Room temperature Peierls distortion in small radius nanotubes
By means of {\it ab initio} simulations, we investigate the phonon band
structure and electron-phonon coupling in small 4-\AA diameter nanotubes. We
show that both the C(5,0) and C(3,3) tubes undergo above room temperature a
Peierls transition mediated by an acoustical long-wavelength and an optical
phonons respectively. In the armchair geometry, we verify that the
electron-phonon coupling parameter originates mainly from phonons at
and is strongly enhanced when the diameter decreases. These results

The "good'' Boussinesq equation: long-time asymptotics
We consider the initial-value problem for the ``good'' Boussinesq equation on
the line. Using inverse scattering techniques, the solution can be expressed in
terms of the solution of a -matrix Riemann-Hilbert problem. We
establish formulas for the long-time asymptotics of the solution by performing
a Deift-Zhou steepest descent analysis of a regularized version of this

Independent and interactive effects of thermal stress and mental fatigue on manual dexterity
Many occupations and sports require high levels of manual dexterity under thermal stress and mental fatigue. Yet, multistressor studies remain scarce. We quantified the interactive effects of thermal stress and mental fatigue on manual dexterity. Seven males (21.1 \ub1 1.3 yr) underwent six separate 60-min trials characterized by a combination of three air temperatures (hot, 37C; neutral, 21C; cold, 7C) and two mental fatigue states (MF, mental fatigue induced by a 35-min cognitive battery; no-MF, no mental fatigue). Participants performed complex (O'Connor test) and simple (hand-tool test) manual tasks pre- and posttrial to determine stressor-induced performance changes. We monitored participants' rectal temperature and hand skin temperature (Thand) continuously and assessed the reaction time (handclick test) and subjective mental fatigue (5-point scale). Thermal stress (P < 0.0001), but not mental fatigue (P = 0.290), modulated Thand (heat, +3.3C [95% CI: +0.2, +6.5]; cold, 7.5C [10.7, 4.4]). Mental fatigue (P = 0.021), but not thermal stress (P = 0.646), slowed the reaction time (10%) and increased subjective fatigue. Thermal stress and mental fatigue had an interactive effect on the complex manual task (P = 0.040), with cold-no-MF decreasing the performance by 22% [39, 5], whereas neutral-MF, cold-MF, and heat-MF by 36% [53, 19], 34% [52, 17], and 36% [53, 19], respectively. Only mental fatigue decreased the performance in the simple manual task (30% [43, 16] across all thermal conditions; P = 0.002). Cold stress-induced impairments in complex manipulation increase with mental fatigue; yet combined stressors' effects are no greater than those of mental fatigue alone, which also impairs simple manipulation. Mental fatigue poses a greater challenge to manual dexterity than thermal stress
Identification of Electron Donor States in N-doped Carbon Nanotubes
Nitrogen doped carbon nanotubes have been synthesized using pyrolysis and
characterized by Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy and transmission electron
microscopy. The doped nanotubes are all metallic and exhibit strong electron
donor states near the Fermi level. Using tight-binding and ab initio
calculations, we observe that pyridine-like N structures are responsible for
the metallic behavior and the prominent features near the Fermi level. These
electron rich structures are the first example of n-type nanotubes, which could

Determination of the Intershell Conductance in Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes
We report on the intershell electron transport in multiwalled carbon
nanotubes (MWNT). To do this, local and nonlocal four-point measurements are
used to study the current path through the different shells of a MWNT. For
short electrode separations 1 m the current mainly flows
through the two outer shells, described by a resistive transmission line with
an intershell conductance per length of ~(10 k\Omega)^{-1}/m. The
intershell transport is tunnel-type and the transmission is consistent with the
estimate based on the overlap between -orbitals of neighboring shells.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
On the Number of Unbordered Factors
We illustrate a general technique for enumerating factors of k-automatic
sequences by proving a conjecture on the number f(n) of unbordered factors of
the Thue-Morse sequence. We show that f(n) = 4 and that f(n) = n
infinitely often. We also give examples of automatic sequences having exactly 2
unbordered factors of every length
Insights into the architecture and stoichiometry of Escherichia coli PepA•DNA complexes involved in transcriptional control and site-specific DNA recombination by atomic force microscopy
Multifunctional Aminopeptidase A (PepA) from Escherichia coli is involved in the control of two distinct DNA transaction processes: transcriptional repression of the carAB operon, encoding carbamoyl phosphate synthase and site-specific resolution of ColE1-type plasmid multimers. Both processes require communication at a distance along a DNA molecule and PepA is the major structural component of the nucleoprotein complexes that underlie this communication. Atomic Force Microscopy was used to analyze the architecture of PepA·carAB and PepA·cer site complexes. Contour length measurements, bending angle analyses and volume determinations demonstrate that the carP1 operator is foreshortened by ∼235 bp through wrapping around one PepA hexamer. The highly deformed part of the operator extends from slightly upstream of the –35 hexamer of the carP1 promoter to just downstream of the IHF-binding site, and comprises the binding sites for the PurR and RutR transcriptional regulators. This extreme remodeling of the carP1 control region provides a straightforward explanation for the strict requirement of PepA in the establishment of pyrimidine and purine-specific repression of carAB transcription. We further provide a direct physical proof that PepA is able to synapse two cer sites in direct repeat in a large interwrapped nucleoprotein complex, likely comprising two PepA hexamers
Issues for the Next Generation of Galaxy Surveys
I argue that the weight of the available evidence favours the conclusions
that galaxies are unbiased tracers of mass, the mean mass density (excluding a
cosmological constant or its equivalent) is less than the critical Einstein-de
Sitter value, and an isocurvature model for structure formation offers a viable
and arguably attractive model for the early assembly of galaxies. If valid
these conclusions complicate our work of adding structure formation to the
standard model for cosmology, but it seems sensible to pay attention to
