Master's Project (M.Ed.) University of Alaska Fairbanks, 2018Body dissatisfaction and poor body image are issues girls are facing in their preadolescent years. Research is demonstrating that preadolescent girls need intervention programs to help support them with the struggles of body image and self-acceptance. This project uses the literature and established research to provide school counselors with a program to help meet the needs of preadolescent girls struggling with body dissatisfaction and promote body acceptance and body positivity

This thesis investigates the problem of “dead zones” in large bodies of water, specifically in the Chesapeake Bay. Using readily available weather and environmental research from several summer tropical cyclones, this thesis analyzes the possible impact of such storms on the Chesapeake Bay’s ecology and health as a body of water, looking at levels of different nutrients and the growth of algal blooms

The Relationship between Sexual Abuse and Body Image of Members of the United States Military

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of sexual abuse on body image of United States military service members and veterans. Participants completed an online questionnaire (n = 63) that measured their demographics, military status, sexual abuse experiences, combat experiences, relationships during deployment, and body image. Average scores on body image measures from participants who experienced sexual abuse (n = 10) were compared with average scores on body image measures from participants who did not experience sexual abuse (n = 49). Results indicate that there was not a significant difference in body image between service members who have and who have not experienced sexual abuse; however, results approached statistical significance for analyses evaluating whether service members lower in rank were at an increased risk for experiencing more sexual abuse than service members of higher rank. Implications include intervention that focuses on overall military body perception and treatment of alternative effects of sexual abuse. This research contributes to the literature as one of the first studies to assess the relationship between body image and sexual abuse in service members of the U.S. military

Parents’ Perceptions of Hardships Associated With Transitioning Their Child With Disabilities From Early Intervention to the Local Education Agency

Children with disabilities require services that are covered under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act to be successful in school. Early intervention, which is made available to all who qualify, provides services with a team that works directly with the family. However, when the child turns three years of age, the family is transitioned to their local education agency (LEA). The level of support at this point lessens as the school takes over services for the child. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of parents with children with disabilities during the transition from early intervention to their LEA. Data were collected from semi structured interviews with 10 participants who had a child who qualified for and received early intervention services. Coding analysis was conducted to identify themes to answer the research question. Parents expressed how they went from a supportive environment with early intervention to feeling unsupported in the school’s individual education plan (IEP) environment. Results showed how parents felt unprepared and unaware of how the transition process would go. The results also indicated the lack of advocacy that was being done on parents’ behalf for their children. The goal for social change would be for the school’s IEP team to provide similar support to families who are transitioning their children with disabilities. Further goals for social change would be to provide additional education to parents so they feel prepared for the next steps as their children progress in school settings

Breast milk versus Formula: What\u27s the Big deal?

    Get PDF
Breastfeeding versus formula feeding infants has long been a debate and question for parents. Many negative and positive points are brought up for each side of the debate, but an overwhelming majority of evidence has pushed for breastfeeding and its positive benefits for the newborn. However, there is a concern for the incidence of hyperbilirubinemia in infants and whether breastfeeding or formula feeding affects bilirubin levels. The aim of this project is to gather evidence to determine whether or not bilirubin levels in newborns are significantly influenced in the first one to three weeks of life by source of feeding, either breast feeding or formula feeding. Our evidence was gathered from the following accessed databases: Medline, Proquest, and CINAHL. Our findings did suggest that bilirubin levels are higher in breastfed newborns in the first week to three weeks of life, but the positive benefits of breastfeeding out weighted the cons; however, great caution should be taken to monitor the levels of bilirubin in all infants due to the risk of hyperbilirubinemia causing neurological harm, such as brain damage. Therefore, nurses and all medical professionals working with infants should practice effective monitoring of bilirubin levels in newborns to effectively intervene when bilirubin levels reach a dangerous level and provide sufficient education to the parents
