    Phase-sensitive quantum effects in Andreev conductance of the SNS system of metals with macroscopic phase breaking length

    The dissipative component of electron transport through the doubly connected SNS Andreev interferometer indium (S)-aluminium (N)-indium (S) has been studied. Within helium temperature range, the conductance of the individual sections of the interferometer exhibits phase-sensitive oscillations of quantum-interference nature. In the non-domain (normal) state of indium narrowing adjacent to NS interface, the nonresonance oscillations have been observed, with the period inversely proportional to the area of the interferometer orifice. In the domain intermediate state of the narrowing, the magneto-temperature resistive oscillations appeared, with the period determined by the coherence length in the magnetic field equal to the critical one. The oscillating component of resonance form has been observed in the conductance of the macroscopic N-aluminium part of the system. The phase of the oscillations appears to be shifted by π\pi compared to that of nonresonance oscillations. We offer an explanation in terms of the contribution into Josephson current from the coherent quasiparticles with energies of order of the Thouless energy. The behavior of dissipative transport with temperature has been studied in a clean normal metal in the vicinity of a single point NS contact.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, to be published in Low Temp.     Spin Information from Vector-Meson Decay in Photoproduction

    For the photoproduction of vector mesons, all single and double spin observables involving vector meson two-body decays are defined consistently in the γN\gamma N center of mass. These definitions yield a procedure for extracting physically meaningful single and double spin observables that are subject to known rules concerning their angle and energy evolution. As part of this analysis, we show that measuring the two-meson decay of a photoproduced ρ\rho or ϕ\phi does not determine the vector meson's vector polarization, but only its tensor polarization. The vector meson decay into lepton pairs is also insensitive to the vector meson's vector polarization, unless one measures the spin of one of the leptons. Similar results are found for all double spin observables which involve observation of vector meson decay. To access the vector meson's vector polarization, one therefore needs to either measure the spin of the decay leptons, make an analysis of the background interference effects or relate the vector meson's vector polarization to other accessible spin observables.Comment: 22 pages, 3 figure

    The effect of SO3 pressure in the gas phase on the Na2SO4 induced hot corrosion of Co-Cr, Ni-Cr, and Co-Cr-Al alloys was studied in the temperature range 700 to 750 C. The degradation of the Co-Cr and Ni-Cr alloys was found to be associated with the formation of liquid mixed sulfates (CoSO4-Na2SO4 or NiSO4-Na2SO4) which provided a selective dissolution of the Co or Ni and a subsequent sulfidation oxidation mode of attack which prevented the maintenance of a protective Cr2O3 film. A clear mechanism was not developed for the degradation of Co-Cr-Al alloys. A pitting corrosion morphology was induced by a number of different mechanisms

    Density Matrices for a Chain of Oscillators

    We consider chains with an optical phonon spectrum and study the reduced density matrices which occur in density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations. Both for one site and for half of the chain, these are found to be exponentials of bosonic operators. Their spectra, which are correspondingly exponential, are determined and discussed. The results for large systems are obtained from the relation to a two-dimensional Gaussian model.Comment: 15 pages,8 figure

    Strong genetic differentiation of the East-Himalayan Megacodon stylophorus (Gentianaceae) detected by Inter-Simple Sequence Repeats (ISSR)

    Megacodon stylophorus (Clarke) Smith is a perennial alpine herb endemic to the species-rich eastern Himalayan region. Its populations are locally scattered as isolated patches throughout this region. Genetic variation within and among six populations of this species was assessed using ISSR fingerprinting with 13 primers. High levels of genetic diversity exist within species (P = 69.83%, HT = 0.1949 and Hsp = 0.3047), while the within-population diversity is low (P = 11.21%, HE = 0.0532 and Hpop = 0.0792). Extraordinarily high levels of genetic differentiation were detected among populations based on various statistics, including Nei's genetic diversity analysis (72.7%), Shannon's diversity index (74.01%) and AMOVA (80.70%). That is, populations shared low levels of genetic identity (I = 0.8203 ± 0.0430). This genetic structure was probably due to severe genetic drift of the small-sized patchy populations resulting from postglacial habitat fragmentations. The observed genetic structure of the populations implies that as many populations as possible should be considered for any in situ and ex situ conservation practice on this specie

    Surface collective modes in the topological insulators Bi2_2Se3_3 and Bi0.5_{0.5}Sb1.5_{1.5}Te3x_{3-x}Sex_{x}

    We used low-energy, momentum-resolved inelastic electron scattering to study surface collective modes of the three-dimensional topological insulators Bi2_2Se3_3 and Bi0.5_{0.5}Sb1.5_{1.5}Te3x_{3-x}Sex_{x}. Our goal was to identify the "spin plasmon" predicted by Raghu and co-workers [S. Raghu, et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 116401 (2010)]. Instead, we found that the primary collective mode is a surface plasmon arising from the bulk, free carrers in these materials. This excitation dominates the spectral weight in the bosonic function of the surface, χ"(q,ω)\chi "(\textbf{q},\omega), at THz energy scales, and is the most likely origin of a quasiparticle dispersion kink observed in previous photoemission experiments. Our study suggests that the spin plasmon may mix with this other surface mode, calling for a more nuanced understanding of optical experiments in which the spin plasmon is reported to play a role.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Researchers often experience difficulties recruiting hard-to-reach populations. This is especially so for studies involving those who have been historically stigmatized, such as individuals who challenge heteronormative expectations or people who experience mental ill health. The authors aimed to obtain the views of sexual minority adolescents (n=25) about what encouraged their participation in a research project. The authors used a general inductive approach to analyze interview data. Feedback consisted of 2 main overarching themes: tips and suggestions for future research and appreciate participants’ motivation to get involved in research. Strategies for how recruitment can be optimized for studies involving sexual minority young people are discussed
