Faculty’s Experiences Teaching English Language Learners in Higher Education

    Get PDF
Conducted in a large size four-year state university, the purpose of this qualitative study was to learn how faculty of multiple disciplines examined and made meaning of their instructional practices and decisions when teaching ELL students, how they modified their instruction to meet the needs of ELLs, and what they saw as areas of struggle when working with this student population. Critical pedagogy (Freire, 1970) was used as a theoretical framework to further investigate the complex nature of how higher education faculty make meaning of their instructional experiences when teaching ELLs within the hierarchical structures inherent in higher education and society at large. Hence, the analyses and discussions were structured through the lens of a Freirean critical pedagogy which allowed me to reveal the complexity of higher education faculty’s teaching experiences when teaching ELLs and how their instructional decisions are rooted within these hierarchal institutional structures. The findings revealed that all participant faculty were genuinely empathetic towards their ELL students’ level of English proficiency and how it affected their learning outcomes, and they all expressed interest in attempting to modify their instruction to meet the needs of these students. However, they reported real concerns and frustrations due to their lack of knowledge, expertise, adequate preparation, and especially institutional support to address such needs. The prospect of having to attend to yet another task, in addition to already existing responsibilities, created tension and exacerbated already existing challenges, as faculty attempted to navigate their teaching load and academic obligations while attending to their ELL students’ linguistic needs as a catalyst for their learning outcomes and academic success

Study examines the problem of development of novel nanomaterials serving for boron 10B isotope delivery agents in Boron-Neutron-Capture-Therapy (BNCT). For this purpose, there is done a mini-review on Nano powder boron compounds especially prospective for BNCT; magnetic Nano carriers of the therapeutically active agents in general, delivery of which can be controlled by using of an external magnetic field; as well as methods of synthesis of nanocomposites comprising components of both kinds. Based on recent literature analysis, boron nitride and boron carbide Nano powders doped with ferromagnetic iron oxide nanoclusters are recommended for BNCT as effective delivery agents with good biocompatibility

Efficiency of the centrifugally induced curvature drift instability in AGN winds

For studying how the field lines are twisting nearby the light cylinder surface, which provides the free motion of AGN winds through the mentioned area, the investigation of the centrifugally driven curvature drift instability is presented. Studying the dynamics of the relativistic MHD flow close to the light cylinder surface, by applying a single particle approach based on the centrifugal acceleration, the dispersion relation of the instability is derived and analytically solved. Considering the typical values of AGN winds, it is shown that the time scale of the curvature drift instability is much less than the accretion process time scale, indicating that the present instability is very efficient and might strongly influence processes in AGN plasmas.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure

Objective: This study was conceived to evaluate the essential fatty acids, secondary metabolite, antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of Olea europaea ssp. oleaster fruits pulp methanolic extract. Methods: Analysis of the lipid content from unexploited Olea europaea ssp. oleaster pulp was carried out using gas chromatography. The antioxidant activity was evaluated by DPPH radical scavenging. The antimicrobial activity was also tested against seven pathogenic bacteria, two fungal species and one yeast strain using two methods. Results: The obtained results showed that the major components of fatty acids were oleic acid (77.4%) and elaidic acid (17.58%). Moreover, the tested extract was rich in phenol (84.04±0.01 mg GAE/g DW) than in flavonoids (60.41±0.02 mg RE/g DW). In addition, it showed puissant antioxidant (IC50 = 28±0.01 ”g/mL), antibacterial and antifungal activities. The inhibition zones diameters and the minimum inhibition concentration values for tested microorganisms were in the range of 13-18 mm and 3.125-25 mg/mL, respectively. Conclusion: This study shows that Olea europaea ssp. oleaster fruit pulp could be developed into ingredients for use in foods as the natural antioxidant and antimicrobial agent

Performance of Caching in Wireless Small Cell Networks

    Get PDF
In this paper, a fifth generation (5G) radio cellular system performance will be discussed based on a new architecture developed using small base stations (SBSs). This strategy takes into account SBS caching capability to alleviate the backhaul load and consequently satisfy users’ requests. Therefore, the effectiveness of future 5G networks will be maximized by offering good coverage with low latency. This is a new caching paradigm called proactive caching, which could be useful for the implementation in big data. Significant gains in reducing traffic on backhaul links and user satisfaction will be ensured. Customers are served by picking the content from local caches, stochastically distributed over the plane, as a formerly limited backhaul. Success probability expressions are obtained as a function of the signal-to-interference and noiseratio (SINR) and SBS density

Cellulitis is a frequent soft tissue and skin infection. The lower limbs are affected in 70 to 80% of cases. Cellulitis in aged persons is not yet well described in literature. A retrospective descriptive study conducted in the Internal Medicine Department of Sahloul hospital in Sousse in Tunisia. It included patients whose age was up to 65 years old admitted into hospital for cellulitis of the legs, the arms or the face. One hundred fifty eight patients with a mean age of 73 years old (range: 65 to 94 years old) were included. Female to male sex ratio was 0.68. Among them, we noted diabetes mellitus in 81 cases (50.6%). The infection was located in the lower limbs in 155 cases (98%), in the face in two cases (1.3%) and in the upper limb in one case (0.7%). Twenty one patients (13.3%) presented with severe cellulitis and one presented with necrotizing fasciitis. All patients received intra venous antibiotic therapy. Surgical treatment was indicated in 14 cases. Cefazolin was prescribed in 77 cases (48%). Favorable evolution was noted in 144 patients (91.1%). Forty four patients (27.8%) received prophylactic antibiotics. Prevention of skin and soft tissue infection is a crucial step to preserve health in aged persons. Keywords: Cellulitis, aged person, diabetes, necrotizing fasciitis, antibiotic, surger

Les problÚmes de traduction dans le PISA : les limites de la standardisation des tests de compréhension

    Get PDF
For international school assessments, the problems of the translation of the test material, are an important methodological challenge in order to avoid any serious objection to their aim to compare, despite the differences in languages, the skill levels of students. It’s the reason why the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), often considered as the current reference for this type of evaluation, develops a very solid reflection concerning its own translation processes. However, a detailed analysis of different versions (in English, Arabic, Spanish, French and Portuguese) of a PISA exercise in the field of reading literacy can uncover several problems related to lexical, syntactic or discursive choices and consider their consequences. If any translation can indeed be questionable, this critical work, that was done by taking into account the very principles adopted by the PISA, will enable us not only to discuss the limits of the results obtained and their comparability, but will also question a certain way of thinking the language and the reading in this international assessment of student literacy

The rheumatoid polyarthritis is the most frequent chronic polyarthritis. It affects essentially the woman between 40 and 60 years. Rheumatic subcutaneous nodules and tenosynovitis are usually associated with seropositive symptomatic rheumatoid polyarthritis. It is, however, rare that they constitute the essential clinical expression of the disease. In this case, it makes dispute another exceptional form of rheumatoid arthritis such as rheumatoid nodulosis. A 60-year-old woman was hospitalized for tumefaction of the dorsal face of the right hand evolving two months before. The clinical examination found subcutaneous nodules from which the exploration ended in rheumatoid nodules with tenosynovitis. The evolution after four years was favourable under corticosteroid therapy, methotrexate, and colchicine
