    Hemodynamics optimization during off-pump coronary artery bypass: the ‘no compression' technique

    Objective: Heart manipulation during OPCAB may cause hemodynamical instability in particular for access to the posterior and lateral walls. The ‘no compression' technique involves enucleation of the heart without any compression on the cavities, and stabilization of the target area with a suction device. The impact of this technique on hemodynamics is assessed. Methods: In order to analyze a homogeneous group, 26 consecutive patients with triple grafts, one to each side of the heart in the same sequential order (posterior, lateral and anterior wall successively) were selected. Heart rate (HR), mean pulmonary arterial pressure (PAP, mmHg), pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (PCWP, mmHg), mean arterial pressure (MAP, mmHg), cardiac output index (COI, l/min per m2), and central venous saturation (SvO2,%) were monitored. A coronary shunt was used for all the anastomoses. Results: HR was stable with baseline value of 60±10 and the highest value for the anterior wall, 63.6±8 (P=0.23). PAP and PCWP exhibited their highest increase, when compared with baseline, for the lateral wall, 23.9±4.7 vs. 20.7±6.2 (P=0.06), and 17.2±4.7 vs. 14.9±5.6 (P=0.16), respectively. MAP, COI and SvO2, exhibited their largest drop, when compared with baseline, for the lateral wall too, 73.1±9.1 vs. 77.1±7.5 (P=0.12), 1.99±0.47 vs. 2.26±0.55 (P=0.09), and 70.5±8.4 vs. 74.8±9.3 (P=0.12), respectively. Conclusions: None of the hemodynamical parameter differed significantly from baseline value for all three territories.     Epidemiology of pestivirus infection in wild ungulates of the French South Alps

    &lt;p&gt;Inter-species transmission is often incriminated in the epidemiology of Pestivirus diseases. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of Pestivirus in some mountain wild ungulates and to determine their role in Pestivirus transmission, as mountain pastures are a place where cohabitations between wild and domestic ungulates are particularly high. Between 2003 and 2007, a longitudinal epidemiological study was carried out on hunted ungulates in the French Hautes-Alpes department. Pestivirus-specific antibodies against p80 protein (also named NS3) common to all Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus (BVDV) and Border Disease Virus (BDV) were found in 45.9% (95% confidence interval [CI95%]: 40.5-51.3%) of the 343 tested chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra). In addition, mouflons (Ovis gmelinii musimon) were shown for the first time to be strongly infected (61.1%; CI95%: 38.6-83.6) by a Pestivirus. These serological ELISA results were confirmed by comparative virus neutralization tests, performed on seven Pestivirus strains by using 15 seropositive samples. The highest antibody titers were directed against 2 BDV strains (Av and 33s strains), rather than BDV-4, a strain responsible for Pyrenean-chamois epizooties. Virus neutralization tests confirm a BDV circulation in wild ungulates in the French South Alps. However, no Pestivirus RNA was detected by reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction in serum and spleen samples from seronegative animals and no virus was isolated from those samples either. Efforts should be made to improve the protocol in order to be able to isolate and characterize the local strain. Finally, the oldness (age) and femaleness (gender) increase the risk of seroconversion in chamois.&lt;/p&gt;</p

    Ecological Specialization of Two Photobiont- Specific Maritime Cyanolichen Species of the Genus Lichina

    22 páginas, 4 tablas, 4 figurasAll fungi in the class Lichinomycetes are lichen-forming and exclusively associate with cyanobacteria. Two closely related maritime species of the genus Lichina (L. confinis and L. pygmaea) show similar distribution ranges in the Northeast Atlantic, commonly co-occurring at the same rocky shores but occupying different littoral zones. By means of 16S rRNA and phycocyanin operon markers we studied a) the phylogenetic relationships of cyanobionts associated with these species, b) the match of divergence times between both symbionts, and c) whether Lichina species differ in photobiont association and in how geography and ecology affect selectivity. The cyanobionts studied are closely related to both marine and freshwater strains of the genus Rivularia.We found evidence of a high specificity to particular cyanobiont lineages in both species: Lichina pygmaea and L. confinis incorporate specific lineages of Rivularia that do not overlap at the haplotype nor the OTU levels. Dating divergences of the fungal and cyanobacterial partners revealed an asynchronous origin of both lineages. Within each fungal species, selectivity varied across the studied area, influenced by environmental conditions (both atmospheric and marine), although patterns were highly correlated between both lichen taxa.
