Schools today, especially large comprehensive high schools, are besieged with studies, critiques, and proposals for reform. Many critics have exposed factors that contribute to putting our nation at risk because of its schools. Despite reports targeted on the weaknesses of high school education, constructive attempts are being made to study root causes and implement changes that work to improve and make lasting changes in the schools. As early as 1945, a body of research has focused on improving high schools by fully understanding student culture and promoting ideas and structures which facilitate improvements in student culture. It is believed that significant changes can be made by addressing factors that improve school culture, particularly student culture; The purpose of this study was to describe the student culture and the organizational factors or school-related factors that influence the student culture. Qualitative methodology was employed, and the study was conducted in two phases during 10 days at Crosstown High School;During phase 1, data were collected using individual and small group interviews, examining artifacts, and observing students in their daily activities. The interviews were used to gain an emic perspective of the shared beliefs, values, and basic assumptions held by students that reflect the students\u27 culture. Three hundred and twenty-one students in grades 9-12 participated in the research study. The observation of several events and the examination of artifacts supplied valuable information about the student culture of Crosstown High School;During phase II, data were collected using individual and small group interviews. Interview questions for all interviews were designed to glean information about each of the factors of this study from the experiences of those interviewed. Phase II was also designed to verify the accuracy of the data collected during phase I;The data were analyzed by the researcher to identify the commonly shared and unique beliefs held by the students. Interview data revealed eight common beliefs among students at Crosstown High School. The essence of the Crosstown High School student culture is stable, strong, and positive. Student engagement factors of school membership and authentic work are present in the students\u27 beliefs. Six organization systems factors were found to impact the students\u27 culture at Crosstown High School

A study of nonadditivity in factorial experiments with no replication

Suppose that d experimental treatments, each at a number of levels, are applied to a group of subjects in such a way that each treatment combination is assigned to one, and only one, subject. This is the makeup of a factorial experiment. If the assignment of treatment combinations to subjects is random, standard techniques have long been available for examining the effects of differing levels within a treatment. In this thesis we seek a technique for examining the effects of differing combinations of levels between treatments; For the simplest case, that of two treatments (or factors), we describe a number of techniques; some based on mathematical models, and some based on the rank of a matrix. We extend these techniques to the case where not all levels of one of the treatments are used, but only a random sample of levels. We also supply a procedure for choosing the appropriate technique; When more than one response variable is measured on each subject, the problem becomes a bit more complicated, since these variables may well be correlated. However, we are still able to provide a partial solution to the above problem; The case of three treatments, which, when solved, should suggest a general technique, is also examined here. Although by no means a complete solution, the techniques described present a solid basis for further study

Evaluations of systems for growing and finishing steers on pasture

The purpose of this experiment was to evaluate systems of growing and finishing steers on pasture. The systems included a winter grazing phase, next a spring-summer grazing phase with supplemental feeding and finally a finishing phase. During the winter, the steers grazed orchard grass or fescue pasture. As the pastures became short, a good quality mixed hay was Fed ad lib. The spring-summer grazing phase consisted of four treatments. Treatment number 1 was the control treatment and received no supplementation during the spring-summer grazing phase. Steers on treatment 2 were supplemented at the rate of 1.0 lb. of corn per animal CWT from May 14 to August 30. Treatments 3 and 4 began supplementation on July 1 and ended on August 30. These cattle were supplemented at the rate of 0.5 lb. and 1.0 lb. of corn per animal CWT, respectively. Summer grazing was followed by a finishing phase in which half the steers that were formerly on fescue were fed outside and half were fed inside. Steers formerly on orchard grass were fed in a similar manner; half were fed inside and half outside. Results of this study showed that gain, condition and fat thick ness were significantly affected by supplemental feeding of grain on pasture. The effect of former pasture type and inside or outside feeding did not significantly affect gain, ADC or final fat thickness
