    Optically pumped ultraviolet lasing from nitride nanopillars at room temperature

    A vertical cavity structure composing of an in situ grown bottom Al x Ga 1-x N/Al y Ga 1-y N distributed Bragg reflector and a top SiO 2 / HfO 2 dielectric mirror for ultraviolet (UV) emission has been demonstrated. Close-packed nanopillars with diameters of around 500 nm have been achieved by the route of nanosphere lithography combined with inductively-coupled plasma etching. Optically-pumped UV lasing at a wavelength of 343.7 nm (3.608 eV) was observed at room temperature, with a threshold excitation density of 0.52 MW/ cm 2. The mechanism of the lasing action is discussed in detail. Our investigation indicates promising possibilities in nitride-based resonant cavity devices, particularly toward realizing the UV nitride-based vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser. © 2010 American Institute of Physics.published_or_final_versio

    Accurate prediction of heat of formation by combining Hartree-Fock/density functional theory calculation with linear regression correction approach

    A linear regression correction (LRC) approach was developed to account for the electron correlation energy missing in Hartree-Fock (HF) calculation. This method was applied to evaluate the standard heats of formation of 180 small-sized to medium-sized organic molecules at 298.15 K. The descriptors in the LRC scheme are the number of lone-pair electrons, bonding electrons and inner layer electrons in molecules, and the number of unpaired electrons in ground state atoms. It is observed that the large systematic deviations for the calculated heat of formation are reduced drastically, in particular, for the HF results.published_or_final_versio

    Single ionization of helium by 102 eV electron impact: three-dimensional images for electron emission

    Single ionization of helium by 102 eV electron impact has been studied by measuring the momentum vectors of all final-state particles, i.e., two electrons and the He + ion, with an advanced reaction microscope. Fully differential cross sections for asymmetric scattering geometry, which have been normalized to an absolute scale, have been obtained covering a large range of emission angles for the emitted low-energy (E ≤ 15 eV) electron and different scattering angles for the fast electron. Strong electron emission out of the projectile scattering plane is confirmed for electron impact, as was observed before for heavy-ion impact ionization. The data are compared with theoretical predictions from a three-Coulomb wavefunction model, first-order and second-order distorted-wave approaches, as well as a convergent close-coupling calculation

    The spectral variability of FSRQs

    The optical variability of 29 flat spectrum radio quasars in SDSS Stripe 82 region are investigated by using DR7 released multi-epoch data. All FSRQs show variations with overall amplitude ranging from 0.24 mag to 3.46 mag in different sources. About half of FSRQs show a bluer-when-brighter trend, which is commonly observed for blazars. However, only one source shows a redder-when-brighter trend, which implies it is rare in FSRQs.     Constitutive cytoplasmic localization of p21Waf1/Cip1 affects the apoptotic process in monocytic leukaemia

    In the present study, we analysed the expression and localization of p21Waf1/Cip1 in normal and malignant haematopoietic cells. We demonstrate that in normal monocytic cells, protein kinase C (PKC)-induced p21 gene activation, which is nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) independent, results in predominantly cytoplasmic localized p21 protein. In acute monocytic leukaemia (M4, M5), monocytic blasts (N=12) show constitutive cytoplasmic p21 expression in 75% of the cases, while in myeloid leukaemic blasts (N=10), low nuclear and cytoplasmic localization of p21 could be detected, which is also PKC dependent. Constitutive p21 expression in monocytic leukaemia might have important antiapoptotic functions. This is supported by the finding that in U937 cells overexpressing p21, VP16-induced apoptosis is significantly reduced (20.0±0.9 vs 55.8±3.8%, P<0.01, N=5), reflected by a reduced phosphorylation of p38 and JNK. Similarly, AML blasts with high cytoplasmic p21 were less sensitive to VP16-induced apoptosis as compared to AML cases with low or undetectable p21 expression (42.25 vs 12.3%, P<0.01). Moreover, complex formation between p21 and ASK1 could be demonstrated in AML cells, by means of coimmunoprecipitation. In summary, these results indicate that p21 has an antiapoptotic role in monocytic leukaemia, and that p21 expression is regulated in a PKC-dependent and NF-κB independent manner.

    liver-enriched gene 1a and 1b Encode Novel Secretory Proteins Essential for Normal Liver Development in Zebrafish

    liver-enriched gene 1 (leg1) is a liver-enriched gene in zebrafish and encodes a novel protein. Our preliminary data suggested that Leg1 is probably involved in early liver development. However, no detailed characterization of Leg1 has been reported thus far. We undertook both bioinformatic and experimental approaches to study leg1 gene structure and its role in early liver development. We found that Leg1 identifies a new conserved protein superfamily featured by the presence of domain of unknown function 781 (DUF781). There are two copies of leg1 in zebrafish, namely leg1a and leg1b. Both leg1a and leg1b are expressed in the larvae and adult liver with leg1a being the predominant form. Knockdown of Leg1a or Leg1b by their respective morpholinos specifically targeting their 5′-UTR each resulted in a small liver phenotype, demonstrating that both Leg1a and Leg1b are important for early liver development. Meanwhile, we found that injection of leg1-ATGMO, a morpholino which can simultaneously block the translation of Leg1a and Leg1b, caused not only a small liver phenotype but hypoplastic exocrine pancreas and intestinal tube as well. Further examination of leg1-ATGMO morphants with early endoderm markers and early hepatic markers revealed that although depletion of total Leg1 does not alter the hepatic and pancreatic fate of the endoderm cells, it leads to cell cycle arrest that results in growth retardation of liver, exocrine pancreas and intestine. Finally, we proved that Leg1 is a secretory protein. This intrigued us to propose that Leg1 might act as a novel secreted regulator that is essential for liver and other digestive organ development in zebrafish
