The architecture of predator-prey and the relationship between complexity and stability

    Get PDF
Theoretical studies predict that the stability of an ecosystem is negatively correlated with its complexity, measured by the number of interacting species. On the other hand, empirical evidence indicates that food webs are highly interconnected. In this manuscript we present results on the stability two-level predator-prey food webs. We analyzed exhaustively all possible topologies of connections among species. Our findings show that those food webs fall into two classes with clearly distinct stability properties. In one of them stability is negatively correlated with complexity, and in the other group stability is positively correlated. For a positive relationship our results reveals highly structured food webs. The positive or negative relationship is related only to the topological structure of the food web. It is independent of the number of connections, strengths of predator-prey interactions or number of species. We review empirical evidence that corroborates our results

On the probabilistic approach for Gaussian Berezin integrals

We present a novel approach to Gaussian Berezin correlation functions. A formula well known in the literature expresses these quantities in terms of submatrices of the inverse matrix appearing in the Gaussian action. By using a recently proposed method to calculate Berezin integrals as an expectation of suitable functionals of Poisson processes, we obtain an alternative formula which allows one to skip the calculation of the inverse of the matrix. This formula, previously derived using different approaches (in particular by means of the Jacobi identity for the compound matrices), has computational advantages which grow rapidly with the dimension of the Grassmann algebra and the order of correlation. By using this alternative formula, we establish a mapping between two fermionic systems, not necessarily Gaussian, with short and long range interaction, respectively

How Common is the Common Law? Some Differences and Similarities in British and American Superior Court Decisions

    Get PDF
American law and English law belong to the same legal tradition, the common law, characterized by a case-law system based on judicial decisions and the rule of precedent. There are indeed common features between the American and the English common law systems. There is a common language with close expressions, but also similar concepts, principles and procedures. But how common are in fact the American and British legal systems? This paper aims at finding some possible answers through a legal and linguistic analysis of some US and UK superior court decisions

Fredholm's Minors of Arbitrary Order: Their Representations as a Determinant of Resolvents and in Terms of Free Fermions and an Explicit Formula for Their Functional Derivative

We study the Fredholm minors associated with a Fredholm equation of the second type. We present a couple of new linear recursion relations involving the nnth and n−1n-1th minors, whose solution is a representation of the nnth minor as an n×nn\times n determinant of resolvents. The latter is given a simple interpretation in terms of a path integral over non-interacting fermions. We also provide an explicit formula for the functional derivative of a Fredholm minor of order nn with respect to the kernel. Our formula is a linear combination of the nnth and the n±1n\pm 1th minors.Comment: 17 pages, Latex, no figures connection to supplementary compound matrices mentioned, references added, typos correcte

Spontaneous emergence of spatial patterns ina a predator-prey model

We present studies for an individual based model of three interacting populations whose individuals are mobile in a 2D-lattice. We focus on the pattern formation in the spatial distributions of the populations. Also relevant is the relationship between pattern formation and features of the populations' time series. Our model displays travelling waves solutions, clustering and uniform distributions, all related to the parameters values. We also observed that the regeneration rate, the parameter associated to the primary level of trophic chain, the plants, regulated the presence of predators, as well as the type of spatial configuration.Comment: 17 pages and 15 figure

Quelle place occupe l’anglais juridique dans les offres de stages proposés par les cabinets d’avocats en Angleterre et au pays de Galles ?

    Get PDF
This paper analyses online documents posted by English solicitors’ law firms to recruit law and non law undergraduates and graduates for work placement schemes and training contracts. Its aim is to determine the place devoted to legal English by studying the terms linked to the required training undergone by aspiring solicitors, their working environment and practices. Moreover, the author argues that the study of this specialised language can be integrated into the linguistic syllabus followed by French law students insomuch as it raises their awareness of the main differences between English and French legal studies and it widens their professional horizons
