humanae parallela, in which are emphasized various techniques of description such as hypotyposis, following the principle of the Society of Jesus whose educational activities relied upon persuasive images. In the tragedies of Caussin, the hypotyposis is privileged to such an extent that it is used to describe not only what will happen later on the stage but also what happens in the spiritual world. The hypotyposis therefore plays an educational role which consists in imagining what lies beyond the visible. And it is the christianized vision of the “theater of the world” that provides the base for this visionary use of hypotyposis: the drama represents in a symbolic way the blindness of humans who are not aware that God observes them.Il s’agira ici d’examiner la spĂ©cificitĂ© de l’hypotypose mise en Ɠuvre dans les cinq tragĂ©dies latines de Nicolas Caussin, jĂ©suite français du XVIIe siĂšcle.     State-of-the-art transforaminal percutaneous endoscopic lumbar surgery under local anesthesia : Discectomy, foraminoplasty, and ventral facetectomy

    Transforaminal (TF) percutaneous endoscopic surgery for the lumbar spine under the local anesthesia was initiated in 2003 in Japan. Since it requires only an 8-mm skin incision and damage of the paravertebral muscles would be minimum, it would be the least invasive spinal surgery at present. At the beginning, the technique was used for discectomy; thus, the procedure was called PELD (percutaneous endoscopic lumbar discectomy). TF approach can be done under the local anesthesia, there are great benefits. During the surgery patients would be in awake and aware condition; thus, severe nerve root damage can be avoided. Furthermore, the procedure is possible for the elderly patients with poor general condition, which does not allow the general anesthesia. Historically, the technique was first applied for the herniated nucleus pulposus. Then, foraminoplasty, which is the enlargement surgery of the narrow foramen, became possible thanks to the development of the high speed drill. It was called the percutaneous endoscopic lumbar foraminoplasty (PELF). More recently, this technique was applied to decompress the lateral recess stenosis, and the technique was named percutaneous endoscopic ventral facetectomy (PEVF).     Development of Atmospheric Monitoring System at Akeno Observatory for the Telescope Array Project

    We have developed an atmospheric monitoring system for the Telescope Array experiment at Akeno Observatory. It consists of a Nd:YAG laser with an alt-azimuth shooting system and a small light receiver. This system is installed inside an air conditioned weather-proof dome. All parts, including the dome, laser, shooter, receiver, and optical devices are fully controlled by a personal computer utilizing the Linux operating system. It is now operated as a back-scattering LIDAR System. For the Telescope Array experiment, to estimate energy reliably and to obtain the correct shower development profile, the light transmittance in the atmosphere needs to be calibrated with high accuracy. Based on observational results using this monitoring system, we consider this LIDAR to be a very powerful technique for Telescope Array experiments.     Successful treatment of intractable pseudomeningocele with FXIII deficiency by surgery and FXIII replacement therapy : A case report

    Pseudomeningocele is an extradural cystic collection of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and is rare and typically asymptomatic. However, pseudomeningocele is sometimes associated with symptoms. Whether symptomatic pseudomeningocele is best treated conservatively or surgically remains controversial. Factor XIII (FXIII) is a blood coagulation factor that also promotes fibroblast proliferation during wound healing. Although treatment of postsurgical CSF leakage with FXIII has been reported, there have been no reports on surgical treatment and FXIII replacement therapy of pseudomeningocele with FXIII deficiency. We report a case of pseudomeningocele with FXIII deficiency that was successfully treated by surgery and FXIII replacement therapy. The patient presented with symptoms of intracranial hypotension syndrome that had started a few months after laminectomy for thoracic ossification of the ligamentum flavum 2 years earlier. Magnetic resonance imaging and delayed computed tomography myelography confirmed a diagnosis of pseudomeningocele. Epidural blood patch treatment was performed twice but did not result in improvement. Furthermore, the FXIII level decreased to 56%, so the patient was also diagnosed as having acquired FXIII deficiency. We elected to treat the patient by surgery with FXIII replacement therapy. The dural injury was repaired using an artificial dura mater patch, fibrin glue, and polyglycolic acid sheets. The FXIII level was 74%–135% during the perioperative period. The patient had a good postoperative course. Postoperative magnetic resonance images showed resolution of the pseudomeningocele. There was no recurrence during 6 months of follow-up. Perioperative FXIII replacement may be a useful treatment for pseudomeningocele with FXIII deficiency

    Trace Elements in Hair: Relevance to Air Pollution

    Elemental concentrations of single hair samples taken from 2003 to 2012 had been evaluated by X-ray fluorescence for the assessment of the relation between calcium and cancer. Early results implied a mechanism linking hair and serum element concentrations with a shift in element levels over time. After 2009, pollution-attributable differences were seen in the levels of Ca, Sr, P, Cl, Br, K, S, elements under renal control by parathyroid hormone (PTH), as well as Cu, Zn, Ti. Especially, hair taken from February to March 2011 showed low [Cu] and [Zn] indicating about half of the normal serum level and often three orders of magnitude higher [Ti] than typical. These specimens also showed higher serum [S] than usual, and except for one patient with PTH-related disease, all the subjects had the normal or lower hair calcium than typical for earlier years. Almost all the subjects showed store-operated Ca channel gating. The pollution era is associated with an increase in hair Na, a decrease in K, and abnormally low P, suggesting a functional deterioration of Na+/K+-ATPase. These results can be attributed to increases in serum Ca and S coincident with breathing the polluted air; the incorporated Ca closes the ion channels of hair matrix cells but may be moved with P to bone, resulting in the abnormal P deficiency, likely producing an ATP shortage in serum. This insufficient ATP supply may result in inactivated molecular pumps and hypokalemia contributing to fatal ventricular fibrillation in patients with myocardial infarction. The pollution increase [S] in serum may be excreted by forming sulfide compounds with Cu and Zn, resulting in Cu deficiency necessary for making elastin to repair damage in blood vessels. The K and Cu deficiencies observed appear to account for the reported increase in infarction mortality after high-pollution days

    C6 radiculopathy with winged scapula

    A 73-year-old woman complained of right medial side of scapular pain associated with winged scapula to miss without observing the back in minute detail. Additional treatment was required due to overlooking caused by insufficient examination. We performed micro-endoscopic foraminotomy that provided the disappearance of scapular pain and improvement of winged scapula in relatively early. It was commonly said that winged scapula is an extremely rare condition that causes dysfunction of the upper extremities. We suggest that there are the meaning of winged scapula in diagnosis and the importance of physical examination. Further studies should be required to research the morbidity of winged scapula associated with cervical disease. By sharing our experience of this attention arousing case, we provide information not to repeat the same mistakes

    Arrival direction of successive air showers

    We have studied the features of series of air shower events (AS cluster) concentrated within short intervals of time of arrival. When the number of events in the cluster reaches the maximum values in the considered data set, the arrival directions of the AS are prevailingly observed around values of right ascension α 5 h and α 20 h. These values indicate parallellism of directions between the shower directions and the galactic plane. This can be explained by the presence of Ultra-High Energy (UHE) gamma-ray sources, generating showers from their specific direction. The analysis uses three data set of 253k, 664k and 231k events.     Effect of O-arm for spinal injury

    Purpose : To compare the effectiveness of O-arm navigation with that of conventional fluoroscopic guidance in corrective posterior fixation for cervical spinal injury. Methods : This retrospective comparative study involved 11 consecutive patients who underwent corrective posterior fixation using O-arm navigation or conventional fluoroscopy for cervical spinal injury between February 2016 and May 2021. Patient-specific characteristics (age and sex), number of screws, number of pedicle screws, accuracy of pedicle screw insertion, number of vertebral bodies fixed, operating time, and length of hospital stay were analyzed using the t-test. A P-value 0.05). Conclusion : O-arm navigation can improve the accuracy of cervical pedicle screw insertion. Its introduction could expand the indications for use of pedicle screws in posterior fixation of cervical spinal injury beyond those that are possible using conventional fluoroscopy

    The Optical System for the Large Size Telescope of the Cherenkov Telescope Array

    The Large Size Telescope (LST) of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is designed to achieve a threshold energy of 20 GeV. The LST optics is composed of one parabolic primary mirror 23 m in diameter and 28 m focal length. The reflector dish is segmented in 198 hexagonal, 1.51 m flat to flat mirrors. The total effective reflective area, taking into account the shadow of the mechanical structure, is about 368 m2^2. The mirrors have a sandwich structure consisting of a glass sheet of 2.7 mm thickness, aluminum honeycomb of 60 mm thickness, and another glass sheet on the rear, and have a total weight about 47 kg. The mirror surface is produced using a sputtering deposition technique to apply a 5-layer coating, and the mirrors reach a reflectivity of ∌\sim94% at peak. The mirror facets are actively aligned during operations by an active mirror control system, using actuators, CMOS cameras and a reference laser. Each mirror facet carries a CMOS camera, which measures the position of the light spot of the optical axis reference laser on the target of the telescope camera.
