    Fast Video Retrieval via the Statistics of Motion

    [[abstract]]Due to the popularity of the Internet and the powerful computing capability of computers, efficient processing/retrieval of multimedia data has become an important issue. In this paper, we propose a fast video retrieval algorithm that bases its search core on the statistics of object motion. The algorithm starts with extracting object motions from a shot and then transform/quantize them into the form of probability distributions. By choosing the shot that has the largest entropy value among the constituent shots of an unknown query video clip, we execute the first stage video search.By comparing two shots with different lengths, their corresponding motion probability distributions are compared by a discrete Bhattacharyya distance which is designed to measure the similarity between any two distribution functions. In the second stage, we add an adjacent shot(either preceding or subsequent) to perform a finer comparison. Experimental results demonstrate that our fast video retrieval algorithm is powerful in terms of accuracy and efficiency.[[fileno]]2030144030026[[department]]電機工程學

    Metastatic Gallbladder Cancer Presenting as a Gingival Tumor and Deep Neck Infection

    Gallbladder cancer has an extremely poor prognosis because it is often diagnosed at an advanced stage. We describe a 63-year-old woman who was treated 4 years previously for gallbladder cancer, with laparoscopic cholecystectomy and secondary hepatectomy after presenting with acute cholecystitis and gallbladder rupture. At her second presentation, she had a left lower gingival tumor and deep neck infection. Incision and drainage and tumor biopsies were performed, and pathology at both sites revealed adenocarcinoma. Positron emission tomography revealed other tumors in the left breast and left lower lung field, which were both proven to be adenocarcinoma by biopsy. The patient's presentation with a metastatic oral tumor was rare. Although the incidence is very low, physicians should consider the possibility of metastatic cancer in a patient with a history of cancer, who presents with new oral tumor or deep neck infection

Conventional method for deriving optimal lot size is by using differential calculus on the cost function with the need to prove optimality first. Recent articles proposed algebraic approach to the solution of classic economic order quantity (EOQ) and EPQ model without reference to the use of derivatives. This note extends them to an EPQ model taking into consideration an imperfect rework of defective items. We demonstrate that the optimal lot size and the expected production-inventory cost for such a realistic EPQ model can be derived without derivatives

    Critical Factors Influencing the Extent of Customer Relationship Management Systems Adoption in Hospitals

    Customer relationship management system (CRMS) is an innovation technology which has dramatic impacts on healthcare quality and customer satisfaction. Although the critical factors for the adoption of information systems have been identified in prior studies, few of them specifically explore the extent of CRMS adoption in hospitals. To fill this gap, this study proposes an integrated model that incorporates both organizational and system related factors as primary determiners the extent of CRMS adoption in hospitals. A series of survey were conducted with three levels of health institutions including medical centers, regional hospitals, and community hospitals in Taiwan. The results indicated that hospital size and complexity have significant influence on the scope of CRMS adoption, and also indicated that hospital size, complexity and compatibility have significant influence on the depth of CRMS adoption in hospitals. These findings provided fruitful implications for both associated academics and practitioners

    A close association of body cell mass loss with disease activity and disability in Chinese patients with rheumatoid arthritis

    OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association of body cell mass loss with disease activity and disability in rheumatoid arthritis patients. INTRODUCTION: Rheumatoid cachexia, defined as the loss of body cell mass, is important but under-recognized and contributes to morbidity and mortality in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. METHODS: One hundred forty-nine rheumatoid arthritis patients and 53 healthy, non-rheumatoid arthritis control subjects underwent anthropometric measurements of body mass index and waist and hip circumferences. Bioelectrical impedance analysis was used to determine the subjects' body compositions, including fat mass, skeletal lean mass, and body cell mass. The disease activity of rheumatoid arthritis was assessed using C-reactive protein serum, the erythrocyte sedimentation rate and the 28-joint disease activity score, while disability was evaluated using a health assessment questionnaire. RESULTS: Rheumatoid arthritis patients had lower waist-to-hip ratio (0.86 ± 0.07 vs. 0.95 ± 0.06; p<0.001) and lower skeletal lean mass indexes (14.44 ±1.52 vs. 15.18 ± 1.35; p = 0.002) than those in the healthy control group. Compared with rheumatoid arthritis patients with higher body cell masses, those with body cell masses lower than median had higher erythrocyte sedimentation rates (40.10 ± 27.33 vs. 25.09 ± 14.85; p<0.001), higher disease activity scores (5.36 ± 3.79 vs. 4.23 ± 1.21; p = 0.022) and greater disability as measured by health assessment questionnaire scores (1.26 ± 0.79 vs. 0.87 ± 0.79; p = 0.004). CONCLUSIONS: The loss of body cell mass is associated with higher disease activity and greater disability in rheumatoid arthritis patients. Body composition determined by bioelectrical impedance analysis can provide valuable information for a rheumatologist to more rapidly recognize rheumatoid cachexia in rheumatoid arthritis patients
