An anotated list of the Curculionoidea (Coleoptera) of Dominica (excluding Scolytinae and Platypodidae)

Curculionoidea (Coleoptera) of the West Indian island of Dominica are composed of 111 genera and 214 species and subspecies. Some of the species listed are morphospecies, or are known to be undescribed, but all are identified at least to genus. Previously the fauna was recorded as 31 species. Numbers presented herein represent a seven-fold increase in species diversity. Furthermore, the widespread nature of many species demonstrates that the supposedly endemic faunas of many West Indian islands may be based on collecting biases or a lack of people capable of providing species level identifications

Measuring the Effectiveness of Research Grant Getting

To a very large extent, the national and international reputation of major research universities depends upon their research performance. That explains why competition is so fierce among them to get as much as they can from the three Canadian government major granting agencies. This study demonstrates how performance indicators were developed to measure the effectiveness of research grant getting among eleven Canadian universities. It shows how amount of money received, size of teaching staff, and disciplinary characteristics were standardized to yield objective disciplinary and institutional rankings.La réputation nationale et internationale des principales universités où il se fait beaucoup de recherche dépend dans une très large mesure de leur rendement dans ce domaine .C'est pourquoi ces institutions mènent une lutte serrée pour obtenir le maximum de subventions des trois principaux organismes subventionnaires du gouvernement canadien. L'article porte sur l'approche utilisée pour mesurer, à l'aide des indices de rendement, l'efficacité des subventions de recherche réparties entre onze universités canadiennes. Differentiation of Schistosoma haematobium from related schistosomes by PCR amplifying an inter-repeat sequence.

Schistosoma haematobium infects nearly 150 million people, primarily in Africa, and is transmitted by select species of local bulinid snails. These snails can host other related trematode species as well, so that effective detection and monitoring of snails infected with S. haematobium requires a successful differentiation between S. haematobium and any closely related schistosome species. To enable differential detection of S. haematobium DNA by simple polymerase chain reaction (PCR), we designed and tested primer pairs from numerous newly identified Schistosoma DNA repeat sequences. However, all pairs tested were found unsuitable for this purpose. Differentiation of S. haematobium from S. bovis, S. mattheei, S. curassoni, and S. intercalatum (but not from S. margrebowiei) was ultimately accomplished by PCR using one primer from a newly identified repeat, Sh110, and a second primer from a known schistosomal splice-leader sequence. For evaluation of residual S. haematobium transmission after control interventions, this differentiation tool will enable accurate monitoring of infected snails in areas where S. haematobium is sympatric with the most prevalent other schistosome species

IDENTIFYING BUSINESS VALUE LINKAGES FOR INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY: AN EXPLORATORY APPLICATION TO TREASURY WORKSTATIONS

Pervasive and costly automation of information handling activities continues to put pressure on senior managers to quantify the contributions of information technology IT to the strategic goals of the firm. This paper proposes the use of "business value linkage BVL" correlation tests to provide evidence that investments in IT create the desired higher order, economic impacts. We argue that managers should carry out econometric tests which are specialized to capturing primal, revenue-enhancing impacts, as opposed to dual, cost-reducing impacts. As an illustration, a sample BVL correlation test is constructed to quantify the impact of a "treasury workstation" system on a large commercial bank's ability to increase demand balances from corporate customers. We conclude with some thoughts about where BVL correlation will provide the bt results for managers.Information Systems Working Papers Serie

A Model for Determining Least-Cost Quail Stocking Programs

A model is presented to allow the calculation of the minimum cost of providing an acceptable level of quail hunter success expressed as kill per day. The model is based on a Poisson distribution for hunter kill per day, the number of hunters, their success rates, quail survival rates, various costs of quail production and release, stocking levels, and frequency of stocking. MODELING AND MEASURING THE BUSINESS VALUE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

Determining the 'business value' of information technology (IT) requires managers to choose performance measures which are well-suited to capturing the economic impacts of the application they are evaluating. In this paper, the authors discuss a promising approach for bridging the gap between a theory for rational decisions and management practice in evaluating investments in IT: Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). The referent discipline for the discussion is production economics, and the authors review basic concepts concerning performance measurement, efficiency, productivity and economic contribution or value-added from an economist's perspective. DEA's promise lies in its ability to handle multiple input and output production environments and its management action orientation. As an illustration of this potential, DEA is applied to assessing the performance of an automated teller machine (ATM) network, an IT which creates economic impacts at various organizational levels of a commercial bank.Information Systems Working Papers Serie
