This study focused on attitude of library and information science students towards electronic information resources in selected university libraries in Rivers State. The design adopted for the study is descriptive survey. The population of the study consists of the registered regular library and information science undergraduate students of the selected university libraries. The study was made up of 325 registered undergraduate students of Library and Information Science department in University of Port Harcourt; 314 registered undergraduate students of Library and Information Science department in Rivers State University and 229 registered Library and Information Science Undergraduate student of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education making it a total of 868 LIS undergraduate students in all. The sample size consists of a total of three hundred and forty-seven (348) students. 40% was used to select the subjects that formed the sample that is 130 for UNIPORT; 126 for RSU and 92 for IAUE. The proportionate random sampling technique was adopted for the study. A structured questionnaire was used for the study. The research questionnaire was administered to the undergraduate students of library and information science of the universities under study. The data was collated and analyzed using mean and real limits of numbers for ranking. The findings of the study showed that the attitude of library and information science students in University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State University and Ignatius Ajuru University of Education has an influence on their perception and the frequency of utilization of electronic information resources. This has resulted to low performance due to non-use of electronic resources and lack of skills. The study recommended that the university library should establish adequate e-library facilities for the students’ use. This can be achieved by getting financial aid or provision of those electronic information resources from the university administration or other private organization who are interested for the cours

Lived experience in patients with recurrent glioblastoma in Japan: A narrative study

Glioblastoma (GBM) is well known to have one of the poorest prognoses among all cancers. Patients with GBM in progression-free survival (PFS) may be relatively stable and can often maintain their quality of life. Thus, PFS is a desirable goal. In Japan, the median PFS is 11 months. It is difficult to grasp a patient\u27s thoughts and hopes when, after PFS, they are readmitted due to recurrence or acute deterioration. Therefore, this study aimed to describe the lived experience of illness in patients with recurrent GBM, focusing on PFS. We enrolled five patients into the study; however, only four patients completed data collection. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews. We also conducted a thematic narrative analysis. As a result, we generated one overall theme: Even in vulnerable and constrained daily lives, the aim was gaining a sense of stability—and maintaining it steadily—as far as possible, on their own. That sense of stability is fragile so that maintaining equilibrium is a precarious enterprise. Moreover, in PFS, participants were trying to maintain equilibrium by reevaluating themselves and sometimes giving up something, although they received support from people around them. We infer that it is important for nurses to assess and understand the fluctuations in that sense of stability through continuous involvement with patients. An interdisciplinary approach and lateral integration of care are important to meet the needs of GBM patients. This understanding will lead to nursing supports that help patients live with stability, pride, and dignity

Definition and recommended cultural considerations for advance care planning in Japan: A systematic review

    Get PDF
Although Delphi studies in Western countries have provided a consensus for practices pertaining to advance care planning (ACP), their findings may not be applicable to Asian countries with distinct, family-oriented cultures. This systematic review aimed to synthesize the definitions of and evidence for ACP and analyze recommended practices in Japan. We conducted a systematic review using narrative synthesis in December 2018. Key words were searched from Ichushi-Web by NPO Japan Medical Abstracts Society, Citation Information by the National Institute of Informatics, and Japanese Institutional Repositories Online databases. In addition, in August 2019, we conducted hand searching using Google Scholar and Google. We included original Japanese articles that addressed factors regarding ACP (e.g. definitions, elements, roles and tasks, and timing of ACP). Data were synthesized using thematic analysis. The study protocol was registered prospectively (PROSPERO: CRD42020152391). Of the 3512 studies screened, 27 were included: 22 quantitative and 5 qualitative. Five-position statements/guidelines were added by hand searching. Definitions and several distinct practice patterns of ACP and the importance of families' roles were identified. Unique recommendations addressed the importance of properly eliciting patients' preferences that are the best for both patients and families, engaging the public to raise awareness of ACP, and developing policies and guidelines for ACP. We identified the definition of and unique recommendations for ACP based on Japanese cultural values and norms. Further research is needed to evaluate the recommendations provided in this systematic review

The KCAL VERA 22 GHz calibrator survey

We observed at 22 GHz with the VLBI array VERA a sample of 1536 sources with correlated flux densities brighter than 200 mJy at 8 GHz. One half of target sources has been detected. The detection limit was around 200 mJy. We derived the correlated flux densities of 877 detected sources in three ranges of projected baseline lengths. The objective of these observations was to determine the suitability of given sources as phase calibrators for dual-beam and phase-referencing observations at high frequencies. Preliminary results indicate that the number of compact extragalactic sources at 22 GHz brighter than a given correlated flux density level is twice less than at 8 GHz.Comment: Accepted for publication by the Astronomical Journal. 6 pages, 3 figures, 3 table. Higher education has jumped into the quality movement with expectations of enhancing the excellence of education being received by students.  Higher education institutions are becoming a business while knowledge is becoming the commodity, with all aspects of education subject to global trade.  There is a need for education to become more efficient, self-sufficient, and accountable.  Neo-liberalism reduces governmental subsidies, while shifting costs to the market and consumers.  Furthermore, it demands accountability for performance, and emphasize higher education’s role in the economy.  The injection of accountability and accreditation into the educational system is necessary for a quality global educational system.  This paper looks at the development of national accreditation within the United States, Vietnam, and Japan.  Developing an understanding of the accreditation process will contribute to the literature surrounding accreditation and quality assurance
