Helicity Asymmetry in gamma p -> pi+ n with FROST

The main objective of the FROST experiment at Jefferson Lab is the study of baryon resonances. The polarization observable E for the reaction gamma p to pi+n has been measured as part of this program. A circularly polarized tagged photon beam with energies from 0.35 to 2.35 GeV was incident on a longitudinally polarized frozen-spin butanol target. The final-state pions were detected with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer. Preliminary polarization data agree fairly well with present SAID and MAID partial-wave analyses at low photon energies. In most of the covered energy range, however, significant deviations are observed. These discrepancies underline the crucial importance of polarization observables to further constrain these analyses.Comment: Contribution to the Proceedings of NSTAR 2011 - The 8th International Workshop on the Physics of Excited Nucleons, May 17-20, 2011, Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, Newport News, Virginia US

This research aimed to: - (1) design an agriculture-based circular economy between safe rice production process and production of grey oyster mushroom; and (2) develop public policy at local level in the context of a community agriculture-based circular economy. Using a case study of Ban Cham Pa, Moo 10, Chiang Yuen Subdistrict, Mueang Udon Thani District, Udon Thani Province, this research employed multi-stage developmental research design. Data collection comprised interview, focus group, observation, and survey, using semi-structured interview questions. The collected data then was analyzed with the application of SWOT and TOWS analyses. The results revealed a circular economy design between rice production and production of grey oyster mushroom. Recycling of agricultural wastes, particularly, contributed to reduced expenses and strengthened self-dependency with in the community. Furthermore, thedeveloped publicpolicy was planned to comprise 4 phases—i.e. (1) strengthening community occupational groups; (2) creating innovation of community agriculture-based circular economy; (3) forging collaborative, integrated networks and partners with agencies and organizations external to the community; and (4) amplifying results to an innovation prototype of agriculture-based circular economy. Recommendation included experimenting with development of circular economy on other groups of agriculturists to confirm its performance, as well as to establish holistic agriculture-based circular economy within the community

    Ringtone Regardless of P-Early-Media Tag

    Get PDF
A user device placing a mobile originating call on a network using Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) ignores P-Early-Media tags and session description protocol (SDP) in Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) packets received from the network after receiving a 180 Ringing alert packet indicating that the receiving device is ringing to minimize a delay in playing a ringback tone. The user device plays a local ringtone until the user device receives audio RTP packets containing Early Media. If the user device receives audio RTP packets containing Early Media before the call is connected, the user device plays the Early Media as a custom ringtone

Nutrient deficiencies affecting peanut production in soils of northeast Thailand

    Get PDF
Peanut is widely grown in the rainy season on upland soils (mostly Paleustults) in northeast Thailand. The nutrient status of these soils for peanut production has not been adequately assessed. Response to phosphorus, potassium, sulfur, and copper on a range of soil types of this region have been obtained in pot trials using pasture legumes (Wilaipon 1976). The present experiments were set up to identify nutrient deficiencies which could limit yield and kernel quality of peanut on an Oxic Paleustult (Khorat series)

Thai Food in Taiwan: Tracing the Contours of Transnational Taste

    Get PDF
This essay examines the recent proliferation of Thai restaurants in Taiwan, relating their development to different streams of transnational migration from Thailand, Myanmar and mainland China. Thai restaurants in Taiwan take many forms from low-cost 'ethnic' restaurants around the Taoyuan train station and in more peripheral areas, catering mainly to migrant workers from Thailand, to upmarket restaurants in city centre locations, catering to a 'cosmopolitan' clientele with high levels of economic and cultural capital. The paper traces the contours of transnational taste in Taiwan where Thai food has been adapted to suit local demand. In this context, as elsewhere, notions of culinary authenticity are contested, revolving around specific ingredients, recipes and dishes as well as notions of provenance, décor and other aspects of material culture. The paper examines the process of authentication, focusing on the culinary claims made by differently-located stakeholders. It also considers the material as well as the symbolic construction of 'taste', a term whose multiple meanings provide a valuable way of rethinking transnationality. As well as providing a case study of the evolution of culinary culture in a non-Western context, the paper sheds light on the role of food in defining Taiwan's contemporary political culture through notions of cosmopolitanism and modernity

Association between Frequency Domain Heart Rate Variability and Unplanned Readmission to Hospital in Geriatric Patients

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>An accurate prediction of unplanned readmission (UR) after discharge from hospital can facilitate physician's decision making processes for providing better quality of care in geriatric patients. The objective of this study was to explore the association of cardiac autonomic functions as measured by frequency domain heart rate variability (HRV) and 14-day UR in geriatric patients.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Patients admitted to the geriatric ward of a regional hospital in Chiayi county in Taiwan were followed prospectively from July 2006 to June 2007. Those with invasive tubes and those who were heavy smokers, heavy alcohol drinkers, on medications that might influence HRV, or previously admitted to the hospital within 30 days were excluded. Cardiac autonomic functions were evaluated by frequency domain indices of HRV. Multiple logistic regression was used to assess the association between UR and HRV indices adjusted for age and length of hospitalization.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A total of 78 patients met the inclusion criteria and 15 of them were readmitted within 14 days after discharge. The risk of UR was significantly higher in patients with lower levels of total power (OR = 1.39; 95% CI = 1.04-2.00), low frequency power (LF) (OR = 1.22; 95% CI = 1.03-1.49), high frequency power (HF) (OR = 1.27; 95% CI = 1.02-1.64), and lower ratios of low frequency power to high frequency power (LF/HF ratio) (OR = 1.96; 95% CI = 1.07-3.84).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This is the first study to evaluate the association between frequency domain heart rate variability and the risk of UR in geriatric patients. Frequency domain heart rate variability indices measured on admission were significantly associated with increased risk of UR in geriatric patients. Additional studies are required to confirm the value and feasibility of using HRV indices on admission as a non-invasive tool to assist the prediction of UR in geriatric patients.</p

The Impact of U.S. Trade Law on Government Policy Making in the Republic of China

Since President Reagan signed the Omnibus Trade Act on August 23, 1988, the U.S. government has completed a series of investigations according to the provisions of the Act. Consultations aimed at forcing its trading partners to adjust their trade- policies which are regarded as unfair to U.S. trade have also been held in the past ten months or so. Being one of the most important trading partners of the U.S. – both in terms of its overall trade volume and its surplus with the U.S. – the Republic of China on Taiwan (ROC) seems to have become a target of retaliatory measures implied in the Act. During the period from August of last year to this date, the U.S. has consulted intensively with the ROC on various trade issues. The possible implementation of the Trade Act seemed to have been implied throughout most of the talks. Therefore, the results of consultations often had an impact on the trade policy of the ROC. On the other hand, the adjustments that the ROC has made to cope with the new environment of the world economy have also been instrumental in formulating the ROC\u27s new trade policy. All in all, the ROC\u27s trade policy has been transformed, over the past twenty-five years, from an export-oriented one to the present one which encourages imports with a view toward balancing the two-way trade. In order to carry out this policy, the ROC has adopted a series of measures not only to expedite the liberalization of its market, but also to increase its purchases from the U.S
