    Radon Dose Determination and Radiological Risk in Some Mexican Caves with CR-39 Detectors

    Radon (222Rn) is a radioactive gas, from the 238U decay chain, that contributes in large part of the natural radiation dose to which humans are exposed. Radon is the second cause of lung cancer after tobacco. The US-EPA considers a concentration of 148 Bq/m3 for homes and 400 Bq/m3 for workplaces as the reference level. Caves are closed spaces where 222Rn, which emanates from the surrounding minerals and rocks, can accumulate and reaches large concentrations that can represent a health risk for the guides, speleologists and visitors who spend time in these spaces. This work uses the previously recorded radon concentrations in 8 caves in Mexico and calculates the average dose range and the average annual dose for each of them with the “Wise” public domain program (http://www.wise-uranium.org/rdcrn.html) to determine the level of radiological risk with 2,000 1,000 and 500 working hours per year. Karmidas cave had the highest average 222Rn concentration with 27,633.3 Bq/m3 and for 2,000 working hours per year an average annual dose rate of 347.1 mSv/y. Los Riscos cave had the lowest average concentration with 384.7 Bq/m3 and for 2,000 working hours per year an average annual dose rate of 4.832 mSv/y. These results show that all the caves studied present values,with 2,000 working hours per year, that exceed 3 mSv/y for workplaces and must be considered by the people who work in these places. A casual tourist visiting the caves does not present any radiological risk, while guides and speleologists should consider it

    A Case of Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children Mimicking Acute Appendicitis in a COVID-19 Pandemic Area.

    The outbreak of the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) began in Wuhan, China and spread rapidly throughout the world. As of now, there have been numerous reports demonstrating clinical, radiological and pathological findings in adults. In children, the disease has essentially been seen as mild and self-limiting. However, more recently, children have been presenting with findings reminiscent of Kawasaki\u27s disease. And secondary to this, the benign nature of COVID-19 disease in children is beginning to be challenged. This phenomenon is now referred to as multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C). Further understanding the clinical course in MIS-C and its temporal association with coronavirus disease 2019 will be paramount for treatment and public health decision making. This correspondence describes a case of MIS-C with gastrointestinal manifestations mimicking acute appendicitis in a child presenting from a COVID-19 endemic area

    Do slower life history strategies reduce sociodemographic sex differences?

    This study examines the relations between sociodemographic sex differences and life history strategies in the populations of Mexican States. Sex differences in anatomy and behavior was measured with traits such as educational achievement, mortality, and morbidity. The data were obtained from the Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía (INEGI) and sampled from thirty-one Mexican states and the Federal District (N = 32). An extension analysis was performed selecting only the sex ratio variables that had a correlation with the slow Life History factor greater than or equal to an absolute value of .25. A unit-weighted sex ratio factor was created using these variables. Across 32 Mexican states, the correlation between latent slow life history and sex ratio was .57 (p .05). These results are consistent with our hypothesis that slower life histories favor reduced sexual dimorphism in physiology and behavior among human subnational populations. The results of the study further understanding of variations in population sex differences, male-biased behaviors toward sexual equality, and the differences among subnational (regional) populations within the United States of Mexico.   DOI:10.2458/azu_jmmss_v6i1_chavarria_miner

    Extreme Altitude Search and Rescue Helicopter

    The goal of this design was to develop an extreme altitude rescue helicopter capable of retrieving hikers stranded on top of Mount Everest. Using the Eurocopter AS350 as a baseline, a conceptual model was produced that is fully capable of hovering and delivering forward flight at the desired altitude of 8,848 meters. Combined blade element momentum theory, proper airfoil selection, and forward flight calculations were utilized in order to optimize the rotor for the given flight conditions on top of Mount Everest. Conceptual fluid dynamics and CAD modeling aided in the process of visually designing the fuselage and rotor. Not only are these visual aids available, but they also produced data on how the fuselage and rotor will react to the environment around them. Other analyses were introduced in order to accurately calculate the economic feasibility, the reliability, and the efficiency of the overall system

    Exploring The Roles of Nucleobase Desolvation and Shape Complementarity During The Misreplication of O6-Methylguanine

    O6-methylguanine is a miscoding DNA lesion arising from the alkylation of guanine. This report uses the bacteriophage T4 DNA polymerase as a model to probe the roles hydrogen-bonding interactions, shape/size, and nucleobase desolvation during the replication of this miscoding lesion. This was accomplished by using transient kinetic techniques to monitor the kinetic parameters for incorporating and extending natural and non-natural nucleotides. In general, the efficiency of nucleotide incorporation does not depend on the hydrogen-bonding potential of the incoming nucleotide. Instead, nucleobase hydrophobicity and shape complementarity appear to be the preeminent factors controlling nucleotide incorporation. In addition, shape complementarity plays a large role in controlling the extension of various mispairs containing O6-methylguanine. This is evident as the rate constants for extension correlate with proper interglycosyl distances and symmetry between the base angles of the formed mispair. Base pairs not conforming to an acceptable geometry within the polymerase’s active site are refractory to elongation and are processed via exonuclease proofreading. The collective data set encompassing nucleotide incorporation, extension, and excision is used to generate a model accounting for the mutagenic potential of O6-methylguanine observed in vivo. In addition, kinetic studies monitoring the incorporation and extension of non-natural nucleotides identified an analog that displays high selectivity for incorporation opposite O6-methylguanine compared to unmodified purines. The unusual selectivity of this analog for replicating damaged DNA provides a novel biochemical tool to study translesion DNA synthesis

    Inhomogeneous turbulence in the vicinity of a large scale coherent vortex

    We study the statistics of turbulent velocity fluctuations in the neighbourhood of a strong large scale vortex at very large Reynolds number. At each distance from the vortex core, we observe that the velocity spectrum has a power law ``inertial range'' of scales and that intermittency -- defined as the variation of the probability density function (PDF) of velocity increments as the length of the increment is varied -- is also present. We show that the spectrum scaling exponents and intermittency characteristics vary with the distance to the vortex. They are also influenced by the large scale dynamics of the vortex.Comment: submitted to europhys lett, 6 pages, 5 figure
