    The Dynamics of Hope in Unkrich and Molina’s Coco

    This study analyzes how the characters in Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina’s animated film Coco, mainly MamĂĄ Imelda, HĂ©ctor, and Miguel, manage their emotional responses when they are facing loss, bereavement, or other significant changes in their lives. The study uses Elisabeth KĂŒbler-Ross’s five-stage model of grief to analyze how these characters go through the grieving process. Moreover, in order to suggest how those who are grieving can enter into positive states of mind, the study expands on KĂŒbler-Ross’s original model by incorporating a positive mindset of hope. In dialogue with Unkrich and Molina’s film, the study uses KĂŒbler-Ross’s ideas to explore coping mechanisms that can help manage difficult times in life, while also suggesting the benefits of maintaining a positive mindset through hope

    Porocarcinoma in situ showing follicular differentiation: A case report

    AbstractPoroid neoplasm is a skin appendage tumor that has both benign and malignant counterparts. It has traditionally been regarded as of eccrine origin and has four types: intraepidermal poroma (hidroacanthoma simplex), poroma, dermal duct tumor, and poroid hidradenoma. Here we describe the case of a 64-year-old woman who had a verrucous, erythematous to brownish tumor on her left buttock for many years. Histopathology revealed an intra-epidermal poroid tumor with both benign and malignant parts. The benign part had intra-epidermal nests of poroid cells, which were smaller, monomorphic and sharply marginated from adjacent keratinocytes. The malignant part showed similar cell types, but had a higher nuclear/cytoplasmic ratio, pleomorphism, and prominent mitoses. Ductal structures were noted in neoplastic cells and an epithelial membrane antigen stain was strongly positive. Interestingly, peripheral palisading and primitive follicular germ formation were also observed in the neoplasm, which suggests follicular differentiation. We made a final diagnosis of porocarcinoma in situ with follicular differentiation, which may support the folliculosebaceous–apocrine unit theory, but a tumor with such a combination has not been described before

    A Microcantilever-based Gas Flow Sensor for Flow Rate and Direction Detection

    The purpose of this paper is to apply characteristics of residual stress that causes cantilever beams to bend for manufacturing a micro-structured gas flow sensor. This study uses a silicon wafer deposited silicon nitride layers, reassembled the gas flow sensor with four cantilever beams that perpendicular to each other and manufactured piezoresistive structure on each micro-cantilever by MEMS technologies, respectively. When the cantilever beams are formed after etching the silicon wafer, it bends up a little due to the released residual stress induced in the previous fabrication process. As air flows through the sensor upstream and downstream beam deformation was made, thus the airflow direction can be determined through comparing the resistance variation between different cantilever beams.     An Econometric Analysis of ETF and ETF Futures in Financial and Energy Markets Using Generated Regressors

    It is well known that that there is an intrinsic link between the financial and energy sectors, which can be analyzed through their spillover effects, which are measures of how the shocks to returns in different assets affect each other’s subsequent volatility in both spot and futures markets. Financial derivatives, which are not only highly representative of the underlying indices but can also be traded on both the spot and futures markets, include Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs), which is a tradable spot index whose aim is to replicate the return of an underlying benchmark index. When ETF futures are not available to examine spillover effects, “generated regressors” may be used to construct both Financial ETF futures and Energy ETF futures. The purpose of the paper is to investigate the co-volatility spillovers within and across the US energy and financial sectors in both spot and futures markets, by using “generated regressors” and a multivariate conditional volatility model, namely Diagonal BEKK. The daily data used are from 1998/12/23 to 2016/4/22. The data set is analyzed in its entirety, and also subdivided into three subset time periods. The empirical results show there is a significant relationship between the Financial ETF and Energy ETF in the spot and futures markets. Therefore, financial and energy ETFs are suitable for constructing a financial portfolio from an optimal risk management perspective, and also for dynamic hedging purposes

    Emotion and Concentration Integrated System: Applied to the Detection and Analysis of Consumer Preference

    With the expansion of consumer market, the appearance becomes an important issue when consumers make decisions under the situation of similar qualities and contents. Accordingly, to attract consumers, companies cost and take much attention on product appearance. Compared to using questionnaires individually, obtaining humans’ thoughts directly from their brains can accurately grasp the actual preference of consumers, which can provide effective and precious decisions for companies. \ In this study, consumers’ brainwaves which are related to concentration and emotion are extracted by wearing a portable and wireless Electroencephalography (EEG) device. The extracted EEG data are then trained by using perceptron learning algorithm (PLA) to make the judgments of concentration and emotion work well with each subject. They are then applied to the detection and analysis of consumer preference. Finally, the questionnaires are also performed and used as the reference on training process. They are integrated with brainwaves data to create one prediction model which can improve the accuracy significantly. The Partial Least Squares is used to compare the correlation between different factors in the model, to ensure the test can accurately meet consumers’ thoughts

    Multimodal Social Skills, Communication and Behavioral Intervention for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: Comparison of Multiple Indices for Treatment Effectiveness

    The study aimed to investigate the treatment effectiveness of evidence-based intervention program called Multimodal Social Skills, Communication and Behavioral (MSSCB) program. 34 participants with the diagnosis of high-functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) aged between 3 to 12 year-old were recruited  (F=9, M=25Mean age =8.03, SD=2.14) at the beginning. The study collected and analyzed the data of participants’ socio-demographic characteristics as well as their psychometric outcomes measuring their cognitive, social, communication, behavioral, emotional, and other adaptive function. We used t-test and SPSS to analyze the data that were obtained at the beginning and at the time six months later on. The mean of the scores from the social domain of parents’ ASD screening questionnaires declined significantly (t=-2.15, p<0.05, α = .05). The means of the standardized scores in overall performance, communication domain, and social domains of Vinland’s Adaptive Rating Scale (Interview Version) elevated significantly (t=3.40, 3.69, & 2.35 respectively, P<0.01, α = .05). Additional significant improvements were noticed in the scores of syndrome scales of withdrawn/depressed, social problems, and aggressive behavior reported by parents and the scores of the externalized problem scale and syndrome scale of rule-breaking behavior reported by teachers (p-value ranged from 0.004 to 0.050, α = .05).   The present study implies that MSSCB program might be effective for children with high-functioning ASD detected by several psychometric measurements. Nevertheless, not all indices consistently and significantly supported benefits of the program. Further discussion and suggestions were made for the establishment and examination of an evidence-based intervention program for children with AS

    Coexistence of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) with asthma appears to impair asthma control. Type-2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) respond to the cytokines of thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP), interleukin (IL)-25 and IL-33, thus contributing to airway diseases such as CRS and asthma. We investigate whether the augmented Th2-cytokines in CRS might be related to sinonasal tract ILC2s corresponding to enhanced IL-25, IL-33 and TSLP release in severe asthmatics, and be involved in asthma control. Twenty-eight asthmatics (12 non-severe and 16 severe) with CRS receiving nasal surgery were enrolled. The predicted FEV1 inversely associated with CRS severity of CT or endoscopy scores. Higher expression of Th2-driven cytokines (IL-4, IL-5, IL-9, and IL-13), TSLP, IL-25 and IL-33 in nasal tissues was observed in severe asthma. Severe asthmatics had higher ILC2 cell counts in their nasal tissues. ILC2 counts were positively correlated with Th2-cytokines. Nasal surgery significantly improved asthma control and lung function decline in severe asthma and CRS. The higher expression of IL-33/ILC2 axis-directed type 2 immune responses in nasal tissue of CRS brought the greater decline of lung function in severe asthma. ILC2-induced the upregulated activity of Th2-related cytokines in asthmatics with CRS may contribute to a recalcitrant status of asthma control
