The effect of underwater sounds on shark behaviour
The effect of sound on the behaviour of sharks has not been investigated since the 1970s. Sound is, however, an important sensory stimulus underwater, as it can spread in all directions quickly and propagate further than any other sensory cue. We used a baited underwater camera rig to record the behavioural responses of eight species of sharks (seven reef and coastal shark species and the white shark, Carcharodon carcharias) to the playback of two distinct sound stimuli in the wild: an orca call sequence and an artificially generated sound. When sounds were playing, reef and coastal sharks were less numerous in the area, were responsible for fewer interactions with the baited test rigs, and displayed less âinquisitiveâ behaviour, compared to during silent control trials. White sharks spent less time around the baited camera rig when the artificial sound was presented, but showed no significant difference in behaviour in response to orca calls. The use of the presented acoustic stimuli alone is not an effective deterrent for C. carcharias. Quantifying soil carbon stocks and greenhouse gas fluxes in the sugarcane agrosystem: point of view
Strategies to mitigate climate change through the use of biofuels (such as ethanol) are associated not only to the increase in the amount of C stored in soils but also to the reduction of GHG emissions to the atmosphere.This report mainly aimed to propose appropriate methodologies for the determinations of soil organic carbon stocks and greenhouse gas fluxes in agricultural phase of the sugarcane production. Therefore, the text is a piece of contribution that may help to obtain data not only on soil carbon stocks but also on greenhouse gas emissions in order to provide an accurate life cycle assessment for the ethanol. Given that the greenhouse gas value is the primary measure of biofuel product quality, biorefiners that can show a higher offset of their product will have an advantage in the market place
New insights into the genetic etiology of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias
Characterization of the genetic landscape of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias (ADD) provides a unique opportunity for a better understanding of the associated pathophysiological processes. We performed a two-stage genome-wide association study totaling 111,326 clinically diagnosed/'proxy' AD cases and 677,663 controls. We found 75 risk loci, of which 42 were new at the time of analysis. Pathway enrichment analyses confirmed the involvement of amyloid/tau pathways and highlighted microglia implication. Gene prioritization in the new loci identified 31 genes that were suggestive of new genetically associated processes, including the tumor necrosis factor alpha pathway through the linear ubiquitin chain assembly complex. We also built a new genetic risk score associated with the risk of future AD/dementia or progression from mild cognitive impairment to AD/dementia. The improvement in prediction led to a 1.6- to 1.9-fold increase in AD risk from the lowest to the highest decile, in addition to effects of age and the APOE Δ4 allele
An Explicit Solution to Postâs Problem over the Reals
Abstract. In the BSS model of real number computations we prove a concrete and explicit semi-decidable language to be undecidable yet not reducible from (and thus strictly easier than) the real Halting Language. This solution to Postâs Problem over the reals significantly differs from its classical, discrete variant where advanced diagonalization techniques are only known to yield the existence of such intermediate Turing degrees. Then we strengthen the above result and show as well the existence of an uncountable number of incomparable semi-decidable Turing degrees below the real Halting problem in the BSS model. Again, our proof will give concrete such problems representing these different degrees.
Uncomputability Below the Real Halting Problem
Most of the existing work in real number computation theory concentrates on complexity issues rather than computability aspects. Though some natural problems like deciding membership in the Mandelbrot set or in the set of rational numbers are known to be undecidable in the Blum-Shub-Smale (BSS) model of computation over the reals, there has not been much work on different degrees of undecidability. A typical question into this direction is the real version of Postâs classical problem: Are there some explicit undecidable problems below the real Halting Problem? In this paper we study three different topics related to such questions: First an extension of a positive answer to Postâs problem to the linear setting. We then analyze how additional real constants increase the power of a BSS machine. And finally a real variant of the classical word problem for groups is presented which we establish reducible to and from (that is, complete for) the BSS Halting problem
