    Enhancing Transparency and Control when Drawing Data-Driven Inferences about Individuals

    Recent studies have shown that information disclosed on social network sites (such as Facebook) can be used to predict personal characteristics with surprisingly high accuracy. In this paper we examine a method to give online users transparency into why certain inferences are made about them by statistical models, and control to inhibit those inferences by hiding ("cloaking") certain personal information from inference. We use this method to examine whether such transparency and control would be a reasonable goal by assessing how difficult it would be for users to actually inhibit inferences. Applying the method to data from a large collection of real users on Facebook, we show that a user must cloak only a small portion of her Facebook Likes in order to inhibit inferences about their personal characteristics.     Nanopencil as a wear-tolerant probe for ultrahigh density data storage

    A dielectric-sheathed carbon nanotube probe, resembling a “nanopencil,” has been fabricated by conformal deposition of silicon-oxide on a carbon nanotube and subsequent “sharpening” to expose its tip. The high aspect-ratio nanopencil probe takes advantage of the small nanotube electrode size, while avoiding bending and buckling issues encountered with naked or polymer-coated carbon nanotube probes. Since the effective electrode diameter of the probe would not change even after significant wear, it is capable of long-lasting read/write operations in contact mode with a bit size of several nanometers

    Resonance and Double Negative Behavior in Metamaterials

    A generic class of metamaterials is introduced and is shown to exhibit frequency dependent double negative effective properties. We develop a rigorous method for calculating the frequency intervals where either double negative or double positive effective properties appear and show how these intervals imply the existence of propagating Bloch waves inside sub-wavelength structures. The branches of the dispersion relation associated with Bloch modes are shown to be explicitly determined by the Dirichlet spectrum of the high dielectric phase and the generalized electrostatic spectra of the complement.Comment: This is the final version of the paper accepted for publication in Archive for Rational Mechanics and Analysis March 4, 201

    Intravital Multiphoton Microscopy with Fluorescent Bile Salts in Rats as an In Vivo Biomarker for Hepatobiliary Transport Inhibition

    The bile salt export pump (BSEP) is expressed at the canalicular domain of hepatocytes, where it mediates the elimination of monovalent bile salts into the bile. Inhibition of BSEP is considered a susceptibility factor for drug-induced liver injury that often goes undetected during nonclinical testing. Although in vitro assays exist for screening BSEP inhibition, a reliable and specific method for confirming Bsep inhibition in vivo would be a valuable follow up to a BSEP screening strategy, helping to put a translatable context around in vitro inhibition data, incorporating processes such as metabolism, protein binding, and other exposure properties that are lacking in most in vitro BSEP models. Here, we describe studies in which methods of quantitative intravital microscopy were used to identify dose-dependent effects of two known BSEP/Bsep inhibitors, 2-[4-[4-(butylcarbamoyl)-2-[(2,4-dichlorophenyl)sulfonylamino]phenoxy]-3-methoxyphenyl]acetic acid (AMG-009) and bosentan, on hepatocellular transport of the fluorescent bile salts cholylglycyl amidofluorescein and cholyl-lysyl-fluorescein in rats. Results of these studies demonstrate that the intravital microscopy approach is capable of detecting Bsep inhibition at drug doses well below those found to increase serum bile acid levels, and also indicate that basolateral efflux transporters play a significant role in preventing cytosolic accumulation of bile acids under conditions of Bsep inhibition in rats. Studies of this kind can both improve our understanding of exposures needed to inhibit Bsep in vivo and provide unique insights into drug effects in ways that can improve our ability interpret animal studies for the prediction of human drug hepatotoxicity

    A practical method of measuring oxygen consumption in children with complex mixing circulations by the use of thermodilution cardiac output studies

    ObjectiveWe describe a method to measure oxygen consumption (VO2) and pulmonary vascular resistive index (PVRI) based on thermodilution cardiac output in patients with complex mixing circulations. We apply this method to patients with a bidirectional cavopulmonary anastomosis (BDCPA). We compare our measured VO2 with a predicted VO2 based on a formula using height and weight.MethodsWe reviewed data based on cardiac catheterization and thermodilution cardiac output in a series of 25 catheterizations in patients with BDCPA. We used this data to measure VO2 and PVRI, and looked for a correlation between the predicted and measured VO2. We also assessed whether any other hemodynamic parameter correlated with measured VO2.ResultsThere was no significant correlation between the predicted and the measured VO2 (correlation coefficient = −0.258, P = .21). We did find a significant correlation in the difference between the measured and predicted VO2 against the measured VO2 such that at a lower measured VO2 the predictive formula tended to overestimate VO2 and at a higher VO2 the formula underestimated VO2 (correlation coefficient = 0.963, P < .0001). Body surface area did not correlate with measured VO2 (correlation coefficient = 0.28, P < .16). Mixed venous oxygen content showed a weak negative correlation with VO2 (correlation coefficient = −0.54, P = .005).ConclusionsAn assessment of PVRI that is based on a predicted VO2 is unreliable in this patient population. No hemodynamic parameter correlated well with VO2. The use of a measured VO2 is necessary in determining PVRI in these patients

    Arithmetical Congruence Preservation: from Finite to Infinite

    Various problems on integers lead to the class of congruence preserving functions on rings, i.e. functions verifying a−ba-b divides f(a)−f(b)f(a)-f(b) for all a,ba,b. We characterized these classes of functions in terms of sums of rational polynomials (taking only integral values) and the function giving the least common multiple of 1,2,
,k1,2,\ldots,k. The tool used to obtain these characterizations is "lifting": if Ï€â€‰âŁ:X→Y\pi\colon X\to Y is a surjective morphism, and ff a function on YY a lifting of ff is a function FF on XX such that π∘F=f∘π\pi\circ F=f\circ\pi. In this paper we relate the finite and infinite notions by proving that the finite case can be lifted to the infinite one. For pp-adic and profinite integers we get similar characterizations via lifting. We also prove that lattices of recognizable subsets of ZZ are stable under inverse image by congruence preserving functions
