    Profiling and modeling of dc nitrogen microplasmas

    This article explores electric current and field distributions in dc microplasmas, which have distinctive characteristics that are not evident at larger dimensions. These microplasmas, which are powered by coplanar thin-film metal electrodes with 400-μm minimum separations on a glass substrate, are potentially useful for microsystems in both sensing and microfabrication contexts. Experiments in N2N2 ambient show that electron current favors electrode separations of 4 mm at 1.2 Torr, reducing to 0.4 mm at 10 Torr. The glow region is confined directly above the cathode, and within 200–500 μm of its lateral edge. Voltage gradients of 100 kV/m exist in this glow region at 1.2 Torr, increasing to 500 kV/m at 6 Torr, far in excess of those observed in larger plasmas. Numerical simulations indicate that the microplasmas are highly nonquasineutral, with a large ion density proximate to the cathode, responsible for a dense space-charge region, and the strong electric fields in the glow region.     Evolutionary innovations in Antarctic brittle stars linked to glacial refugia

    The drivers behind evolutionary innovations such as contrasting life histories and morphological change are central questions of evolutionary biology. However, the environmental and ecological contexts linked to evolutionary innovations are generally unclear. During the Pleistocene glacial cycles, grounded ice sheets expanded across the Southern Ocean continental shelf. Limited ice-free areas remained, and fauna were isolated from other refugial populations. Survival in Southern Ocean refugia could present opportunities for ecological adaptation and evolutionary innovation. Here, we reconstructed the phylogeographic patterns of circum-Antarctic brittle stars Ophionotus victoriae and O. hexactis with contrasting life histories (broadcasting vs brooding) and morphology (5 vs 6 arms). We examined the evolutionary relationship between the two species using cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) data. COI data suggested that O. victoriae is a single species (rather than a species complex) and is closely related to O. hexactis (a separate species). Since their recent divergence in the mid-Pleistocene, O. victoriae and O. hexactis likely persisted differently throughout glacial maxima, in deep-sea and Antarctic island refugia, respectively. Genetic connectivity, within and between the Antarctic continental shelf and islands, was also observed and could be linked to the Antarctic Circumpolar Current and local oceanographic regimes. Signatures of a probable seascape corridor linking connectivity between the Scotia Sea and Prydz Bay are also highlighted. We suggest that survival in Antarctic island refugia was associated with increase in arm number and a switch from broadcast spawning to brooding in O. hexactis, and propose that it could be linked to environmental changes (such as salinity) associated with intensified interglacial-glacial cycles

    Simple Viscous Flows: from Boundary Layers to the Renormalization Group

    The seemingly simple problem of determining the drag on a body moving through a very viscous fluid has, for over 150 years, been a source of theoretical confusion, mathematical paradoxes, and experimental artifacts, primarily arising from the complex boundary layer structure of the flow near the body and at infinity. We review the extensive experimental and theoretical literature on this problem, with special emphasis on the logical relationship between different approaches. The survey begins with the developments of matched asymptotic expansions, and concludes with a discussion of perturbative renormalization group techniques, adapted from quantum field theory to differential equations. The renormalization group calculations lead to a new prediction for the drag coefficient, one which can both reproduce and surpass the results of matched asymptotics

    Trace metals in aerosol at Terra Nova Bay, Antarctica.

    Atmospheric particulate with an aerodynamic diameter o10 mm (PM10) was sampled continuously during the austral summers of 2000–2001 and 2001–2002 at a coastal site near to the Italian base of Terra Nova, Antarctica. Li, Pb, Cd, U, Ba, Bi, Cs, Rb, Tl, Sr, Al, V, Fe, Cu, Mn, Zn, Co, Ag were determined by inductively coupled sector field mass spectroscopy (ICP-SFMS) after sample digestion by a combination of HF, HNO3, and H2O2 in ultraclean conditions. Quality control of the analytical procedure was carried out by blank control, by evaluating the limits of detection, recoveries and repeatability. Concentrations found are extremely low for most metals, confirming the high purity of Antarctic aerosol. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) highlights high correlations among Pb, Cr, Bi, Cu and Zn concentration values and among Li, U, Ba, Cs, Rb, Al, V, Fe, Mn, Co concentration values permitting the identification of two principal source groups, namely crustal dust and human emission activities. Elements of anthropogenic origins (Pb, Cr, Cu, Zn) were highly enriched with respect to their crustal composition

    A ‘modified de Gramont’ regimen of fluorouracil, alone and with oxaliplatin, for advanced colorectal cancer

    The standard de Gramont (dG) regimen of fortnightly leucovorin, bolus fluorouracil and 22-h infusion of fluorouracil, d1+2, and the same regimen plus oxaliplatin, are effective but also cumbersome. We therefore present simplified ‘Modified de Gramont’ (MdG) regimens. Forty-six advanced gastrointestinal cancer patients entered a dose-exploring study of MdG, including an expanded cohort of colorectal cancer patients at optimum dose. Treatment (fortnightly) comprised: 2-h i.v.i. leucovorin (350 mg d,l-LV or 175 mg l-LV, not adjusted for patient surface area); bolus fluorouracil (400 mg m−2), then ambulatory 46-h fluorouracil infusion (2000–3600 mg m−2, cohort escalation). Subsequently, 62 colorectal patients (25 unpretreated; 37 fluorouracil-resistant) received MdG plus oxaliplatin (OxMdG) 85 mg m−2. Fluorouracil pharmacokinetics during MdG were compared with dG. The optimum fluorouracil doses for MdG alone were determined as 400 mg m−2 bolus + 2800 mg m−2 46-h infusion. A lower dose of 400 mg m−2 bolus + 2400 mg m−2 infusion which, like dG produces minimal toxicity, was chosen for the OxMdG combination. Fluorouracil exposure (AUC0–48 h) at this lower dose is equivalent to dG. With OxMdG, grade 3–4 toxicity was rare (neutropenia 2.8% cycles; vomiting or diarrhoea <1% cycles), but despite this there were two infection-associated deaths. Oxaliplatin was omitted for cumulative neurotoxicity in 17 out of 62 patients. Objective responses in colorectal cancer patients were: 1st-line MdG (22 assessable): PR=36%, NC=32%, PD=32%. 1st-line OxMdG (24 assessable): CR/PR=72%; NC=20%; PD=8%; 2nd line OxMdG (34 assessable): PR=12%; NC=38%; PD=50%. MdG and OxMdG are convenient and well-tolerated. OxMdG was particularly active as 1st-line treatment of advanced colorectal cancer. Both regimens are being further evaluated in the current UK MRC phase III trial
