    Superconducting properties of SmO1-xFxFeAs wires with Tc = 52 K prepared by the powder-in-tube method

    Full text link
    We demonstrate that Ta sheathed SmO1-xFxFeAs wires were successfully fabricated by the powder-in-tube (PIT) method for the first time. Structural analysis by mean of x-ray diffraction shows that the main phase of SmO1-xFxFeAs was obtained by this synthesis method. The transition temperature of the SmO0.65F0.35FeAs wires was confirmed to be as high as 52 K. Based on magnetization measurements, it is found that a globe current can flow on macroscopic sample dimensions with Jc of ~3.9x10^3 A/cm^2 at 5 K and self field, while a high Jc about 2x10^5 A/cm^2 is observed within the grains, suggesting that a significant improvement in the globle Jc is possible. It should be noted that the Jc exhibits a very weak field dependence behavior. Furthermore, the upper critical fields (Hc2) determined according to the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg formula are (T= 0 K) = 120 T, indicating a very encouraging application of the new superconductors.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figure

    Health Effects of Exposure to Natural Arsenic in Groundwater and Coal in China: An Overview of Occurrence

    Get PDF
    Between 2001 and 2005, 21,155 of 445,638 wells in 20,517 villages in 292 counties in 16 provinces from China, or 5% of wells, were found to contain > 50 μg/L arsenic (As) by field testing with the Merck As kit. We achieved quality assurance of analysis of at least 10% of the wells containing > 50 μg/L As using hydride generation atomic fluorescence spectrometry and silver dithiodicarbomate spectrometry. Our best estimate of the population exposed to > 50 μg/L As in drinking water was 582,769. This is probably an underestimate for China because of the limited area surveyed. In a survey of 135,492 individuals in eight provinces, we used the National Diagnosis Standard for Endemic Arsenicosis and identified 10,096 cases of arsenicosis with various degrees of skin lesions. The arsenicosis occurrence rate of 7.5% is likely an overestimate, because the survey focused more on known and suspected endemic areas of arsenicosis. The occurrence of arsenicosis correlates positively with the percentage of wells containing > 50 μg/L As, or at a ratio of 1 to 5%. Based on both the amount of As in well water and the rate of occurrence of arsenicosis, Shanxi province, Inner Mongolia autonomous region, and Jilin province are the top three areas in China as of 2005 for exposure to endemic As from drinking water. Our survey also identified exposure to high levels of As from wells in several provinces and from the indoor burning of coal containing high levels of As in Shaanxi province. These areas, however, have not had any reports of previous arsenicosis endemics. In the endemic areas, the average rate of occurrence of arsenicosis at advanced stages was 1.2%, possibly because of a long exposure time of > 20 years; the rate of occurrence increased to 2.7% when we included a high dose of As exposure from the indoor burning of coal. Mitigation to reduce As exposure remains a challenge in rural China

    Remote Data Retrieval for Bioinformatics Applications: An Agent Migration Approach

    Get PDF
    Some of the approaches have been developed to retrieve data automatically from one or multiple remote biological data sources. However, most of them require researchers to remain online and wait for returned results. The latter not only requires highly available network connection, but also may cause the network overload. Moreover, so far none of the existing approaches has been designed to address the following problems when retrieving the remote data in a mobile network environment: (1) the resources of mobile devices are limited; (2) network connection is relatively of low quality; and (3) mobile users are not always online. To address the aforementioned problems, we integrate an agent migration approach with a multi-agent system to overcome the high latency or limited bandwidth problem by moving their computations to the required resources or services. More importantly, the approach is fit for the mobile computing environments. Presented in this paper are also the system architecture, the migration strategy, as well as the security authentication of agent migration. As a demonstration, the remote data retrieval from GenBank was used to illustrate the feasibility of the proposed approach

    Full text link
    A sample of 3.95M ψ(2S)\psi(2S) decays registered in the BES detector are used to study final states containing pairs of octet and decuplet baryons. We report branching fractions for ψ(2S)ppˉ\psi(2S)\to p\bar{p}, ΛΛˉ\Lambda\bar{\Lambda}, Σ0Σˉ0\Sigma^0\bar{\Sigma}{}^0, ΞΞˉ+\Xi^-\bar{\Xi}{}^+, Δ++Δˉ\Delta^{++}\bar{\Delta}{}^{--}, Σ+(1385)Σˉ(1385)\Sigma^+(1385)\bar{\Sigma}{}^-(1385), Ξ0(1530)Ξˉ0(1530)\Xi^0(1530)\bar{\Xi}{}^0(1530), and ΩΩˉ+\Omega^-\bar{\Omega}{}^+. These results are compared to expectations based on the SU(3)-flavor symmetry, factorization, and perturbative QCD.Comment: 22 pages, 21 figures, 4 table

    Study of the P-wave charmonium state \chi_{cJ} in \psi(2S) decays

    Full text link
    The processes ψ(2S)γπ+π\psi(2S)\to \gamma \pi^+ \pi^-, γK+K\gamma K^+ K^- and γppˉ\gamma p \bar{p} have been studied using a sample of 3.7×1063.7 \times 10^6 produced ψ(2S)\psi(2S) decays. We determine the total width of the χc0\chi_{c0} to be Γχc0tot=14.3±2.0±3.0\Gamma^{tot}_{\chi_{c0}} = 14.3\pm 2.0\pm 3.0 MeV. We present the first measurement of the branching fraction B(χc0ppˉ)=(16.3±4.4±5.4)×105B(\chi_{c0} \to p \bar{p}) = (16.3 \pm 4.4 \pm 5.4)\times 10^{-5}, where the first error is statistical and the second one systematic. Branching fractions of χc0,2π+π\chi_{c0,2} \to \pi^+ \pi^- and K+KK^+ K^- are also reported.Comment: 10 pages, revtex, 3 figures, 2 table

    Measurement of the Inclusive Charm Cross Section at 4.03 GeV and 4.14 GeV

    Full text link
    The cross section for charmed meson production at s=4.03\sqrt{s} = 4.03 and 4.14 GeV has been measured with the Beijing Spectrometer. The measurement was made using 22.3 pb1pb^{-1} of e+ee^+e^- data collected at 4.03 GeV and 1.5 pb1pb^{-1} of e+ee^+e^- data collected at 4.14 GeV. Inclusive observed cross sections for the production of charged and neutral D mesons and momentum spectra are presented. Observed cross sections were radiatively corrected to obtain tree level cross sections. Measurements of the total hadronic cross section are obtained from the charmed meson cross section and an extrapolation of results from below the charm threshold.Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures. Using a sample of (1310.6±7.0)×106(1310.6\pm7.0)\times10^6 J/ψJ/\psi events recorded with the BESIII detector at the symmetric electron positron collider BEPCII, we report the observation of the decay of the (11S0)(1^1 S_0) charmonium state ηc\eta_c into a pair of ω\omega mesons in the process J/ψγωωJ/\psi\to\gamma\omega\omega. The branching fraction is measured for the first time to be B(ηcωω)=(2.88±0.10±0.46±0.68)×103\mathcal{B}(\eta_c\to\omega\omega)= (2.88\pm0.10\pm0.46\pm0.68)\times10^{-3}, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third is from the uncertainty of B(J/ψγηc)\mathcal{B}(J/\psi\to\gamma\eta_c). The mass and width of the ηc\eta_c are determined as M=(2985.9±0.7±2.1)M=(2985.9\pm0.7\pm2.1)\,MeV/c2c^2 and Γ=(33.8±1.6±4.1)\Gamma=(33.8\pm1.6\pm4.1)\,MeV.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figure

    Improved measurement of the absolute branching fraction of D+Kˉ0μ+νμD^{+}\rightarrow \bar K^0 \mu^{+}\nu_{\mu}

    Get PDF
    By analyzing 2.93 fb1^{-1} of data collected at s=3.773\sqrt s=3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector, we measure the absolute branching fraction B(D+Kˉ0μ+νμ)=(8.72±0.07stat.±0.18sys.)%{\mathcal B}(D^{+}\rightarrow\bar K^0\mu^{+}\nu_{\mu})=(8.72 \pm 0.07_{\rm stat.} \pm 0.18_{\rm sys.})\%, which is consistent with previous measurements within uncertainties but with significantly improved precision. Combining the Particle Data Group values of B(D0Kμ+νμ){\mathcal B}(D^0\to K^-\mu^+\nu_\mu), B(D+Kˉ0e+νe){\mathcal B}(D^{+}\rightarrow\bar K^0 e^{+}\nu_{e}), and the lifetimes of the D0D^0 and D+D^+ mesons with the value of B(D+Kˉ0μ+νμ){\mathcal B}(D^{+}\rightarrow\bar K^0 \mu^{+}\nu_{\mu}) measured in this work, we determine the following ratios of partial widths: Γ(D0Kμ+νμ)/Γ(D+Kˉ0μ+νμ)=0.963±0.044\Gamma(D^0\to K^-\mu^+\nu_\mu)/\Gamma(D^{+}\rightarrow\bar K^0\mu^{+}\nu_{\mu})=0.963\pm0.044 and Γ(D+Kˉ0μ+νμ)/Γ(D+Kˉ0e+νe)=0.988±0.033\Gamma(D^{+}\rightarrow\bar K^0 \mu^{+}\nu_{\mu})/\Gamma(D^{+}\rightarrow\bar K^0 e^{+}\nu_{e})=0.988\pm0.033.Comment: 9 pages; 8 figure

    Observation of an anomalous line shape of the ηπ+π\eta^{\prime}\pi^{+}\pi^{-} mass spectrum near the ppˉp\bar{p} mass threshold in J/ψγηπ+πJ/\psi\rightarrow\gamma\eta^{\prime}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}

    Get PDF
    Using 1.09×1091.09\times10^{9} J/ψJ/\psi events collected by the BESIII experiment in 2012, we study the J/ψγηπ+πJ/\psi\rightarrow\gamma\eta^{\prime}\pi^{+}\pi^{-} process and observe a significant abrupt change in the slope of the ηπ+π\eta^{\prime}\pi^{+}\pi^{-} invariant mass distribution at the proton-antiproton (ppˉp\bar{p}) mass threshold. We use two models to characterize the ηπ+π\eta^{\prime}\pi^{+}\pi^{-} line shape around 1.85 GeV/c21.85~\text{GeV}/c^{2}: one which explicitly incorporates the opening of a decay threshold in the mass spectrum (Flatt\'{e} formula), and another which is the coherent sum of two resonant amplitudes. Both fits show almost equally good agreement with data, and suggest the existence of either a broad state around 1.85 GeV/c21.85~\text{GeV}/c^{2} with strong couplings to ppˉp\bar{p} final states or a narrow state just below the ppˉp\bar{p} mass threshold. Although we cannot distinguish between the fits, either one supports the existence of a ppˉp\bar{p} molecule-like state or bound state with greater than 7σ7\sigma significance
