Search for the exotic Resonance in 340GeV/c -Nucleus Interactions
We report on a high statistics search for the resonance in
-nucleus collisions at 340GeV/c. No evidence for this resonance is
found in our data sample which contains 676000 candidates above
background. For the decay channel and the
kinematic range 0.150.9 we find a 3 upper limit for the
production cross section of 3.1 and 3.5 b per nucleon for reactions with
carbon and copper, respectively.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, modification of ref. 43 and 4
Measurement of the Omega_c Lifetime
We present the measurement of the lifetime of the Omega_c we have performed
using three independent data samples from two different decay modes. Using a
Sigma- beam of 340 GeV/c we have obtained clean signals for the Omega_c
decaying into Xi- K- pi+ pi+ and Omega- pi+ pi- pi+, avoiding topological cuts
normally used in charm analysis. The short but measurable lifetime of the
Omega_c is demonstrated by a clear enhancement of the signals at short but
finite decay lengths. Using a continuous maximum likelihood method we
determined the lifetime to be tau(Omega_c) = 55 +13-11(stat) +18-23(syst) fs.
This makes the Omega_c the shortest living weakly decaying particle observed so
far. The short value of the lifetime confirms the predicted pattern of the
charmed baryon lifetimes and demonstrates that the strong interaction plays a
vital role in the lifetimes of charmed hadrons.Comment: 15 pages, including 7 figures; gzipped, uuencoded postscrip
Charge Asymmetries for D, D_s and Lambda_c Production in Sigma- - Nucleus Interactions at 340 GeV/c
CERN experiment WA89 has studied charmed particles produced by a Sigma^- beam
at 340 GeV/c on nuclear targets. Production of particles which have light
quarks in common with the beam is compared to production of those which do not.
Considerable production asymmetries between D^- and D^p, D_s^ and D_s^+ and
Lambda_c and Antilambda_c are observed. The results are compared with pion beam

Search for the pentaquark candidate (1540) in the hyperon beam experiment WA89
We report on a high-statistics search for the \t1540 resonance in
-nucleus collisions at 340 \gevc1 . No evidence for this resonance
was found in our data sample which contains 13 millions
decays above background. For the decay channel and the
kinematic range 0.05 we find the production cross section to be
1.8 b per nucleon at 99% CL.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
-Java: an
We present r-Java, an r-process code for open use that performs r-process nucleosynthesis calculations. Equipped with a simple graphical user interface, r-Java is capable of carrying out nuclear statistical equilibrium (NSE), as well as static and dynamic r-process calculations, for a wide range of input parameters. In this introductory paper, we present the motivation and details behind r-Java and results from our static and dynamic simulations. Static simulations are explored for a range of neutron irradiation and temperatures. Dynamic simulations are studied with a parameterized expansion formula. Our code generates the resulting abundance pattern based on a general entropy expression that can be applied to both degenerate and non-degenerate matter, allowing us to track the rapid density and temperature evolution of the ejecta during the initial stages of ejecta expansion. At present, our calculations are limited to the waiting-point approximation. We encourage the nuclear astrophysics community to provide feedback on the code and related documentation, which is available for download from the website of the Quark-Nova Project: http://quarknova.ucalgary.ca

Distinct Conditions Support a Novel Classification for Bradykinin-Mediated Angio-Oedema
BACKGROUND: Angio-oedema (AO) can be attributable to bradykinin (BK) accumulation, as is the case for prototypical hereditary AO (HAO) due to C1 inhibitor (C1-INH) deficiency. However, our clinical experience in a reference centre has shown that some patients display a clinical history suggestive of HAO, but exhibit normal C1-INH function, have no mutation in the causative genes associated with HAO (SERPING1, F12), and report no intake of drugs known to promote AO. OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine the frequency and distribution of different AO subtypes suspected to be BK-mediated AO (BK-AO) and defined by clinical, history and biological criteria (enzyme activities implicated in BK formation and catabolism). METHODS: The files of all patients referred to our centre for suspected BK-AO were retrospectively analysed. RESULTS: The distribution of patients (n = 162) was 16 and 4% with a hereditary deficiency of C1-INH or a gain of factor XII function, respectively, 29% with iatrogenic BK-AO, 21% with non-iatrogenic defective kininase activity and 30% with idiopathic increased kinin formation. CONCLUSION: BK-AO may be caused by multiple inherited or acquired factors triggering BK accumulation. Therefore, we propose a novel typology for BK-AO based on the imbalance of production/catabolism of BK
Boiling crisis dynamics: low gravity experiments at high pressure
To understand the boiling crisis mechanism, one can take advantage of the slowing down of boiling at high pressures, in the close vicinity of the liquid-vapor critical point of the given fluid. To preserve conventional bubble geometry, such experiments need to be carried out in low gravity. We report here two kinds of saturated boiling experiments. First we discuss the spatial experiments with SF 6 at 46 ∘C. Next we address two ground-based experiments under magnetic gravity compensation with H 2 at 33 K. We compare both kinds of experiments and show their complementarity. The dry spots under vapor bubbles are visualized by using transparent heaters made with metal oxide films. We evidence two regimes of the dry spots growth: the regime of circular dry spots and the regime of chain coalescence of dry spots that immediately precedes the heater dryout. A recent H 2 experiment is shown to bridge the gap between the near-critical and low pressure boiling experiments
