Can Ambient Scent Enhance the Nightlife Experience?
Ever since smoking was prohibited in restaurants, bars, and clubs, undesirable smells that were previously masked by cigarette smoke became noticeable. This opens up opportunities to improve the dance club environment by introducing pleasant ambient scents that mask the unwanted odors and to allow competing clubs to differentiate themselves. A field study was conducted at three dance clubs using a 3 × 3 Latin square design with pre- and post-measurements of no-scent control conditions. The three scents tested were orange, seawater, and peppermint. These scents were shown to enhance dancing activity and to improve the evaluation of the evening, the evaluation of the music, and the mood of the visitors over no added scent. However, no significant differences were found between the three scents
Brand Suicide? Memory and Liking of Negative Brand Names
Negative brand names are surprisingly common in the marketplace (e.g., Poison perfume; Hell pizza, and Monster energy drink), yet their effects on consumer behavior are currently unknown. Three studies investigated the effects of negative brand name valence on brand name memory and liking of a branded product. Study 1 demonstrates that relative to nonnegative brand names, negative brand names and their associated logos are better recognised. Studies 2 and 3 demonstrate that negative valence of a brand name tends to have a detrimental influence on product evaluation with evaluations worsening as negative valence increases. However, evaluation is also dependent on brand name arousal, with high arousal brand names resulting in more positive evaluations, such that moderately negative brand names are equally as attractive as some non-negative brand names. Study 3 shows evidence for affective habituation, whereby the effects of negative valence reduce with repeated exposures to some classes of negative brand name
On the Importance of Complaint Handling Design : A Multi-Level Analysis of the Impact in Specific Complaint Situations
Given the large investments required for high-quality complaint handling design,
managers need practical guidance in understanding its actual importance for their
particular company. However, while prior research emphasizes the general relevance
of complaint handling design, it fails to provide a more differentiated perspective on
this interesting issue. This study, which is based on an integrative multi-level
framework and a dyadic dataset, addresses this important gap in research. Results
indicate that the impact of a company’s complaint handling design varies significantly
depending on the characteristics of the complaining customers with which the firm has
to deal. Further, this paper shows that, contingent on these characteristics, a company’s
complaint handling design can shape complainants’ fairness perceptions either
considerably or only slightly. Overall, findings suggest that companies should apply
an adaptive approach to complaint handling to avoid misallocation of attention,
energy, and resources
Using fear appeals in warning labels to promote responsible gambling among VLT players: the key role of depth of information processing.
Video lottery terminals (VLT) are a highly lucrative gambling format, but at the same time they are among the most hazardous. Previous research has shown that threatening warnings may be an appropriate approach for promoting protective behavior. The present study explores the potential benefits of threatening warnings in the fight against compulsive gambling. A 4 x 2 factorial design experiment was used to test our model based on both Elaboration Likelihood Model and Protection Motivation Theory. 258 VLT adult players (58% males, 42% females) with various degrees of problem gambling were exposed to three threat levels (plus a control condition) from two different sources (i.e., either a medical source or a source related to the provider of VLT's). Our results show that both higher threat warnings and the medical source of warnings enhance Depth of Information Processing. It was also found that Depth of Information Processing affects positively attitude change and compliance intentions. The theoretical and managerial implications are discussed
