Community service: it always means more when it comes from the heart

    Get PDF
Community service itself is a voluntary activity. It is up to students to choose and it should not be an obligation or an assignment. Students need to have an opinion on what they want to do as service so that they will enjoy the experience and thus be able to learn from it

General Approach for the Sensitivity Analysis and Optimization of Integrated Optical Evanescent-Wave Sensors

The optimization of integrated optical evanescent-wave sensors is dual. For optimal performances, we require waveguides with both maximal sensitivity to the measurand, the quantity intended to be measured, and minimal sensitivities to perturbations. In this context, fully numerical approaches are extremely powerful, but demand huge computer resources. We address this issue by introducing a general and efficient approach, based on the formal derivation of analytical dispersion equations, to express and evaluate all waveguide sensitivities. In particular, we apply this approach to rectangular waveguides, to discuss its accuracy and its use within sensitivity optimization procedures

Some solutions to respond climate change for the Mekong Delta, Viet Nam

    Get PDF
In the recent decades, the Mekong River Delta has suffered quite significant impacts of climate change. Fluctuations of weather elements and sea level rises have caused adverse changes, namely: the appearance of unusual high and low levels of annual floods, more and more intense storms, more severe droughts, forest fires, river erosion, cyclones, and tidal surges appear increasingly more dangerous. Traditional adaptation measures to the environmental conditions may be unsuitable in the context of climate change in the Mekong River Delta. This paper summarizes some of the new adaptation measures that scientists and policy planners have proposed for the area to cope with the negative impacts of climate change

Market entry strategy to the Finnish market. Case company: Klimato

    Get PDF
In recent time, global warming has become a hot topic all over the world. There are many factors contributing to this global issue and the food industry takes up to one-fourth of the total greenhouse emissions generated to the environment. However, many people from different age groups start to be aware of their impact and changing their eating habits will contribute to the progress of making a difference. The carbon label which indicates the total carbon footprint of their meal is a promising solution, however, albeit still new and unfamiliar to most people. The main objective of the research is to choose the most effective entry mode strategy to the Finnish market for Klimato, the case company. In order to design an entry plan for the case company to the hosting country, the author presents the analysis of the target market, the potential of “carbon label” in Finland and studies about the company's current situation to come into final conclusion. The author utilizes PEST model, Porter’s Five Forces model, Segmentation-Targeting-Positioning (STP) model in order to achieve the goal of the study. The results of this thesis conclude that Klimato is potentially able to enter to Finland, initially through indirect mode (piggyback) then establishes a sales branch in the host market
