    This thesis looks into two specific topics regarding the relationship between bank lending and the economy. The first is about how non-performing loans (NPLs) are treated by individual banks, how their actions affect their viability, as well as its impact on the market for collateral. The objective is to provide insight into the decision-making process of a typical bank, and how decisions made from such a process impact on asset markets. The second topic relates to the transmission of monetary policy changes through variations in the volume of bank lending in Australia, with particular reference to the firms sector. Insight on this channel of transmission can contribute to the literature on how monetary policy is transmitted through the banking system and affects the wider economy. Chapter 2 explores the incentives that banks face when treating bad loans. Since write offs frequently involve losses, capital adequacy requirements present a binding constraint on banks' plans for liquidating bad loans. When bank safety is threatened, banks are forced to evergreen loans to bad customers and profitability is thus reduced. It is demonstrated that lowering regulatory capital requirements can ease this constraint and allow more liquidation of bad loans when liquidation is desirable. Chapter 3 investigates the effects on the asset market of bank actions in dealing with their NPLs, by extending the model in Chapter 2 to include interactions with the market for collateral. Results show that liquidation of bad loans may not be as detrimental to asset prices as commonly argued, because funds recouped from liquidation can be recycled into new loans which support the asset market. While capital regulation protects the bank health, it may sometimes limit the amount of liquidation and hence reduce the impact of the recycling channel'. This supports the idea that varying capital requirements countercyclically can dampen the economic cycle, notwithstanding the potential problems with making this a tool for economic management. Additionally, this chapter finds a distinction between two types of forbearance, that based on bank profit maximisation, and from concerns over a bank's financial health. Chapter 4 makes use of aggregate time series data in Australia to look into the strength of the bank lending channel of monetary policy. Investigation is done by examining whether monetary aggregates affect the spread between bank loan rates and bond rates. Results indicate that for small firms, the strength of the channel is dependent negatively on the size of the real deposit base. This is because deposits represent the supply of bank loans which if increased lowers bank lending rates. For large firms a different mechanism operates suggesting reduced influence of the channel, shown by larger loan volumes coinciding with a narrowing spread, implying that banks prefer to concentrate on lending to larger businesses. Rises in foreign funding coincide with a widening spread, but after a lag they also help to reduce upward pressure on loan rates, suggesting a weakening of the channel as foreign funding rises to relieve pressure on the market for bank loans

    Changing Impact of Fiscal Policy on Selected ASEAN Countries

    This paper investigates the effectiveness of fiscal policy in five Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Through a structural vector autoregression (VAR) model, government spending is found to have weak and largely insignificant impact on output, while taxes are found to have outcomes contrary to conventional theory. Extensions using a time-varying VAR model reveal the impact of taxes on output mainly reflect heightened concerns over public finances amid the Asian financial crisis and the recent global financial crisis. On the other hand, for Singapore and Thailand, there is evidence that government spending can at times be useful as a tool for countercyclical policy.ASEAN; fiscal policy; structural VAR; time-varying VAR

    Individualized prevention of proton pump inhibitor related adverse events by risk stratification

    Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are commonly used for gastric acid-related disorders, but their safety profile and risk stratification for high-burden diseases need further investigation. Analyzing over 2 million participants from five prospective cohorts from the US, the UK, and China, we found that PPI use correlated with increased risk of 15 leading global diseases, such as ischemic heart disease, diabetes, respiratory infections, and chronic kidney disease. These associations showed dose-response relationships and consistency across different PPI types. PPI-related absolute risks increased with baseline risks, with approximately 82% of cases occurring in those at the upper 40% of the baseline predicted risk, and only 11.5% of cases occurring in individuals at the lower 50% of the baseline risk. While statistical association does not necessarily imply causation, its potential safety concerns suggest that personalized use of PPIs through risk stratification might guide appropriate decision-making for patients, clinicians, and the public

    Determinants of property rights in Poland and Ukraine: the polity or politicians?

    North (1994) famously remarked that ‘it is the polity that defines and enforces property rights’. This paper traces the development of property rights in Poland and Ukraine and explores their divergence over the past three centuries using North's framework of economic calculation. In each country, the distribution of political power and political institutions had a profound impact on property rights. Indeed, while it was the Polish polity that defined the evolution of property rights from 1386 to 1795 and then from 1989 onward, due to diffusion of power, it was Ukrainian politicians that controlled the destiny of property rights for most of Ukraine's history. This situation has not changed despite the Maidan revolution in Ukraine, and recent moves in Poland show how tenuous property rights are in the face of political opposition

    Age-specific reference values for low psoas muscle index at the L3 vertebra level in healthy populations: A multicenter study

    Background and aimsThe progressive and generalized loss of skeletal muscle mass, strength and physical function is defined as sarcopenia. Sarcopenia is closely related to the prognosis of patients. Accurate diagnosis and adequate management of sarcopenia are crucial. The psoas muscle mass index taken at the third lumbar vertebra (L3-PMI, cm2/m2) is one of the established methods for evaluating skeletal muscle mass. However, the cutoff values of L3-PMI for diagnosis of sarcopenia are not yet to be clarified in Asian populations. We attempted to establish reference values for low L3-PMI that would be suitable for defining sarcopenia in the Northern Chinese population.MethodsThis was a retrospective, multicenter cross-sectional study. A search of abdominal CT imaging reports was conducted in four representative cities in northern China. Transverse CT images were measured using the analysis software Slice-O-Matic. Low psoas muscle index was defined as the 5th percentile or mean-2SD of the study group.Results1,787 healthy individuals in the study were grouped by age. The sex and number of people in each group were similar. L3-PMI had a negative linear correlation with age, and a strong correlation with the skeletal muscle index taken at the third lumbar vertebrae (L3-SMI, cm2/m2). The L3-PMI reference values in males were 5.41 cm2/m2 for 20–29 years, 4.71 cm2/m2 for 30–39 years, 4.65 cm2/m2 for 40–49 years, 4.10 cm2/m2 for 50–59 years and 3.68 cm2/m2 for over 60 years by using 5th percentile threshold. Similarly, the reference values in females were 3.32, 3.40, 3.18, 2.91, and 2.62 cm2/m2. When using mean-2SD as the reference, the values for each age group were 4.57, 4.16, 4.03, 3.37, and 2.87 cm2/m2 for males and 2.79, 2.70, 2.50, 2.30, and 2.26 cm2/m2 for females, respectively.ConclusionWe defined the reference values of age-specific low skeletal muscle mass when simply evaluated by L3-PMI. Further studies about the association of sarcopenia using these reference values with certain clinical outcomes or diseases are needed

    Oxidative stress in children late after Kawasaki disease: relationship with carotid atherosclerosis and stiffness

    Background: Persistent arterial dysfunction in patients with a history of Kawasaki disease (KD) and an integral role of oxidative stress in the development of cardiovascular disease are increasingly recognized. We sought to test the hypothesis that oxidative stress is increased in KD patients and related to carotid atherosclerotic changes and stiffness. Methods: We compared the serum levels of oxidative stress biomarkers, carotid intima-media thickness (IMT), and carotid stiffness index among KD patients with coronary aneurysms (n = 32), those without coronary complications (n = 19), and controls (n = 32). Results: Compared with controls, patients with coronary aneurysms had significantly higher serum levels of malonaldehyde (2.62 ± 0.12 μM vs 2.22 ± 0.07 μM, p = 0.014) and hydroperoxides (26.50 ± 1.13 μM vs 22.50 ± 0.62 μM, p = 0.008). A linear trend of the magnitude of oxidative stress in relation to inflammatory damage was observed for malonaldehyde (p = 0.018) and hydroperoxides (p = 0.014) levels. Serum malonaldehyde and hydroperoxide levels correlated positively with carotid IMT (p < 0.001 and p = 0.034, respectively) and stiffness index (p = 0.001 and p = 0.021, respectively). Multiple linear regression analysis identified serum malonaldehyde level as a significant determinant of carotid IMT (β = 0.31, p = 0.006) and stiffness (β = 0.27, p = 0.008). Conclusion: Our findings suggestoxidative stress is increased in KD patients with coronary aneurysms and is associated with carotid intima-media thickening and stiffening. © 2008 Cheung et al; licensee BioMed Central Ltd.published_or_final_versio

    Nomenclature for kidney function and disease: report of a Kidney Disease:Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) Consensus Conference

    The worldwide burden of kidney disease is rising, but public awareness remains limited, underscoring the need for more effective communication by stakeholders in the kidney health community. Despite this need for clarity, the nomenclature for describing kidney function and disease lacks uniformity. In June 2019, Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) convened a Consensus Conference with the goal of standardizing and refining the nomenclature used in the English language to describe kidney function and disease, and of developing a glossary that could be used in scientific publications. Guiding principles of the conference were that the revised nomenclature should be patient-centered, precise, and consistent with nomenclature used in the KDIGO guidelines. Conference attendees reached general consensus on the following recommendations: (i) to use "kidney" rather than "renal" or "nephro-" when referring to kidney disease and kidney function; (ii) to use "kidney failure" with appropriate descriptions of presence or absence of symptoms, signs, and treatment, rather than "end-stage kidney disease"; (iii) to use the KDIGO definition and classification of acute kidney diseases and disorders (AKD) and acute kidney injury (AKI), rather than alternative descriptions, to define and classify severity of AKD and AKI; (iv) to use the KDIGO definition and classification of chronic kidney disease (CKD) rather than alternative descriptions to define and classify severity of CKD; and (v) to use specific kidney measures, such as albuminuria or decreased glomerular filtration rate (GFR), rather than "abnormal" or "reduced" kidney function to describe alterations in kidney structure and function. A proposed 5-part glossary contains specific items for which there was general agreement. Conference attendees acknowledged limitations of the recommendations and glossary, but they considered standardization of scientific nomenclature to be essential for improving communication
