    Reproductive and population parameters of discus fish symphysodon aequifasciatus pellegrin, 1904 (perciformes: Cichlidae) from piagaçu-purus sustainable development reserve (rds-pp), lower purus river, amazonas, Brazil

    The ornamental discus fish Symphysodon aequifasciatus Pellegrin, 1904, is a popular endemic cichlid species from the Amazon basin, however scientific information concerning biology and ecology in its natural habitat is scarce despite its importance on the international aquarium trade. In this study we evaluated reproductive parameters of S. aequifasciatus in natural habitat in Piagaçu-Purus Sustainable Development Reserve (RDS-PP), lower Purus River, Brazilian Amazon. Males are more frequent in the larger size classes and this might be related to the complex breeding behavior known for S. aequifasciatus. Values of L50 for both sexes corresponded to more than 60% of the maximum attained length which may indicate that energy allocation for somatic growth takes longer in S. aequifasciatus than in other species. Average fecundity for female discus was 1490, ranging from 950 to 1892 oocytes and its correlations with standard length and total weight were very low, probably due to the highly compressed discus ́ body shape. Egg size distribution showed four types of patterns, indicating one to four modes besides the reserve oocytes group. Our results indicate that S. aequifasciatus shows total spawning, in the beginning of flooding period, with the peculiar capacity of releasing multiple egg batches as a strategy that potentially enhances reproductive success. © 2010 Sociedade Brasileira de Ictiologia

    Circadian dynamics in measures of cortical excitation and inhibition balance

    Several neuropsychiatric and neurological disorders have recently been characterized as dysfunctions arising from a ‘final common pathway’ of imbalanced excitation to inhibition within cortical networks. How the regulation of a cortical E/I ratio is affected by sleep and the circadian rhythm however, remains to be established. Here we addressed this issue through the analyses of TMS-evoked responses recorded over a 29h sleep deprivation protocol conducted in young and healthy volunteers. Spectral analyses of TMS-evoked responses in frontal cortex revealed non-linear changes in gamma band evoked oscillations, compatible with an influence of circadian timing on inhibitory interneuron activity. In silico inferences of cell-to-cell excitatory and inhibitory connectivity and GABA/Glutamate receptor time constant based on neural mass modeling within the Dynamic causal modeling framework, further suggested excitation/inhibition balance was under a strong circadian influence. These results indicate that circadian changes in EEG spectral properties, in measure of excitatory/inhibitory connectivity and in GABA/glutamate receptor function could support the maintenance of cognitive performance during a normal waking day, but also during overnight wakefulness. More generally, these findings demonstrate a slow daily regulation of cortical excitation/inhibition balance, which depends on circadian-timing and prior sleep-wake history

    A fast ℓ1-solver and its applications to robust face recognition

    In this paper we apply a recently proposed Lagrange Dual Method (LDM) to design a new Sparse Representation-based Classification (LDM-SRC) algorithm for robust face recognition problem. The proposed approach improves the efficiency of the SRC algorithm significantly. The proposed algorithm has the following advantages: (1) it employs the LDM ℓ1-solver to find solution of theℓ1-norm minimization problem, which is much faster than other state-of-the-art ℓ1-solvers, e.g. ℓ1-magic and ℓ1−ℓs . (2) The LDM ℓ1-solver utilizes a new Lagrange-dual reformulation of the original ℓ1-norm minimization problem, not only reducing the problem size when the dimension of training image data is much less than the number of training samples, but also making the dual problem become smooth and convex. Therefore it converts the non-smooth ℓ1-norm minimization problem into a sequence of smooth optimization problems. (3) The LDM-SRC algorithm can maintain good recognition accuracy whilst reducing the computational time dramatically. Experimental results are presented on some benchmark face databases
