Comment on "Fock-Darwin States of Dirac Electrons in Graphene-Based Artificial Atoms"
Chen, Apalkov, and Chakraborty (Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 186803 (2007)) have
computed Fock-Darwin levels of a graphene dot by including only basis states
with energies larger than or equal to zero. We show that their results violate
the Hellman-Feynman theorem. A correct treatment must include both positive and
negative energy basis states. Additional basis states lead to new energy levels
in the optical spectrum and anticrossings between optical transition lines.Comment: 1 page, 1 figure, accepted for publication in PR
How Much Does Money Matter in a Direct Democracy?
The fine-structure splitting of quantum confined InxGa1-x Nexcitons is investigated using polarization-sensitive photoluminescence spectroscopy. The majority of the studied emission lines exhibits mutually orthogonal fine-structure components split by 100-340 mu eV, as measured from the cleaved edge of the sample. Lower bounds on concurrence and separability conditions
We obtain analytical lower bounds on the concurrence of bipartite quantum
systems in arbitrary dimensions related to the violation of separability
conditions based on local uncertainty relations and on the Bloch representation
of density matrices. We also illustrate how these results complement and
improve those recently derived [K. Chen, S. Albeverio, and S.-M. Fei, Phys.
Rev. Lett. 95, 040504 (2005)] by considering the Peres-Horodecki and the

Finding succinct ordered minimal perfect hashing functions
An ordered minimal perfect hash table is one in which no collisions occur among a predefined set of keys, no space is unused, and the data are placed in the table in order. A new method for creating ordered minimal perfect hashing functions is presented. The method presented is based on a method developed by Fox, Heath, Daoud, and Chen, but it creates hash functions with representation space requirements closer to the theoretical lower bound. The method presented requires approximately 10% less space to represent generated hash functions, and is easier to implement than Fox et al's. However, a higher time complexity makes it practical for small sets only (< 1000)
Chen Shui-bian: on independence
Chen Shui-bian achieved an international reputation for his promotion of Taiwan independence. Whilst that reputation may have been well earned, the analyses on which this conclusion is based are frequently flawed in two ways. First, by using an undifferentiated notion of independence, they tend to conflate sovereignty with less threatening expressions of Taiwanese identity and pro-democracy discourse. Second, by failing to take into account the impact of immediate strategic context, analysts ignore a fundamental element of democratic political communication. In our empirical analysis of more than 2,000 of Chen’s speeches, we seek to avoid both flaws by unpacking the concept of independence and taking into account Chen’s strategic relationship with his primary audiences. Our findings challenge popular portrayals of Chen, but more importantly they have strong implications for policy makers and students of political rhetoric with regard to current and future ROC presidents
