Cultural Inheritance and Fertility Outcomes: An Analysis from Evolutionary and Interdisciplinary Perspectives

    Get PDF
Taking evolutionary and interdisciplinary perspectives, this study views the reproductive result as an evolutionary outcome that may be affected by parental characteristics through cultural inheritance. We hypothesize that inheriting more cultural traits from parents leads to a greater resemblance between fertility outcomes of the offspring and their parents. In societies that experience a demographic transition, a greater resemblance can be indicated by a higher level of fertility of the offspring and a sooner transition from union formation to childbearing. We operationalize inheriting cultural traits from parents as reporting a religious affiliation the same as those of their parents. Through analyzing data from the National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) Cycle 6, our results show that inheriting the same religious traits from parents does have an effect on one’s fertility. In particular, women who reported the same religious affiliations as those of their parents reported a greater number of children. They tend to have births inside, rather than outside, of marriage. Inside marriage, they are also more likely to give births sooner, rather than later. These findings support our hypotheses and help to build a theoretical framework that explains the changes in fertility outcomes from an interdisciplinary perspective

Comparing the Profitability of Hybrid, Inbred, and Organic Rice Production

Rice is a staple food for most Filipinos across the country, with more than 90% of Filipinos consuming it on a daily basis. In the past two decades, annual supply of rice at 2.18% has not been enough to sustain the country’s needs, whose annual population increases at 2.20%. One of the most significant programs of the government for the rice sector is to enhance provincial rice self-sufficiency through the use of proven farming technologies that not only increase yield but also raise farmers’ incomes. Given the options to attain higher yields, this study investigated the profitability of certified inbred varieties, hybrid, and organic rice by determining the cost of production and net income of farmers and using partial budget analysis. Results show that rice farmers who ventured into hybrid rice production incurred the highest production cost per hectare per cropping (PhP37,428.521) compared to inbred (PhP26,717.64) and organic (PhP30,210.81) rice production. Hybrid rice production gave the highest income for farmers per hectare per cropping (PhP147,690.54) compared to inbred (PhP113,006.44) and organic (PhP84,785.46) rice productions. Partial budget analysis showed that additional income was gained by rice farmers shifting from organic to hybrid rice production per hectare per cropping (PhP43,195.25) and those shifting from inbred to organic rice production (PhP6,394.06). However, farmers shifting from organic to inbred rice production lost income amounting to PhP16,994.56 per hectare per cropping due to added cost such as farm inputs, labor, and low yield. To conclude, planting hybrid variety is recommended as it gives farmers the highest net income

The Meaning of Project-Based Learning among B’Laan High School Students: A Phenomenological Study

    Get PDF
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to investigate the realites behind the Project-Based Learning in the perspective of Blaan High School students, their coping mechanisms to address the the challenges in the project-based learning, and their insights that were shared to their peers and to the academe in general. This qualitative phenomenological study was participated by 17 students from Pongoleel Integrated School in the Division of Sarangani for School Year 2015-2016. There were in-depth interview and focused group discussions conducted. The result of the interview generated themes that were transcribed, translated, coded, and described. As regards to the meaning of project-based learning, the themes that were  generated were as follows: offshoot of learning, grade augmentation, added financial burden and time demand. While for the coping mechanism of students, the themes that were generated: prioritization, resourcefulness and creativity, teamwork and collaboration, parental support,  industry and perseverance. As to their insights, the themes included: give it ample time, give it considerate effort, make it affordable, make it relevant and give distinct guidelines

Example Based Learning for View-Based Human Face Detection

    Get PDF
We present an example-based learning approach for locating vertical frontal views of human faces in complex scenes. The technique models the distribution of human face patterns by means of a few view-based "face'' and "non-face'' prototype clusters. At each image location, the local pattern is matched against the distribution-based model, and a trained classifier determines, based on the local difference measurements, whether or not a human face exists at the current image location. We provide an analysis that helps identify the critical components of our system
