Alternative position sensing principles include using integrated optical waveguides [2] or varying thermal conductance [3]. Lantz et al demonstrated a thermal displacement sensor achieving nanometre resolution on a 100mm range. However a multi-mask production process and manual assembly were needed to fabricate this displacement sensor. In this work we present a 1-DOF thermal displacement sensor integrated with an actuated stage, and its experimental characterization.     Testing Physical and Mathematical Criteria in a New Meandering Autocorrelation Function

    An alternative formulation for the low wind speed-meandering autocorrelation function is presented. Employing distinct theoretical criteria, this mathematical formulation, from a physical point of view, is validated. This expression for the meandering autocorrelation function reproduces well-observed wind-meandering data measured in a micrometeorological site located in a pampa ecosystem area (South Brazil). The comparison shows that the alternative relation for the meandering autocorrelation function is suitable to provide meandering characteristic parameters. Employing MacLaurin’s series expansion of a lateral dispersion parameter that represents cases in which turbulence and oscillatory movements associated to the meandering events coexist, a new formulation for the turbulence/meandering dissipation rate has been presented

    The serine protease CAP1/Prss8 is crucial for skin barrier function, lung alveolar fluid clearance and has been unveiled as diagnostic marker for specific cancer types. Here, we show that a constitutive knockout of CAP1/Prss8 leads to embryonic lethality. These embryos presented no specific defects, but it is during this period, and in particular at E13.5, that wildtype placentas show an increased expression of CAP1/Prss8, thus suggesting a placental defect in the knockout situation. The placentas of knockout embryos exhibited significantly reduced vascular development and incomplete cellular maturation. In contrary, epiblast-specific deletion of CAP1/Prss8 allowed development until birth. These CAP1/Prss8-deficient newborns presented abnormal epidermis, and died soon after birth due to impaired skin function. We thus conclude that a late placental insufficiency might be the primary cause of embryonic lethality in CAP1/Prss8 knockouts.     A single-mask thermal displacement sensor in MEMS

    This work presents a MEMS displacement sensor based on the conductive heat transfer of a resistively heated silicon structure towards an actuated stage parallel to the structure. This differential sensor can be easily incorporated into a silicon-on-insulator-based process, and fabricated within the same mask as electrostatic actuators and flexure-based stages. We discuss a lumped capacitance model to optimize the sensor sensitivity as a function of the doping concentration, the operating temperature, the heater length and width. We demonstrate various sensor designs. The typical sensor resolution is 2 nm within a bandwidth of 25 Hz at a full scale range of 110 μm

    Effects of erythropoietin therapy on the lipid profile in end-stage renal failure. To evaluate the effects of erythropoietin (EPO) therapy on the lipid profile in end-stage renal failure, we undertook a prospective study in patients on both hemodialysis (HD) and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). One hundred and twelve patients (81 HD, 31 CAPD) were enrolled into the study. Lipid parameters [that is, total cholesterol and the LDL and HDL subfractions, triglycerides, lipoprotein (a), apoproteins A and B], full blood count, iron studies, B12, folate, blood urea, aluminium and serum parathyroid hormone were measured prior to commencement of EPO therapy. Ninety-five patients were reassessed 5.2 ± 0.3 (mean ± SEM) months later and 53 patients underwent a further assessment 13.1 ± 0.6 months after the commencement of EPO, giving an overall follow-up of 10.0 ± 0.6 months in 95 patients. As expected, EPO treatment was associated with an increase in hemoglobin (7.7 ± 0.1 vs. 9.9 ± 0.2 g/dl; P < 0.001) and a decrease in ferritin (687 ± 99 vs. 399 ± 69 µg/liter; P < 0.01). A significant fall in total cholesterol occurred (5.8 ± 0.1 vs. 5.4 ± 0.2 mmol/liter; P < 0.05) in association with a fall in apoprotein B (1.15 ± 0.04 vs. 1.04 ± 0.06; P < 0.05) and serum triglycerides (2.26 ± 0.14 vs. 1.99 ± 0.21; P < 0.05) during the course of the study. Other lipid parameters did not change, although there was a trend towards improvement. These changes correlated with the increase in Hb (P < 0.001 in each case), and the reduction in ferritin for total cholesterol (P < 0.02), LDL cholesterol (P < 0.03), and to a lesser extent apoprotein B (P < 0.07). No difference was observed in patients using maintenance HD or CAPD, and similar trends were observed in male and female patients. Improvements in the lipid profile occurred independently of the time on dialysis prior to the commencement of EPO. We conclude that EPO treatment is associated with alterations in the lipid profile which may suggest a long-term improvement in the vascular morbidity of chronic renal failure. The causes of the improved lipids are not addressed by this study and may be equally due to a direct or secondary benefit of EPO therapy

    On the peak radio and X-ray emission from neutron star and black hole candidate X-ray transients

    We have compiled and analysed reports from the literature of (quasi-)simultaneous observations of X-ray transients at radio and X-ray wavelengths and compared them with each other and with more unusual radio-bright sources such as Cygnus X-3, GRS 1915+105 and Circinus X-1. There exists a significant (>97% likelihood) positive (rank) correlation between the peak X-ray flux P_X and radio flux density P_R for the black hole candidate (BHC) systems, and a marginally significant positive (rank) correlation for the neutron star (NS) systems. This is further evidence for a coupling between accretion and outflows in X-ray binary systems, in this case implying a relation between peak disc-accretion-rate and the number of synchroton-emitting electrons ejected. However, we also show that the distribution of `radio loudness', P_R/P_X, is significantly different for the two samples, in the sense that the BHCs generally have a higher ratio of P_R/P_X. The origin of this discrepancy is uncertain, but probably reflects differences in the energetics and/or radiative efficiency of flows around the neutron stars and black holes; we briefly discuss some of these possibilities. We conclude that these data point to the formation of a mildly relativistic jet whose luminosity is a function of the accretion rate, in the majority, if not all, of X-ray transient outbursts, but whose relation to the observed X-ray emission is dependent on the nature of the accreting compact object.     Anisotropic Conformal Infinity

    We generalize Penrose's notion of conformal infinity of spacetime, to situations with anisotropic scaling. This is relevant not only for Lifshitz-type anisotropic gravity models, but also in standard general relativity and string theory, for spacetimes exhibiting a natural asymptotic anisotropy. Examples include the Lifshitz and Schrodinger spaces (proposed as AdS/CFT duals of nonrelativistic field theories), warped AdS_3, and the near-horizon extreme Kerr geometry. The anisotropic conformal boundary appears crucial for resolving puzzles of holographic renormalization in such spacetimes.Comment: 11 page
