Efficient Remedies for Breach of Warranty
This article attempts to suggest valuable refinements and extensions of the economic theory of warranty by explicitly considering the choice of remedies for breach of warranty in conjunction with the choice of warranty protection itself. In particular, it offers explanations for the prevalence of replacement terms rather than refund terms in warranties. Economists studying the general issue of breach of contract have noted that the choice of remedy has important implications for risk sharing, renegotiation, transaction-specific investment, and the incentive to breach.5 This article derives much of its insight from the recognition that work on the economics of contract breach has much to say that is relevant to the economics of warranties
The use of a formal sensitivity analysis on epidemic models with immune protection from maternally acquired antibodies
This paper considers the outcome of a formal sensitivity analysis on a series of epidemic model structures developed to study the population level effects of maternal antibodies. The analysis is used to compare the potential influence of maternally acquired immunity on various age and time domain observations of infection and serology, with and without seasonality. The results of the analysis indicate that time series observations are largely insensitive to variations in the average duration of this protection, and that age related empirical data are likely to be most appropriate for estimating these characteristics
Assessing housing quality and its impact on health, safety and sustainability
Background The adverse health and environmental
effects of poor housing quality are well established. A
central requirement for evidence-based policies and
programmes to improve housing standards is a valid,
reliable and practical way of measuring housing quality
that is supported by policy agencies, the housing sector,
researchers and the public.
Methods This paper provides guidance on the
development of housing quality-assessment tools that
link practical measures of housing conditions to their
effects on health, safety and sustainability, with
particular reference to tools developed in New Zealand
and England.
Results The authors describe how information on
housing quality can support individuals, agencies and the
private sector to make worthwhile improvements to the
health, safety and sustainability of housing. The
information gathered and the resultant tools developed
should be guided by the multiple purposes and end users
of this information. Other important issues outlined
include deciding on the scope, detailed content, practical
administration issues and how the information will be
analysed and summarised for its intended end users.
There are likely to be considerable benefits from
increased international collaboration and standardisation
of approaches to measuring housing hazards. At the
same time, these assessment approaches need to
consider local factors such as climate, geography,
culture, predominating building practices, important
housing-related health issues and existing building
codes.
Conclusions An effective housing quality-assessment
tool has a central role in supporting improvements to
housing. The issues discussed in this paper are designed
to motivate and assist the development of such tools
(dis)Functions : Marxist theories of architecture and the avant-garde
This paper investigates the relationship between architecture and theories of the avant-garde in the critical projects of the 1970s, with a focus on the theories of Peter Bürger and Manfredo Tafuri. Both Tafuri and Bürger were writing from within the context of a radicalized Marxism and were fuelled by an intellectual pessimism towards the totalizing systems of cultural production that questioned the role of resistance in aesthetics and the inability of the historical avant-gardes to engage within the political and economic fields of contemporary society. While there is a common ancestry to these two approaches, and mutual acceptance of the failure of the avant-garde project, the work of Tafuri has had an enduring influence on architectural history and theory, while Bürger’s synchronous work has attracted only a modest amount of scholarly attention in architecture despite its ongoing legacy in art theory and, particularly, within an American context. This paper argues that Bürger’s dialectical approach has a significance for architectural theory and presents a discursive position through which Marxism and architecture can be advanced. Through a detailed reading of these two approaches, the paper attempts to position architecture as a particular strategy of the avant-garde that overshadowed all fields of aesthetic production in the period
CHARACTERISTICS OF MASTER'S PROGRAMS IN AGRIBUSINESS MANAGEMENT
This study describes and compares agribusiness master’s programs in North America. These programs include the master of business administration (MBA) and master in (or “of”) agribusiness (MAB) degrees. Accredited MBA programs with an agribusiness emphasis are required to have a clear required core of courses in finance, management, marketing management, and human behavior. Additional required courses in policy, agricultural marketing, production or managerial economics, and quantitative methods are also frequently required. MAB programs have more diversity regarding the four core subjects with a greater percentage of the courses taught within departments of agricultural economics. Evaluation of agribusiness master’s programs in agricultural economics departments is difficult without any formal evaluation criteria.Agribusiness, Teaching/Communication/Extension/Profession,
Morphogenesis by symbiogenesis
Here we review cases where initiation of morphogenesis, including the differentiation of specialized cells and tissues, has clearly evolved due to cyclical symbiont integration. For reasons of space, our examples are drawn chiefly from the plant, fungal and bacterial kingdoms. Partners live in symbioses and show unique morphological specializations that result when they directly and cyclically interact. We include here brief citations to relevant literature where plant, bacterial or fungal partners alternate independent with entirely integrated living. The independent, or at least physically unassociated stages, are correlated with the appearance of distinctive morphologies that can be traced to the simultaneous presence and strong interaction of the plant with individuals that represent different taxa
Parks, people and pixels: evaluating landscape effects of an East African national park on its surroundings
Landscapes surrounding protected areas, while still containing considerable biodiversity, have rapidly growing human populations and associated agricultural development in most of the developing world that tend to isolate them, potentially reducing their conservation value. Using field studies and multi-temporal Landsat imagery, we examine a forest park, Kibale National Park in western Uganda, its changes over time, and related land cover change in the surrounding landscape. We find Kibale has successfully defended its borders and prevents within-park deforestation and other land incursions, and has maintained tree cover throughout the time period of the study. Outside the park there was a significant increase in tea plantations and continued forest fragmentation and wetland loss. The question of whether the park is a conservation success because of the network of forest fragments and wetlands or in spite of them remains unanswered
Parallax projections : decay, entropy and obsolescence at Wangi Power Station
This paper discusses recent drawing projects of Wangi Power Station exhibit ed as part of Counternarratives (Watt Space Gallery, January 5–28, 2021) that supplement the existing archive of drawn and photographic material from the period. These creative works explore hybridised digital and analogue technology and document the dereliction and decay of this highly complex and threatened building that sits at a critical junction in the history of the twentieth century. The authors of this work develop different but related methods to represent Wangi in its current state of abandonment, with each author bringing their own toolkits and modes of representation to develop a more complete and nuanced picture of industrial ruination
